BridgeAfford: Bridging Query-Target Gap for Generalizable 3D Affordance Grounding

Language-guided 3D affordance grounding aims to localize functional regions on 3D objects according to interaction intents. However, existing methods exhibit poor generalization to unseen objects. One challenge is the query-target gap: a semantic discrepancy between query features encoding interaction intents and target-region features, leading to inaccurate grounding. End-to-end training favors query representations tailored to seen objects, limiting their compatibility with shifted target-region features on unseen objects. To address this issue, we propose BridgeAfford, a framework that reduces the query-target semantic gap from two complementary perspectives. First, Interaction Region Alignment (IRA) promotes cross-object alignment among geometrically similar interaction regions during training. This enables structures on unseen objects that resemble previously observed ones to produce representations similar to those learned during training, facilitating target-region recognition. Second, Visual Evidence Aggregation (VEA) leverages a 2D affordance model to refine the attention distribution and guide the query toward the correct region, yielding more target-aware queries. Extensive experiments on the LASO and PIAD datasets demonstrate that BridgeAfford outperforms existing methods, particularly on unseen objects, highlighting its robust generalization ability.

UniAfford: Token-Routed Multitask Learning for Generalizable 2D-3D Affordance Perception

Affordance perception aims to localize actionable regions supporting embodied interaction, yet 2D and 3D affordance grounding have evolved as separate problems, with different task definitions, supervision formats, datasets, and evaluation protocols. This fragmentation limits the learning of transferable object-affordance semantics across visual and geometric spaces. We propose Token Router for Tasks, a multitask training paradigm for MLLM-based systems that routes contextual hidden states to task-specific branches without requiring the language head to generate predefined markers. Routed states are supervised directly by branch-specific objectives, enabling dense prediction losses to shape shared MLLM representations. We instantiate this paradigm as UniAfford, a unified framework for generalizable 2D-3D affordance perception, together with UniAfford-Data, a dataset integrating pixel-level 2D annotations, point-level 3D annotations, and language instructions under a shared object-affordance taxonomy, supporting heterogeneous supervision through semantic-level 2D-3D pairing. UniAfford adopts an MLLM as a shared semantic hub and a modality-aware token router to produce image- and point-cloud-affordance queries. These queries respectively condition a SAM-style pixel decoder and a SONATA-based point decoder, enabling flexible 2D, 3D, and joint affordance inference from image-only, point-cloud-only, or paired multimodal inputs. Experiments demonstrate strong zero-shot generalization across 2D and 3D affordance benchmarks without target-specific fine-tuning, alongside state-of-the-art branch-wise performance under modality-isolated protocols. Ablations validate token routing, joint 2D-3D supervision, and decoder coupling, while language-head diagnostics show that routed latent states carry meaningful object-affordance semantics. AffordAny: Open-World 3D Affordance Grounding from Monocular RGB Images via Vision-Language-Guided Geometric Reasoning

Open-world 3D affordance grounding requires localizing functional object parts in 3D given free-form language queries. Existing methods typically assume pre-built object-centric 3D geometry and closed affordance ontologies, limiting deployment from raw RGB observations. We present AffordAny, an end-to-end framework that uses one monocular RGB image to construct large-scale text-conditioned 3D part supervision, ground affordances with a frozen vision-language model (VLM) guided decoder, and improve open-world generalization through pseudo-label self-training. Our automated pipeline produces a benchmark of 5,334 objects and 10,633 part-level samples spanning 473 categories, an order-of-magnitude increase in categorical diversity over prior work. The decoder progressively fuses frozen Cosmos-2B features with 3D geometry through spatial projection, instruction-conditioned semantic compression, and bidirectional geometry-semantics interaction. Minimal-perturbation pseudo-label self-training further adds new objects without human annotation. Under a systematic generalization protocol evaluating unseen objects, unseen categories, and unseen instruction paraphrases, our approach achieves 0.428 IoU on unseen objects and 0.315 IoU on unseen categories after self-training, with unseen-category mIoU improving by 6.3% relative (p<0.01) and an instruction sensitivity gap of only 0.105, demonstrating effectiveness and robustness of our method.

FUSE: Active Functional Affordance Grounding through Adaptive Semantic-Geometric Evidence Acquisition

Embodied agents must often identify and interact with objects based on their function rather than their identity, requiring them to actively acquire observations that reveal discriminative functional evidence. Existing affordance grounding methods operate from fixed viewpoints and lack mechanisms for deciding where to look when functional cues are occluded or incomplete. We introduce Active Functional Affordance Grounding, a new task in which an agent sequentially explores a scene to identify and spatially ground an object satisfying a functional query. To address this problem, we propose FUSE, an adaptive semantic-geometric evidence acquisition framework that combines explicit uncertainty-driven exploration with a learned amortized planner to efficiently select informative viewpoints. We further introduce a Habitat-based benchmark for evaluating active functional grounding. Experiments show that FUSE achieves the highest observed non-oracle grounding performance while reducing computation by 1.33x relative to fully explicit exploration, and remains effective across multiple affordance knowledge sources.

ThinkAfford: Affordance-Centric Reasoning for Fine-Grained 3D Grounding in Cluttered Scenes

Task-driven 3D affordance grounding aims to localize the functional region in a cluttered 3D scene that enables an action specified by a natural-language instruction. Existing methods either predict 3D masks directly or construct them by selecting and fusing intermediate 2D/3D regions. However, they remain vulnerable to two intertwined failure modes: the predicted or selected regions may miss the target interaction area or have unsuitable granularity, while language grounding may confuse visually similar alternatives under relational instructions. To this end, we introduce ThinkAfford, which decouples high-recall affordance proposal generation from instruction-grounded reasoning. Specifically, the Affordance Proposal Generation module first uses learnable affordance prompts and multi-level visual features to predict interaction-conditioned heatmaps, extracting a variable number of fine-grained proposals without parsed object or part names as segmentation prompts. Visual-Prompted Affordance Reasoning then reasons over labeled proposal overlays using the full instruction, returning identifiers in a structured "think-then-answer" response. Moreover, Group Relative Policy Optimization uses proposal-level rewards from lifted 3D overlap to align VPAR selection with final 3D grounding. On the SceneFun3D validation split, ThinkAfford achieves 10.69% AP50 and 25.46% AP25 under the official evaluator, outperforming comparable 3D open-vocabulary and vision-language-model-based 2D-to-3D baselines. Module-level diagnostics further show that APG attains 77.5% recall at 25% intersection-over-union, while GRPO-trained VPAR achieves 72.1% selection accuracy on APG-covered queries, compared with 63.4% under supervised fine-tuning.

GROW2^2: Grounding Which and Where for Robot Tool Use

Can the robot use a plate to cut a cake if no knife is available? Tool use greatly expands robot capabilities, but to use tools creatively beyond their intended functions, the robot faces the challenge of open-world affordance grounding\textit{open-world affordance grounding}: select an open-category object to act as a tool and localize its specific region of action. To this end, we introduce GROW2^2 (GROunding Which and Where), which leverages object parts as a natural abstraction to split the grounding process hierarchically into semantic and geometric levels, thus bypassing the need for data-heavy, end-to-end training. Semantically, GROW2^2 harnesses the commonsense reasoning of Vision-Language Models (VLMs) to parse a natural-language task instruction, select a suitable object as the tool, and identify task-relevant parts on the tool and the target object. Geometrically, vision foundation models then ground the selected parts into precise 3D regions from a single RGB-D image. Experiments on established benchmarks show that GROW2^2 outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on affordance prediction benchmarks. Further, it achieves zero-shot generalization over open-category objects and outperforms baselines in both simulated and real-world robot tool use experiments.

Grounding by Remembering: Cross-Scene and In-Scene Memory for 3D Functional Affordances

Functional affordance grounding requires more than recognizing an object: an agent must localize the specific region that supports an interaction, such as the handle to pull or the button to press. This is difficult for training-free vision-language pipelines because actionable regions are often small, visually ambiguous, and repeated across multiple same-category instances in a scene. We propose AFFORDMEM, a framework that grounds 3D functional affordances by remembering geometry at two levels. The first is cross-scene affordance memory: the agent maintains a category-level memory bank of RGB images with affordance regions rendered as overlays, and recalls the most informative examples at query time to guide a frozen VLM toward small operable subregions that text-only prompting consistently misses. The second is in-scene spatial memory: as the agent processes the scene, it organizes candidate instances and their 3D spatial relations into a structured scene graph, enabling the language model to resolve references over distant or currently unobserved candidates such as "the second handle from the top." AFFORDMEM requires no model fine-tuning and no target-scene annotation, using a reusable memory bank built from source scenes. On SceneFun3D, our method improves AP50 over the prior training-free state of the art by 3.23 on Split 0 and 3.7 on Split 1. Ablation studies support complementary benefits: cross-scene affordance memory improves fine-grained localization, while in-scene spatial memory provides the larger gain on spatially qualified queries. VoxAfford: Multi-Scale Voxel-Token Fusion for Open-Vocabulary 3D Affordance Detection

Open-vocabulary 3D affordance detection requires localizing interaction regions on point clouds given novel affordance descriptions. Recent methods extend multimodal large language models (MLLMs) with special output tokens that are decoded into segmentation masks. However, these tokens are produced through autoregressive generation, which models sequential dependencies rather than spatial neighborhood relations, leaving them semantically rich but spatially impoverished for 3D localization. We propose Voxel-enhanced Affordance detection (VoxAfford), which bypasses this bottleneck by injecting multi-scale geometric features from a frozen pre-trained 3D VQVAE encoder into the output tokens after generation. Each output token uses its affordance semantics as a query to retrieve relevant geometric patterns from its paired voxel scale via cross-attention, with a learned compatibility gate controlling the injection strength. The enhanced tokens are then aggregated into a spatially-aware affordance prompt through semantic-conditioned attention and propagated alongside per-point features to generate the final mask. Experiments on open-vocabulary affordance detection tasks show that VoxAfford achieves state-of-the-art performance with approximately an 8% improvement in mIoU, and real robot experiments confirm zero-shot transfer to novel objects.

CompassAD: Intent-Driven 3D Affordance Grounding in Functionally Competing Objects

When told to "cut the cake," a robot must choose the knife over nearby scissors, despite both objects affording the same cutting function. In real-world scenes, multiple objects may share identical affordances, yet only one is appropriate under the given task context. We call such cases confusing pairs. However, existing 3D affordance methods largely sidestep this challenge by evaluating isolated single objects, often with explicit category names provided in the query. We formalize Intent-Driven Confusable Affordance Grounding, a new 3D affordance setting that requires predicting a per-point affordance mask on the correct object within a multi-object point cloud, conditioned on implicit natural language intent. To study this problem, we construct CompassAD, the first benchmark centered on implicit intent in confusing multi-object compositions. It comprises 30 confusing object pairs spanning 16 affordance types, 6,422 compositions, and 88K+ query-answer pairs. Furthermore, we propose CompassNet, a framework that incorporates two dedicated modules tailored to this task. Instance-bounded Cross Injection (ICI) constrains language-geometry alignment within object boundaries to prevent cross-object semantic leakage. Bi-level Contrastive Refinement (BCR) enforces discrimination at both geometric-group and point levels, sharpening distinctions between target and confusable surfaces. Extensive experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art results on both seen and unseen queries, and deployment on a robotic manipulator confirms effective transfer to real-world grasping in confusing multi-object compositions.

UniFunc3D: Unified Active Spatial-Temporal Grounding for 3D Affordance Segmentation

Affordance segmentation in 3D scenes requires an agent to ground implicit natural-language instructions into precise masks of fine-grained interactive elements. Existing training-free methods typically rely on fragmented pipelines, which introduce visual blindness during task parsing and limit accuracy through single-scale spatial and temporal processing. We present UniFunc3D, a unified and training-free framework that treats the multimodal large language model as an active observer. By utilizing a unified MLLM backbone, UniFunc3D performs joint semantic-temporal-spatial reasoning to ground task decomposition in direct visual evidence. Our approach introduces active spatial-temporal grounding with a coarse-to-fine strategy. This allows the model to select correct video frames adaptively and focus on high-detail interactive parts while preserving the global context necessary for disambiguation. On SceneFun3D, our UniFunc3D achieves state-of-the-art performance, surpassing prior training-free methods by a large margin with a relative 59.9% mIoU improvement, and even outperforming training-based methods without any task-specific training. Part-Aware Open-Vocabulary 3D Affordance Grounding via Prototypical Semantic and Geometric Alignment

Grounding natural language questions to functionally relevant regions in 3D objects -- termed language-driven 3D affordance grounding -- is essential for embodied intelligence and human-AI interaction. Existing methods, while progressing from label-based to language-driven approaches, still face challenges in open-vocabulary generalization, fine-grained geometric alignment, and part-level semantic consistency. To address these issues, we propose a novel two-stage cross-modal framework that enhances both semantic and geometric representations for open-vocabulary 3D affordance grounding. In the first stage, large language models generate part-aware instructions to recover missing semantics, enabling the model to link semantically similar affordances. In the second stage, we introduce two key components: Affordance Prototype Aggregation (APA), which captures cross-object geometric consistency for each affordance, and Intra-Object Relational Modeling (IORM), which refines geometric differentiation within objects to support precise semantic alignment. We validate the effectiveness of our method through extensive experiments on a newly introduced benchmark, as well as two existing benchmarks, demonstrating superior performance in comparison with existing methods.

HAMMER: Harnessing MLLM via Cross-Modal Integration for Intention-Driven 3D Affordance Grounding

Humans commonly identify 3D object affordance through observed interactions in images or videos, and once formed, such knowledge can be generically generalized to novel objects. Inspired by this principle, we advocate for a novel framework that leverages emerging multimodal large language models (MLLMs) for interaction intention-driven 3D affordance grounding, namely HAMMER. Instead of generating explicit object attribute descriptions or relying on off-the-shelf 2D segmenters, we alternatively aggregate the interaction intention depicted in the image into a contact-aware embedding and guide the model to infer textual affordance labels, ensuring it thoroughly excavates object semantics and contextual cues. We further devise a hierarchical cross-modal integration mechanism to fully exploit the complementary information from the MLLM for 3D representation refinement and introduce a multi-granular geometry lifting module that infuses spatial characteristics into the extracted intention embedding, thus facilitating accurate 3D affordance localization. Extensive experiments on public datasets and our newly constructed corrupted benchmark demonstrate the superiority and robustness of HAMMER compared to existing approaches. All code and weights are publicly available.

VAGNet: Grounding 3D Affordance from Human-Object Interactions in Videos

3D object affordance grounding aims to identify regions on 3D objects that support human-object interaction (HOI), a capability essential to embodied visual reasoning. However, most existing approaches rely on static visual or textual cues, neglecting that affordances are inherently defined by dynamic actions. As a result, they often struggle to localize the true contact regions involved in real interactions. We take a different perspective. Humans learn how to use objects by observing and imitating actions, not just by examining shapes. Motivated by this intuition, we introduce video-guided 3D affordance grounding, which leverages dynamic interaction sequences to provide functional supervision. To achieve this, we propose VAGNet, a framework that aligns video-derived interaction cues with 3D structure to resolve ambiguities that static cues cannot address. To support this new setting, we introduce PVAD, the first HOI video-3D pairing affordance dataset, providing functional supervision unavailable in prior works. Extensive experiments on PVAD show that VAGNet achieves state-of-the-art performance, significantly outperforming static-based baselines. The code and dataset will be open publicly.

Diffusion Models are Open-World Affordance Learners: Leveraging Generative Priors for 3D Affordance Learning

3D affordance grounding aims to understand how diverse objects can be manipulated, making it a cornerstone of embodied interaction. However, prior works struggle to generalize to out-of-distribution, open-world scenarios, leaving a critical gap between limited dataset performance and real-world application needs. Inspired by the saying: ``What I can not create, I do not understand'', we find generative models can generate semantically valid HOI images, which indicates inherent encoding of affordance concepts. Building on this insight, we propose DAG, the first innovative diffusion-based 3D affordance grounding framework that extracts general affordance knowledge from text-to-image diffusion models for 3D affordance prediction. Specifically, we extract the affordance priors from a diffusion model to encode HOI priors, and design an affordance block with a multi-source affordance decoder for dense 3D affordance prediction. Extensive experiments show that DAG consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods and exhibits strong open-world generalization, even in the challenging one-shot setting. The code of our method is released on \textcolor{blue}{*https://github.com/hq-King/DAG*}.

Affogato: Open-Vocabulary Affordance Grounding with Automated Data Generation at Scale

Affordance grounding aims to localize where to interact with an object, a fundamental capability for embodied agents. Yet progress is bottlenecked by data: manual annotation is prohibitively expensive and confines existing datasets to a narrow set of predefined object and affordance categories. We introduce Affogato, a framework for open-vocabulary affordance grounding centered on Affogato-750K, a large-scale dataset of 750K 3D affordance heatmaps paired with natural language queries. We build it with a fully automated pipeline that orchestrates foundation models to generate them at scale without human labeling. It covers significantly more diverse categories than any existing dataset. For reliable evaluation, we further provide 5K human-verified test pairs. We also present Espresso-3D and Espresso-2D, simple yet effective models with a unified architecture across both modalities. Pretraining on Affogato-750K improves both Espresso and prior methods and yields the largest gains on unseen object and affordance categories, showing that it provides broadly transferable supervision across architectures.
