Safe Bayesian Optimization
Overview
Safe Bayesian optimization studies how to improve an unknown system without making experiments that violate limits such as temperature, stability, or collision risk. Common approaches use Gaussian-process models and uncertainty bounds to choose promising experiments inside a safe region, with newer methods also using conformal prediction, sampled uncertainty tubes, partial physics models, or feedback about crashes and preferences. These methods are useful for expensive physical experiments and robotic control, where failures can be costly and observations are limited. The central tension is between exploring enough to find good designs and maintaining reliable safety guarantees, which can depend on modeling assumptions and may weaken under distribution shift.
