GeoStereo: A Unified Stereo Geometry Estimation Framework for Disparity and Surface Normal

Authors: Qizhe WeiXianda GuoShaocong XuHong LiRunyi YangHao Zhao

Abstract

Stereo matching and surface normal estimation are fundamental tasks in 3D vision. However, existing feed-forward stereo methods still struggle to produce reliable predictions in challenging regions, mainly due to the lack of strong geometric priors. In this paper, we propose GeoStereo\textbf{GeoStereo}, a unified stereo geometry estimation framework that leverages powerful diffusion priors to jointly predict disparity and surface normals. Specifically, GeoStereo couples a feed-forward stereo matching pipeline with a diffusion-based normal estimation branch. To enable effective interaction between the two tasks, we introduce a disparity to normal initialization strategy and construct a warp to left-view condition for the diffusion process. This coupled design allows the diffusion branch to provide strong structural priors that enhance disparity estimation in ill-posed regions, while the feed-forward branch offers reliable geometric guidance for accurate normal prediction. Extensive experiments show that GeoStereo performs reliably in challenging scenarios, including low-light environments, highly reflective surfaces, and transparent objects. Under zero-shot settings, it achieves Rank-1 disparity estimation on multiple benchmarks, including KITTI and NYUv2, and delivers the best normal estimation accuracy on many real indoor benchmarks, such as iBims-1 and ScanNet. Geometry Reinforced Efficient Attention Tuning Equipped with Normals for Robust Stereo Matching

Despite remarkable advances in image-driven stereo matching over the past decade, Synthetic-to-Realistic ZeroShot (Syn-to-Real) generalization remains an open challenge. This suboptimal generalization performance mainly stems from cross-domain shifts and ill-posed ambiguities inherent in image textures, particularly in occluded, textureless, repetitive, and non-Lambertian (specular/transparent) regions. To improve Synto-Real generalization, we propose GREATEN, a framework that incorporates surface normals as domain-invariant, object-intrinsic, and discriminative geometric cues to compensate for the limitations of image textures. The proposed framework consists of three key components. First, a Gated Contextual-Geometric Fusion (GCGF) module adaptively suppresses unreliable contextual cues in image features and fuses the filtered image features with normal-driven geometric features to construct domain-invariant and discriminative contextual-geometric representations. Second, a Specular-Transparent Augmentation (STA) strategy improves the robustness of GCGF against misleading visual cues in non-Lambertian regions. Third, sparse attention designs preserve the fine-grained global feature extraction capability of GREATStereo for handling occlusion and texture-related ambiguities while substantially reducing computational overhead, including Sparse Spatial (SSA), Sparse Dual-Matching (SDMA), and Simple Volume (SVA) attentions. Trained exclusively on synthetic data such as SceneFlow, GREATEN-IGEV achieves outstanding Syn-to-Real performance. Specifically, it reduces errors by 30% on ETH3D, 8.5% on the non-Lambertian Booster, and 14.1% on KITTI-2015, compared to FoundationStereo, Monster-Stereo, and DEFOM-Stereo, respectively. In addition, GREATEN-IGEV runs 19.2% faster than GREAT-IGEV and supports high-resolution (3K) inference on Middlebury with disparity ranges up to 768.

STEREOFLOW: Progressive Stereo Matching with StereoDiT and Transition Flow Matching

Stereo matching is a fundamental task in 3D reconstruction. Despite remarkable advances, the prevailing paradigms formulate stereo matching as a deterministic regression problem, collapsing the multimodal distribution modeling into a single-point estimation. This formulation suffers from a regression-to-mean bias, frequently struggling with ambiguous regions. In contrast, we introduce a prior-guided generative framework that integrates deterministic matching regression and generative distribution modeling within a complementary formulation. Built upon this formulation, we introduce StereoFlow through three key components: (i) a two-stage progressive cascade matching network that progressively produces multi-resolution stereo conditions with complementary matching cues; (ii) a pixel diffusion transformer (termed StereoDiT) with a frequency-decoupled architecture for modeling correspondence ambiguity; (iii) a few-step flow matching objective (termed Transition Flow Matching) for efficient optimization. In summary, \textsc{\textbf{StereoFlow}} achieves strong geometric consistency and rich fine-grained details in ill-posed, discontinuous regions and under zero-shot generalization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed StereoFlow establishes multiple state-of-the-art results across benchmarks, including Scene Flow, KITTI, ETH3D, and Middlebury.

Towards Consistent Video Geometry Estimation

This work presents ViGeo, a feed-forward foundation model for recovering spatially dense and temporally consistent geometry from video sequences. Built upon a plain transformer architecture without task-specific architectural modifications, ViGeo supports streaming, full-sequence, and long-video inference within a unified model. The key design is dynamic chunking attention, which exposes the model to both bidirectional and causal temporal contexts during training and allows it to adapt its attention pattern at test time without retraining. To improve supervision quality, we further introduce a completion-based data refinement framework. This framework trains a video depth completion teacher that conditions on sparse and noisy annotations and exploits video/multi-view context to produce dense, temporally coherent, and geometrically reliable training targets. Beyond depth and point maps, ViGeo also predicts surface normals within the same framework. Trained solely on public datasets, ViGeo achieves state-of-the-art performance across online, offline, and long-video depth estimation, surface normal estimation, and video point map estimation.
