Coreference Resolution
Overview
Coreference resolution finds mentions such as names, pronouns, and descriptions, then determines which refer to the same person, object, or event across a text or conversation. Systems use span detection and clustering, mention-ranking models, lexical matching, contextual embeddings, and increasingly large language models; extensions connect references across documents or align text with images and dialogue objects. Evaluation uses resources such as OntoNotes, PreCo, and ECB+ alongside multilingual and morphologically rich language benchmarks, often reporting CoNLL F1. A central challenge is that scores can conceal sensitivity to mention boundaries, annotation choices, and small context changes, so robust generalization remains unsettled.
