Abstract

In several applications it is desired to have 3D models not only from the outdoor spaces but also from inside the building. In the context of First Responder enhancement in large scale natural and man-made disasters, a method is presented to achieve this goal with a high degree of automation. Therefore an autonomously flying aerial mapping system is combined with a person-carried indoor positioning system. Automatically recognized markers (AprilTags) are geo-referenced by the aerial system and their coordinates are sent to the ground-based system. By looking at the AprilTags before entering the building, the ground-based system is registered to world coordinates. Without the further need of any global positioning, it creates a point cloud from the indoor spaces that fits with the point could from the aerial view. This allows a co-visualization of both point-clouds as a seamless indoor-outdoor 3D model in real time.

INSIGHT: Indoor Scene Intelligence from Geometric-Semantic Hierarchy Transfer for Public~Safety

Indoor environments lack the spatial intelligence infrastructure that GPS provides outdoors; first responders arriving at unfamiliar buildings typically have no machine-readable map of safety equipment. Prior work on 3D semantic segmentation for public safety identified two barriers: scarcity of labeled indoor training data and poor recognition of small safety-critical features by native point-cloud methods. This paper presents INSIGHT, a zero-target-domain-annotation pipeline that projects 2D image understanding into 3D metric space via registered RGB-D data. Two interchangeable vision stacks share a common 3D back end: a SAM3 foundation-model stack for text-prompted segmentation, and a traditional CV stack (open-set detection, VQA, OCR) whose intermediate outputs are independently inspectable. Evaluated on all seven subareas of Stanford 2D-3D-S (70{,}496 images), the pipeline produces Pointcept-schema-compatible labeled point clouds and ISO19164-compliant scene graphs with 104×{\sim}10^{4}{\times} compression; role-filtered payloads transmit in <15{<}15,s at 1,Mbps over FirstNet Band14. We report per-point labeling accuracy on 7 shared classes, detection sensitivity for 15 safety-critical classes absent from public 3D benchmarks alongside code-capped deployable estimates, and inter-pipeline complementarity, demonstrating that 2D-to-3D semantic transfer addresses the labeled-data bottleneck while scene graphs provide building intelligence compact enough for field deployment.

AerialFusionMapNet: Online HD Map Construction with Aerial-Onboard BEV Fusion

High-resolution aerial imagery has recently emerged as a complementary modality for automated driving perception and has shown potential to improve birds-eye-view (BEV) scene understanding when fused with onboard sensors. Prior work demonstrated performance gains for online high-definition (HD) map construction through aerial-onboard fusion; however, conventional end-to-end fusion does not fully exploit the structural information contained in aerial representations. In this work, we introduce AerialFusionMapNet, a fusion-based mapping framework with a structured two-stage training strategy that explicitly enhances the contribution of aerial features within a unified pipeline. The proposed training scheme enables more effective integration of structural aerial priors. On the nuScenes geographic split, AerialFusionMapNet achieves up to 54.7 mAP, improving over prior aerial-onboard fusion baselines from 48.8 mAP by +5.9 absolute and +12.1% relative. The results suggest that structured training design, rather than increased architectural complexity, plays a more decisive role in unlocking the full potential of aerial imagery for online HD map construction. Semantic-Aware Guided Drone Exploration for Language-Conditioned 3D Indoor Mapping

We present Semantic-Aware Guided Exploration, SAGE, a system for open-vocabulary exploration in unknown 3D indoor environments that preserves coverage-oriented behavior while allowing semantic cues to reprioritize frontier selection. Building on the FALCON volumetric explorer, SAGE integrates Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) via four key components: object-centric embedding storage, a temporal cache that projects recent observations onto the free-unknown boundary, object frontiers for high-similarity detections, and a unified semantic-geometric planning cost. This cost function bounds semantic reweighting influence, ensuring frontiers are prioritized without sacrificing total coverage. In Matterport3D-based simulations, SAGE outperforms FALCON and a semantic-only ablation in object discovery across map-query pairs. Compared to Finding Things in the Unknown (FTU), SAGE completes exploration 9.0 to 25.9 times faster across the nine shared map-query pairs, achieving a mean speedup of 13.7. Furthermore, SAGE achieves substantially higher volumetric throughput than FTU. Finally, we deploy SAGE in five real-world flights in two environments on a Modal AI Starling 2 quadrotor with onboard sensing and planning, and offboard CLIP inference. Comparing SAGE and FALCON, we find that while FALCON results in faster exploration and shorter mapping trajectories, SAGE outperforms FALCON in terms of object discovery.
