Compositional Image Generation

Overview

The field aims to make image generators reliably follow instructions about what belongs in a scene, where it goes, how objects relate, and which details come from reference images. Approaches include layout- and graph-conditioned diffusion, spatial and occlusion controls, modular adapters and layered synthesis, and agentic planning with iterative generation and editing. Evaluation spans layout-to-image, multi-subject and multi-reference tasks, with benchmarks such as CogCanvas and TRACE-Bench probing identity, attribute binding, relations, and spatial accuracy. A central challenge is generalizing to unfamiliar combinations and crowded scenes: binding and identity errors grow with complexity, while stronger control must preserve image quality and remain efficient.

Multimodal Large Language Models for Multi-Subject In-Context Image Generation

Recent advances in text-to-image (T2I) generation have enabled visually coherent image synthesis from descriptions, but generating images containing multiple given subjects remains challenging. As the number of reference identities increases, existing methods often suffer from subject missing and semantic drift. To address this problem, we propose MUSIC, the first MLLM specifically designed for MUlti-Subject In-Context image generation. To overcome the data scarcity, we introduce an automatic and scalable data generation pipeline that eliminates the need for manual annotation. Furthermore, we enhance the model's understanding of multi-subject semantic relationships through a vision chain-of-thought (CoT) mechanism, guiding step-by-step reasoning from subject images to semantics and generation. To mitigate identity entanglement and manage visual complexity, we develop a novel semantics-driven spatial layout planning method and demonstrate its test-time scalability. By incorporating complex subject images during training, we improve the model's capacity for chained reasoning. In addition, we curate MSIC, a new benchmark tailored for multi-subject in-context generation. Experimental results demonstrate that MUSIC significantly surpasses other methods in both multi- and single-subject scenarios.

Graph-PiT: Enhancing Structural Coherence in Part-Based Image Synthesis via Graph Priors

Achieving fine-grained and structurally sound controllability is a cornerstone of advanced visual generation. Existing part-based frameworks treat user-provided parts as an unordered set and therefore ignore their intrinsic spatial and semantic relationships, which often results in compositions that lack structural integrity. To bridge this gap, we propose Graph-PiT, a framework that explicitly models the structural dependencies of visual components using a graph prior. Specifically, we represent visual parts as nodes and their spatial-semantic relationships as edges. At the heart of our method is a Hierarchical Graph Neural Network (HGNN) module that performs bidirectional message passing between coarse-grained part-level super-nodes and fine-grained IP+ token sub-nodes, refining part embeddings before they enter the generative pipeline. We also introduce a graph Laplacian smoothness loss and an edge-reconstruction loss so that adjacent parts acquire compatible, relation-aware embeddings. Quantitative experiments on controlled synthetic domains (character, product, indoor layout, and jigsaw), together with qualitative transfer to real web images, show that Graph-PiT improves structural coherence over vanilla PiT while remaining compatible with the original IP-Prior pipeline. Ablation experiments confirm that explicit relational reasoning is crucial for enforcing user-specified adjacency constraints. Our approach not only enhances the plausibility of generated concepts but also offers a scalable and interpretable mechanism for complex, multi-part image synthesis. The code is available at https://github.com/wolf-bailang/Graph-PiT.

Controllable Image Generation with Composed Parallel Token Prediction

Conditional discrete generative models struggle to faithfully compose multiple input conditions. To address this, we derive a theoretically-grounded formulation for composing discrete probabilistic generative processes, with masked generation (absorbing diffusion) as a special case. Our formulation enables precise specification of novel combinations and numbers of input conditions that lie outside the training data, with concept weighting enabling emphasis or negation of individual conditions. In synergy with the richly compositional learned vocabulary of VQ-VAE and VQ-GAN, our method attains a 63.4%63.4\% relative reduction in error rate compared to the previous state-of-the-art, averaged across 3 datasets (positional CLEVR, relational CLEVR and FFHQ), simultaneously obtaining an average absolute FID improvement of −9.58-9.58. Meanwhile, our method offers a 2.3×2.3\times to 12×12\times real-time speed-up over comparable methods, and is readily applied to an open pre-trained discrete text-to-image model for fine-grained control of text-to-image generation.

PortraitCraft: A Benchmark for Portrait Composition Understanding and Generation

Portrait composition plays a central role in portrait aesthetics and visual communication, yet existing datasets and benchmarks mainly focus on coarse aesthetic scoring, generic image aesthetics, or unconstrained portrait generation. This limits systematic research on structured portrait composition analysis and controllable portrait generation under explicit composition requirements. In this paper, we introduce PortraitCraft, a unified benchmark for portrait composition understanding and generation. PortraitCraft is built on a dataset of approximately 50,000 curated real portrait images with structured multi-level supervision, including global composition scores, annotations over 13 composition attributes, attribute-level explanation texts, visual question answering pairs, and composition-oriented textual descriptions for generation. Based on this dataset, we establish two complementary benchmark tasks for composition understanding and composition-aware generation within a unified framework. The first evaluates portrait composition understanding through score prediction, fine-grained attribute reasoning, and image-grounded visual question answering, while the second evaluates portrait generation from structured composition descriptions under explicit composition constraints. We further define standardized evaluation protocols and provide reference baseline results with representative multimodal models. PortraitCraft provides a comprehensive benchmark for future research on fine-grained portrait understanding, interpretable aesthetic assessment, and controllable portrait generation.

Reflection Generation for Composite Image Using Diffusion Model

Image composition involves inserting a foreground object into the background while synthesizing environment-consistent effects such as shadows and reflections. Although shadow generation has been extensively studied, reflection generation remains largely underexplored. In this work, we focus on reflection generation. We inject the prior information of reflection placement and reflection appearance into foundation diffusion model. We also divide reflections into two types and adopt type-aware model design. To support training, we construct the first large-scale object reflection dataset DEROBA. Experiments demonstrate that our method generates reflections that are physically coherent and visually realistic, establishing a new benchmark for reflection generation.

ConceptWeaver: Weaving Disentangled Concepts with Flow

Pre-trained flow-based models excel at synthesizing complex scenes yet lack a direct mechanism for disentangling and customizing their underlying concepts from one-shot real-world sources. To demystify this process, we first introduce a novel differential probing technique to isolate and analyze the influence of individual concept tokens on the velocity field over time. This investigation yields a critical insight: the generative process is not monolithic but unfolds in three distinct stages. An initial Blueprint Stage establishes low-frequency structure, followed by a pivotal Instantiation Stage where content concepts emerge with peak intensity and become naturally disentangled, creating an optimal window for manipulation. A final concept-insensitive refinement stage then synthesizes fine-grained details. Guided by this discovery, we propose ConceptWeaver, a framework for one-shot concept disentanglement. ConceptWeaver learns concept-specific semantic offsets from a single reference image using a stage-aware optimization strategy that aligns with the three-stage framework. These learned offsets are then deployed during inference via our novel ConceptWeaver Guidance (CWG) mechanism, which strategically injects them at the appropriate generative stage. Extensive experiments validate that ConceptWeaver enables high-fidelity, compositional synthesis and editing, demonstrating that understanding and leveraging the intrinsic, staged nature of flow models is key to unlocking precise, multi-granularity content manipulation.

MACRO: Advancing Multi-Reference Image Generation with Structured Long-Context Data

Generating images conditioned on multiple visual references is critical for real-world applications such as multi-subject composition, narrative illustration, and novel view synthesis, yet current models suffer from severe performance degradation as the number of input references grows. We identify the root cause as a fundamental data bottleneck: existing datasets are dominated by single- or few-reference pairs and lack the structured, long-context supervision needed to learn dense inter-reference dependencies. To address this, we introduce MacroData, a large-scale dataset of 400K samples, each containing up to 10 reference images, systematically organized across four complementary dimensions -- Customization, Illustration, Spatial reasoning, and Temporal dynamics -- to provide comprehensive coverage of the multi-reference generation space. Recognizing the concurrent absence of standardized evaluation protocols, we further propose MacroBench, a benchmark of 4,000 samples that assesses generative coherence across graded task dimensions and input scales. Extensive experiments show that fine-tuning on MacroData yields substantial improvements in multi-reference generation, and ablation studies further reveal synergistic benefits of cross-task co-training and effective strategies for handling long-context complexity. The dataset and benchmark will be publicly released.

EchoGen: Cycle-Consistent Learning for Unified Layout-Image Generation and Understanding

In this work, we present EchoGen, a unified framework for layout-to-image generation and image grounding, capable of generating images with accurate layouts and high fidelity to text descriptions (e.g., spatial relationships), while grounding the image robustly at the same time. We believe that image grounding possesses strong text and layout understanding abilities, which can compensate for the corresponding limitations in layout-to-image generation. At the same time, images generated from layouts exhibit high diversity in content, thereby enhancing the robustness of image grounding. Jointly training both tasks within a unified model can promote performance improvements for each. However, we identify that this joint training paradigm encounters several optimization challenges and results in restricted performance. To address these issues, we propose progressive training strategies. First, the Parallel Multi-Task Pre-training (PMTP) stage equips the model with basic abilities for both tasks, leveraging shared tokens to accelerate training. Next, the Dual Joint Optimization (DJO) stage exploits task duality to sequentially integrate the two tasks, enabling unified optimization. Finally, the Cycle RL stage eliminates reliance on visual supervision by using consistency constraints as rewards, significantly enhancing the model's unified capabilities via the GRPO strategy. Extensive experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art results on both layout-to-image generation and image grounding benchmarks, and reveal clear synergistic gains from optimizing the two tasks together.

LaDe: Unified Multi-Layered Graphic Media Generation and Decomposition

Media design layer generation enables the creation of fully editable, layered design documents such as posters, flyers, and logos using only natural language prompts. Existing methods either restrict outputs to a fixed number of layers or require each layer to contain only spatially continuous regions, causing the layer count to scale linearly with design complexity. We propose LaDe (Layered Media Design), a latent diffusion framework that generates a flexible number of semantically meaningful layers. LaDe combines three components: an LLM-based prompt expander that transforms a short user intent into structured per-layer descriptions that guide the generation, a Latent Diffusion Transformer with a 4D RoPE positional encoding mechanism that jointly generates the full media design and its constituent RGBA layers, and an RGBA VAE that decodes each layer with full alpha-channel support. By conditioning on layer samples during training, our unified framework supports three tasks: text-to-image generation, text-to-layers media design generation, and media design decomposition. We compare LaDe to Qwen-Image-Layered on text-to-layers and image-to-layers tasks on the Crello test set. LaDe outperforms Qwen-Image-Layered in text-to-layers generation by improving text-to-layer alignment, as validated by two VLM-as-a-judge evaluators (GPT-4o mini and Qwen3-VL).

CompDiff enables fair and zero shot medical image generation across demographic intersections through compositional diffusion

Medical image generators trained on imbalanced data can fail at demographic intersections absent from training. We introduce CompDiff, which encodes age, sex and race separately and composes supervised demographic tokens alongside clinical text. Across chest radiographs and fundus images, CompDiff improves overall and subgroup fidelity relative to prompt conditioning (RoentGen-v2) and loss reweighting (FairDiffusion). It generalises in zero-shot generation to 16 chest X-ray intersections excluded from training, achieving the lowest mean FID-RadImageNet in every intersection. In a blinded reader study of these unseen intersections, two radiologists gave CompDiff the highest mean scores among generators for anatomical realism and agreement with the clinical impression, and selected its images most often as the most realistic. Pretraining with CompDiff images improved downstream classification, while CompDiff audit cohorts reduced estimation error on rare intersections. These findings support compositional demographic conditioning for extending medical image synthesis to underserved populations. Code: https://github.com/mahmoudibrahim98/CompDiff

LICA: Layered Image Composition Annotations for Graphic Design Research

We introduce LICA (Layered Image Composition Annotations), a large scale dataset of 1,550,244 multi-layer graphic design compositions designed to advance structured understanding and generation of graphic layouts. In addition to rendered PNG images, LICA represents each design as a hierarchical composition of typed components including text, image, vector, and group elements, each paired with rich per-element metadata such as spatial geometry, typographic attributes, opacity, and visibility. The dataset spans 20 design categories and 971,850 unique templates, providing broad coverage of real-world design structures. We further introduce graphic design video as a new and largely unexplored challenge for current vision-language models through 27,261 animated layouts annotated with per-component keyframes and motion parameters. Beyond scale, LICA establishes a new paradigm of research tasks for graphic design, enabling structured investigations into problems such as layer-aware inpainting, structured layout generation, controlled design editing, and temporally-aware generative modeling. By representing design as a system of compositional layers and relationships, the dataset supports research on models that operate directly on design structure rather than pixels alone.

Multi-Object Advertisement Creative Generation

Lifestyle images are photographs that capture environments and objects in everyday settings. In furniture product marketing, advertisers often create lifestyle images containing products to resonate with potential buyers, allowing buyers to visualize how the products fit into their daily lives. While recent advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) have given rise to realistic image content creation, their application in e-commerce advertising is challenging because high-quality ads must authentically representing the products in realistic scearios. Therefore, manual intervention is usually required for individual generations, making it difficult to scale to larger product catalogs. To understand the challenges faced by advertisers using GenAI to create lifestyle images at scale, we conducted evaluations on ad images generated using state-of-the-art image generation models and identified the major challenges. Based on our findings, we present CreativeAds, a multi-product ad creation system that supports scalable automated generation with customized parameter adjustment for individual generation. To ensure automated high-quality ad generation, CreativeAds innovates a pipeline that consists of three modules to address challenges in product pairing, layout generation, and background generation separately. Furthermore, CreativeAds contains an intuitive user interface to allow users to oversee generation at scale, and it also supports detailed controls on individual generation for user customized adjustments. We performed a user study on CreativeAds and extensive evaluations of the generated images, demonstrating CreativeAds's ability to create large number of high-quality images at scale for advertisers without requiring expertise in GenAI tools.

EmoStory: Emotion-Aware Story Generation

Story generation aims to produce image sequences that depict coherent narratives while maintaining subject consistency across frames. Although existing methods have excelled in producing coherent and expressive stories, they remain largely emotion-neutral, focusing on what subject appears in a story while overlooking how emotions shape narrative interpretation and visual presentation. As stories are intended to engage audiences emotionally, we introduce emotion-aware story generation, a new task that aims to generate subject-consistent visual stories with explicit emotional directions. This task is challenging due to the abstract nature of emotions, which must be grounded in concrete visual elements and consistently expressed across a narrative through visual composition. To address these challenges, we propose EmoStory, a two-stage framework that integrates agent-based story planning and region-aware story generation. The planning stage transforms target emotions into coherent story prompts with emotion agent and writer agent, while the generation stage preserves subject consistency and injects emotion-related elements through region-aware composition. We evaluate EmoStory on a newly constructed dataset covering 25 subjects and 600 emotional stories. Extensive quantitative and qualitative results, along with user studies, show that EmoStory outperforms state-of-the-art story generation methods in emotion accuracy, prompt alignment, and subject consistency.

VSDiffusion: Taming Ill-Posed Shadow Generation via Visibility-Constrained Diffusion

Generating realistic cast shadows for inserted foreground objects is a crucial yet challenging problem in image composition, where maintaining geometric consistency of shadow and object in complex scenes remains difficult due to the ill-posed nature of shadow formation. To address this issue, we propose VSDiffusion, a visibility-constrained two-stage framework designed to narrow the solution space by incorporating visibility priors. In Stage I, we predict a coarse shadow mask to localize plausible shadow generated regions. And in Stage II, conditional diffusion is performed guided by lighting and depth cues estimated from the composite to generate accurate shadows. In VSDiffusion, we inject visibility priors through two complementary pathways. First, a visibility control branch with shadow-gated cross attention that provides multi-scale structural guidance. Then, a learned soft prior map that reweights training loss in error-prone regions to enhance geometric correction. Additionally, we also introduce high-frequency guided enhancement module to sharpen boundaries and improve texture interaction with the background. Experiments on widely used public DESOBAv2 dataset demonstrated that our proposed VSDiffusion can generate accurate shadow, and establishes new SOTA results across most evaluation metrics.

PICS: Pairwise Image Compositing with Spatial Interactions

Despite strong single-turn performance, diffusion-based image compositing often struggles to preserve coherent spatial relations in pairwise or sequential edits, where subsequent insertions may overwrite previously generated content and disrupt physical consistency. We introduce PICS, a self-supervised composition-by-decomposition paradigm that composes objects in parallel while explicitly modeling the compositional interactions among (fully-/partially-)visible objects and background. At its core, an Interaction Transformer employs mask-guided Mixture-of-Experts to route background, exclusive, and overlap regions to dedicated experts, with an adaptive α-blending strategy that infers a compatibility-aware fusion of overlapping objects while preserving boundary fidelity. To further enhance robustness to geometric variations, we incorporate geometry-aware augmentations covering both out-of-plane and in-plane pose changes of objects. Our method delivers superior pairwise compositing quality and substantially improved stability, with extensive evaluations across virtual try-on, indoor, and street scene settings showing consistent gains over state-of-the-art baselines. InnoAds-Composer: Efficient Condition Composition for E-Commerce Poster Generation

E-commerce product poster generation aims to automatically synthesize a single image that effectively conveys product information by presenting a subject, text, and a designed style. Recent diffusion models with fine-grained and efficient controllability have advanced product poster synthesis, yet they typically rely on multi-stage pipelines, and simultaneous control over subject, text, and style remains underexplored. Such naive multi-stage pipelines also show three issues: poor subject fidelity, inaccurate text, and inconsistent style. To address these issues, we propose InnoAds-Composer, a single-stage framework that enables efficient tri-conditional control tokens over subject, glyph, and style. To alleviate the quadratic overhead introduced by naive tri-conditional token concatenation, we perform importance analysis over layers and timesteps and route each condition only to the most responsive positions, thereby shortening the active token sequence. Besides, to improve the accuracy of Chinese text rendering, we design a Text Feature Enhancement Module (TFEM) that integrates features from both glyph images and glyph crops. To support training and evaluation, we also construct a high-quality e-commerce product poster dataset and benchmark, which is the first dataset that jointly contains subject, text, and style conditions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that InnoAds-Composer significantly outperforms existing product poster methods without obviously increasing inference latency.

Order Is Not Layout: Order-to-Space Bias in Image Generation

We study a systematic bias in modern image generation models: the mention order of entities in text spuriously determines spatial layout and entity--role binding. We term this phenomenon Order-to-Space Bias (OTS) and show that it arises in both text-to-image and image-to-image generation, often overriding grounded cues and causing incorrect layouts or swapped assignments. To quantify OTS, we introduce OTS-Bench, which isolates order effects with paired prompts differing only in entity order and evaluates models along two dimensions: homogenization and correctness. Experiments show that Order-to-Space Bias (OTS) is widespread in modern image generation models, and provide evidence that it is primarily data-driven and manifests during the early stages of layout formation. Motivated by this insight, we show that both targeted fine-tuning and early-stage intervention strategies can substantially reduce OTS, while preserving generation quality.

Training-Free Multi-Concept Image Editing

Training-free image editing with diffusion models is highly desirable yet is complex and remains a significant challenge. While recent optimisation-based methods achieve strong zero-shot edits from text, they still struggle to preserve identity and capture intricate details, such as facial structure, surface texture, or object-specific geometry, that exist below the level of linguistic abstraction. To address this fundamental gap, we propose Concept Distillation Sampling (CDS). To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to introduce a unified, training-free framework for target-less, multi-concept image editing. CDS overcomes this linguistic bottleneck of previous methods by anchoring the editing process in the certainty of pretrained LoRA adapters. We integrate a highly stable distillation backbone (featuring ordered timesteps, regularisation, and negative-prompt guidance) with a novel dynamic weighting mechanism. This approach enables the composition and control of multiple visual concepts directly within the diffusion process, utilising spatially-aware priors from pretrained LoRA adapters without causing concept clashing. Our method preserves instance concept identity without requiring reference samples of the desired edit. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that CDS establishes a new state-of-the-art over existing training-free editing and multi-LoRA composition methods on the InstructPix2Pix and ComposLoRA benchmarks. RL-RIG: A Generative Spatial Reasoner via Intrinsic Reflection

Recent advancements in image generation have achieved impressive results in producing high-quality images. However, existing image generation models still generally struggle with a spatial reasoning dilemma, lacking the ability to accurately capture fine-grained spatial relationships from the prompt and correctly generate scenes with structural integrity. To mitigate this dilemma, we propose RL-RIG, a Reinforcement Learning framework for Reflection-based Image Generation. Our architecture comprises four primary components: Diffuser, Checker, Actor, and Inverse Diffuser, following a Generate-Reflect-Edit paradigm to spark the Chain of Thought reasoning ability in image generation for addressing the dilemma. To equip the model with better intuition over generation trajectories, we further develop Reflection-GRPO to train the VLM Actor for edit prompts and the Image Editor for better image quality under a given prompt, respectively. Unlike traditional approaches that solely produce visually stunning yet structurally unreasonable content, our evaluation metrics prioritize spatial accuracy, utilizing Scene Graph IoU and employing a VLM-as-a-Judge strategy to assess the spatial consistency of generated images on LAION-SG dataset. Experimental results show that RL-RIG outperforms existing state-of-the-art open-source models by up to 11% in terms of controllable and precise spatial reasoning in image generation.

OSInsert: Towards High-authenticity and High-fidelity Image Composition

Generative image composition aims to regenerate the given foreground object in the background image to produce a realistic composite image. Some high-authenticity methods can adjust foreground pose/view to be compatible with background, while some high-fidelity methods can preserve the foreground details accurately. However, existing methods can hardly achieve both goals at the same time. In this work, we propose a two-stage strategy to achieve both goals. In the first stage, we use high-authenticity method to generate reasonable foreground shape, serving as the condition of high-fidelity method in the second stage. The experiments on MureCOM dataset verify the effectiveness of our two-stage strategy. The code and model have been released at https://github.com/bcmi/OSInsert-Image-Composition.

DEIG: Detail-Enhanced Instance Generation with Fine-Grained Semantic Control

Multi-Instance Generation has advanced significantly in spatial placement and attribute binding. However, existing approaches still face challenges in fine-grained semantic understanding, particularly when dealing with complex textual descriptions. To overcome these limitations, we propose DEIG, a novel framework for fine-grained and controllable multi-instance generation. DEIG integrates an Instance Detail Extractor (IDE) that transforms text encoder embeddings into compact, instance-aware representations, and a Detail Fusion Module (DFM) that applies instance-based masked attention to prevent attribute leakage across instances. These components enable DEIG to generate visually coherent multi-instance scenes that precisely match rich, localized textual descriptions. To support fine-grained supervision, we construct a high-quality dataset with detailed, compositional instance captions generated by VLMs. We also introduce DEIG-Bench, a new benchmark with region-level annotations and multi-attribute prompts for both humans and objects. Experiments demonstrate that DEIG consistently outperforms existing approaches across multiple benchmarks in spatial consistency, semantic accuracy, and compositional generalization. Moreover, DEIG functions as a plug-and-play module, making it easily integrable into standard diffusion-based pipelines.

REPA-G: Test-Time Conditioning with Representation-Aligned Visual Features

While representation alignment with self-supervised models has been shown to improve diffusion model training, its potential for enhancing inference-time conditioning remains largely unexplored. We introduce Representation-Aligned Guidance (REPA-G), a framework that leverages these aligned representations, with rich semantic properties, to enable test-time conditioning from features, in generation. By optimizing a similarity objective (the potential) at inference, we steer the denoising process toward a conditioned representation extracted from a pre-trained feature extractor. Our method provides versatile control at multiple levels of granularity, ranging from patch level matching via single patches to broad semantic guidance using global image feature tokens. We further extend this to multi-concept composition, allowing for the faithful combination of distinct concepts. REPA-G operates entirely at inference time with no additional training required, offering a flexible and precise alternative to often ambiguous text prompts or coarse class labels. Our approach achieves high-quality, diverse generations on ImageNet and COCO. Code is available at https://github.com/valeoai/REPA-G

CanvasComposer: Personalized Group Photo Generation via a Multi-Reference Canvas

Existing personalized image generators still struggle to preserve multiple reference identities in natural and coherent multi-human generations. To address these limitations, we present CanvasComposer, an interactive framework for personalized group photo generation. Inspired by professional image-editing software, CanvasComposer allows users to place reference subjects on a shared canvas, where each subject keeps its own RGBA cutout of the input. This multi-reference canvas preserves reference content under overlap while providing an intuitive interface for organizing multiple identities; the subjects remain separate elements on the input canvas, and the model outputs a single personalized and harmonized image. To keep this representation efficient, transparent latent pruning retains only tokens from each subject's non-transparent region, and cross-reference training mitigates copy-paste artifacts by learning to harmonize references sampled from different images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CanvasComposer achieves coherent generation and strong identity preservation compared to state-of-the-art methods in multi-human personalized image generation. What Drives Compositional Generalization in Visual Generative Models? The Importance of Continuous Training Objectives

Compositional generalization, the ability to generate novel combinations of known concepts, is a key ingredient for visual generative models. Yet, not all mechanisms that enable or inhibit it are fully understood. In this work, we conduct a systematic study of which design choices critically determine compositional generalization in image and video generation. By isolating independent design axes, we identify two key factors strongly associated with compositional success: (i) whether the training objective operates on a discrete or continuous distribution, and (ii) the completeness of conditioning information about constituent factors during training. We also show that relaxing the discrete loss with an auxiliary continuous latent objective can partially recover compositional performance in discrete models like MaskGIT. Our findings, corroborated by diverse compositional tasks and preliminary evidence in world models and LLMs, motivate a shift toward continuous objectives for compositional generalization.

CompArt: Operationalizing Aesthetic Alignment in Text-to-Image Generation via Principles of Art

Text-to-Image (T2I) diffusion models have made rapid progress on semantic alignment (generating what is described in the prompt), yet users still lack reliable control over aesthetic composition (how visual elements are put together). Prior work often treats aesthetics as a single, preference-driven notion (e.g., "high quality", "detailed", "breathtaking"), which does not map cleanly to compositional intent. We propose Aesthetic Alignment: aligning generated images to explicit, user-specified compositional constraints. We operationalize these constraints using the Principles of Art (PoA)-e.g., Balance, Rhythm, and Emphasis-commonly used in art education to describe composition. To support this task, we introduce CompArt, a dataset of 80,032 WikiArt images augmented with captions and PoA analyses produced by a multimodal LLM under structured prompting. We further propose ArtDapter, a lightweight and disentangled adapter that enables steering a pretrained T2I model along 10 PoA dimensions while retaining the base model's semantic capability. Experiments on CompArt show improved adherence to PoA controls over strong baselines under a dual evaluation protocol.
