Crack Segmentation
Overview
Crack segmentation maps thin, branching defects in images of roads, buildings, industrial materials, and other surfaces, enabling measurement and assessment beyond simple crack detection. Methods include CNNs, Transformers and Mamba-style models, often augmented with edge, directional, uncertainty, or topology-aware features to preserve narrow boundaries and connected crack paths. Researchers also use synthetic data, weak labels, and vision foundation models to address sparse annotations and transfer across domains, evaluating on pavement, infrastructure, and materials imagery with overlap and connectivity metrics. A central challenge is balancing accurate, continuous masks with resistance to texture and noise while generalizing across cameras, materials, and missing or changing input modalities.
