StereoGeo: an end-to-end stereo camera calibration method

Authors: Imane MeddourAndréa Macario BarrosCédric Gouy-Pailler

Abstract

In this work, we propose StereoGeo, an end-to-end network-based approach for stereo camera calibration. Our method estimates the focal lengths and gravity directions of the left and right cameras, as well as the relative extrinsic transformation relating them. Existing methods often rely on calibration patterns in structured environments or address only a single camera configuration, being limited to either intrinsic or extrinsic estimation, and depending on a multi-view setups. StereoGeo extends the GeoCalib algorithm, integrating deep neural network feature extraction with a differentiable optimizer. Extensive experiments on real-world benchmarks demonstrate that StereoGeo achieves competitive performance for intrinsic calibration and provides accurate stereo extrinsic estimation, outperforming existing methods that are limited to monocular settings. TESO: Online Tracking of Essential Matrix by Stochastic Optimization

Maintaining long-term accuracy of stereo camera calibration parameters is important for autonomous systems' perception. This work proposes Online Tracking of Essential Matrix by Stochastic Optimization (TESO). The core mechanisms of TESO are: 1) a robust loss function based on kernel correlation over tentative correspondences, 2) an adaptive online stochastic optimization on the essential manifold. TESO has low CPU and memory requirements, relies on a few hyperparameters, and eliminates the need for data-driven training, enabling the usage in resource-constrained online perception systems. We evaluated the influence of TESO on geometric precision, rectification quality, and stereo depth consistency. On the large-scale MAN TruckScenes dataset, TESO tracks rotational calibration drift with 0.12 deg precision in the Y-axis (critical for stereo accuracy) while the X- and Z-axes are five times more precise. Tracking applied to sequences with simulated drift shows similar precision with respect to the reference as tracking applied to no-drift sequences, indicating the tracker is unbiased. On the KITTI dataset, TESO revealed systematic inconsistencies in extrinsic parameters across stereo pairs, confirming previous published findings. We verified that intrinsic decalibration affected these errors, as evidenced by the conflicting behavior of the rectification and depth metrics. After correcting the reference calibration, TESO improved its rotation precision around the Y-axis 20 times to 0.025 deg and its depth accuracy 50 times. Despite its lightweight design, direct optimization of the proposed TESO loss function alone achieves accuracy comparable to that of neural network-based single-frame methods.

FoundationGeo: Learning Spatial Pixel-Wise Fields for Monocular Metric Geometry

We present FoundationGeo, a two-stage framework that explicitly bridges relative and metric prediction via spatial calibration and principled data design. Stage 1 learns a high-fidelity, affine-invariant geometry model by initializing with DINOv3 and training on a curated 10.2M-sample multi-domain corpus with complementary local-detail supervision, yielding sharp boundaries and strong cross-domain generalization. Stage 2 moves beyond global scaling by introducing lightweight pixel-wise calibration fields for metric estimation: a scale field for spatially varying metric alignment and a ray-direction correction field that mitigates directional bias in point-map geometry, together producing metrically consistent 3D point maps. Beyond model design, we identify camera intrinsic coverage, especially focal length distribution mismatch between training and test data, as a key bottleneck for zero-shot metric generalization: performance drops sharply when test intrinsics fall outside the training distribution. To address this, we synthesize additional training data across diverse focal lengths using a Blender-based data engine, repairing under-covered focal regimes and improving robustness under intrinsic shift. Extensive zero-shot evaluations across seven benchmarks show that FoundationGeo significantly strengthens cross-domain robustness, staying near the top across diverse domains while avoiding the sharp cross-domain performance drops observed in other methods. This consistency translates into the best overall performance, surpassing heavier baselines by over 5.2% on average.

GeoStereo: A Unified Stereo Geometry Estimation Framework for Disparity and Surface Normal

Stereo matching and surface normal estimation are fundamental tasks in 3D vision. However, existing feed-forward stereo methods still struggle to produce reliable predictions in challenging regions, mainly due to the lack of strong geometric priors. In this paper, we propose GeoStereo\textbf{GeoStereo}, a unified stereo geometry estimation framework that leverages powerful diffusion priors to jointly predict disparity and surface normals. Specifically, GeoStereo couples a feed-forward stereo matching pipeline with a diffusion-based normal estimation branch. To enable effective interaction between the two tasks, we introduce a disparity to normal initialization strategy and construct a warp to left-view condition for the diffusion process. This coupled design allows the diffusion branch to provide strong structural priors that enhance disparity estimation in ill-posed regions, while the feed-forward branch offers reliable geometric guidance for accurate normal prediction. Extensive experiments show that GeoStereo performs reliably in challenging scenarios, including low-light environments, highly reflective surfaces, and transparent objects. Under zero-shot settings, it achieves Rank-1 disparity estimation on multiple benchmarks, including KITTI and NYUv2, and delivers the best normal estimation accuracy on many real indoor benchmarks, such as iBims-1 and ScanNet.
