Abstract

Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) enable rapid indoor 3D reconstruction for inspection and time-critical situational awareness, but must operate under strict flight-time budgets and safety constraints that require explicit return-to-home (RTH) feasibility with a conservative margin. We present a topology-first active reconstruction framework that decouples high-fidelity rendering from navigation. A dense 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) map is optimized as the reconstruction target, while a lightweight Truncated Signed Distance Field (TSDF)/occupancy scaffold supports conservative collision checking and online construction of a sparse 3D Voronoi skeleton roadmap. Since directly extracting roadmaps from TSDF geometry can be unstable under noisy and incomplete online fusion, we validate nodes and edges using carved free-space consistency and dense visibility checks, which suppress behind-wall phantom structure and stabilize planning. Viewpoints are selected on the roadmap using a flight-time-budget-aware objective and a lightweight receding-horizon lookahead to improve non-myopic exploration behavior. We evaluate on photorealistic indoor simulation benchmarks (ReplicaCAD, Gibson, and HM3D), reporting reconstruction coverage/error, RTH success, and computational cost. Results demonstrate improved or competitive performance relative to recent GS-based baselines under identical flight-time budgets.

NavArena: Automated Construction of Goal-Oriented Navigation Benchmarks from 3D Gaussian Splatting Reconstructions

Fixed 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) reconstructions provide realistic novel views but lack the traversability constraints, valid goals, and closed-loop protocols required for navigation evaluation. We introduce NavArena, an automated framework that transforms fixed 3DGS reconstructions into benchmarks for goal-oriented visual navigation. NavArena integrates a frozen 3DGS model for egocentric RGB-D rendering, an occupancy costmap derived from Gaussian density and height statistics for reachability and collision queries, and semantic goal candidates lifted from multi-view open-vocabulary masks. These components support the automatic generation and unified closed-loop evaluation of goal-oriented navigation episodes. Across more than 2{,}000 scenes, NavArena generates 22.2 million expert trajectories. Spatial and semantic evaluations assess the derived navigation representations, while policy rollouts demonstrate the diagnostic value of the unified evaluation protocol. NavArena enables scalable and reproducible navigation evaluation on large-scale 3DGS reconstructions, and all benchmark-generation tools, evaluation protocols, and derived assets will be released publicly.

OpenFlyScan: A Quality-Guided Aerial Reconstruction System for Consumer Drones

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) provides high-fidelity scenes for large-scale embodied simulation, but constructing large-scale urban assets remains constrained by expensive equipment and delayed quality feedback. Preset surveys can leave complex surfaces insufficiently observed, with defects discovered only after reconstruction, requiring return visits and repeated processing. We present OpenFlyScan, a quality-guided aerial reconstruction system for consumer drones that integrates a GS quality model, a reacquisition planner, and a custom-designed mobile app. The model learns from GS rendering errors to predict regional reconstruction quality. Based on these predictions, the planner then generates complementary reacquisition strips to be executed through the app, which also supports automated oblique surveys and data transfer without additional hardware on board. Across real aerial scenes, the model effectively identifies regions that are likely to be poorly reconstructed. In the Expo West field experiment, targeted reacquisition improves PSNR at additional views by 10.95 dB. With consumer drones, OpenFlyScan integrates capture, targeted reacquisition, and reconstruction to support rapid, low-cost urban asset creation. Code and models will be made publicly available at https://openflyscan.github.io/.

MoonSplat: Monocular Online Gaussian Splatting with Sim(3) Global Optimization

Online 3D reconstruction from monocular image sequences is a challenging and ongoing research topic. 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), leveraging its high-quality real-time rendering capability, empowers online 3D reconstruction to represent dense scenes with enhanced expressiveness, and thus holds great promise for a wide range of applications such as robotics and AR/VR. However, existing online 3DGS methods still suffer from some key challenges: fragile camera pose estimation due to the lack of global optimization, and low optimization efficiency in large-scale or long-sequence scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a robust and efficient online voxelized 3DGS reconstruction framework integrated with global Sim(3)\text{Sim}(3) optimization, which enables reliable camera tracking and efficient global loop closure for both camera poses and voxelized 3DGS. To accelerate the convergence of the voxelized 3DGS, we further introduce a color residual learning strategy, which not only boosts optimization speed but also enhances rendering quality. Extensive experiments on diverse indoor and outdoor datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both camera pose estimation accuracy and rendering quality, while retaining real-time efficiency. Additionally, we develop and deploy a real-world UAV-based active reconstruction system grounded on our proposed method, validating its robustness and generalizability for practical online 3D reconstruction tasks.
