Convolutional RNNs
RNN: Recurrent Neural Network
Overview
Convolutional recurrent networks study how to model sequences whose inputs have spatial structure, such as video frames, weather maps, audio spectrograms, and sensor arrays. Common approaches include ConvLSTM and ConvGRU cells, which use convolutions inside recurrent updates, and CRNN hybrids that pair a CNN feature extractor with LSTM or GRU sequence modeling. They are used for tasks such as video prediction, precipitation nowcasting, speech and music recognition, and handwriting recognition, where spatial patterns and their evolution both matter. Their advantage over simpler recurrent or convolutional baselines is not universal, so current work tests architecture efficiency, physical constraints, and performance across multiple metrics and settings.
