Reconstructing 1-m imagery from Sentinel-2 combines two difficulties. The input and the reference are observed by different satellites, which differ in spatial resolution, spectral response, radiometry, acquisition time, and local geometry, so no synthetic degradation operator links them. The required magnification of ten in each spatial dimension also far exceeds the factors of two to four at which remote sensing super-resolution is usually developed. We study this real-world problem using YREB-SR, which pairs 2022 Sentinel-2 RGB composites with 2022 Jilin-1 RGB references resampled to a 1-m grid over the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The benchmark contains 11,559 geographically matched scene pairs, with 6,409, 2,135, and 3,015 assigned to training, validation, and testing, respectively. We develop CrossVAR, a visual autoregressive model that predicts the 1-m latent as a nine-scale hierarchy conditioned on the Sentinel-2 input and estimates the remaining quantization residual with a diffusion refiner run without injected noise. Complete 1600 1600 scenes are reconstructed in overlapping windows that start on the Sentinel-2 pixel grid, as every training patch does, and every window is decoded at the size on which the decoder was trained before the windows are blended with Gaussian weights. On all 3,015 test scenes, CrossVAR achieves 27.60 dB PSNR, 0.7725 SSIM, 0.1451 LPIPS, and 7.15 FID, the best value of each metric among the compared methods. These results establish a strong autoregressive baseline for large-scale cross-sensor reconstruction. Detail Continuation over a Trustworthy Coarse Scale for Autoregressive Super-Resolution
Hallucination remains a persistent challenge in generative super-resolution (GSR), where reconstructed results may contain visually plausible yet weakly supported content, structural deviations, or unnatural textures with respect to the low-resolution (LR) input. Existing GSR methods have extensively explored the trade-off between perceptual realism and reconstruction fidelity, but the division between preserving reliable coarse-scale information and restoring more uncertain fine details is often handled implicitly within the overall restoration process. Visual autoregressive (VAR) modeling provides a natural opportunity to revisit this issue, as its coarse-to-fine next-scale prediction offers an explicit scale-wise generation interface. However, existing VAR-based SR methods still inherit the original full 1-to- autoregressive generation path, even though, for super-resolution, coarse-scale information in LR is often relatively more reliable, while long autoregressive chains may accumulate prediction errors. Motivated by these observations, we propose K2N, which reformulates VAR-based SR from full-path generation into a -to- detail continuation process. Specifically, early coarse-scale states are established directly from LR, while only the remaining finer scales are restored autoregressively. Experimental results show that K2N remains competitive with the VARSR baseline on standard SR metrics, while exhibiting clearer advantages on hallucination-focused evaluation. These findings suggest that explicitly rethinking the generation path in a scale-wise manner can be a promising direction for improving the reliability of generative super-resolution. Our code will be released soon at https://github.com/BRL-SYSU/K2NSR.
SkelEM: Training-Signal Decoupling of Skeleton and Diffusion for Self-supervised Axial Super-Resolution in Volume Microscopy
Volume microscopy, including electron and light microscopy, suffers from severe anisotropic resolution due to physical axial sectioning. Existing self-supervised axial super-resolution (ASR) methods face a trilemma bounded by overly smoothed regression textures, structural hallucinations of pure diffusion models, and prohibitive inference latency. In this paper, we propose Skeleton-refinE Microscopy (SkelEM), a self-supervised framework that decouples ASR at the training-signal level: a frozen topological network and a diffusion refiner are optimized by disjoint objectives, separating low-frequency topology formulation from high-frequency detail enhancement. Building on this deterministic skeleton, we exploit a unified cycle-consistent mechanism on input sparse slices to simultaneously extract a real-domain residual prior and bidirectionally align the diffusion refiner, washing away cross-plane artifacts without synthetic bias. By truncating the reverse diffusion process with this physical prior, SkelEM achieves high-fidelity detail restoration in merely steps. To rigorously assess cross-instrument generalization, we further introduce BRAVE-ASR, a new benchmark of co-aligned anisotropic and isotropic volumes acquired on a Plasma-FIB instrument. Across public benchmarks, SkelEM achieves the most favorable balance across the fidelity-perception trade-off among self-supervised methods, with state-of-the-art downstream membrane segmentation performance and robust zero-shot generalization across distinct modalities.
Hierarchical Image Tokenization for Multi-Scale Image Super Resolution
We introduce a multi-scale Image Super Resolution (ISR) method building on recent advances in Visual Auto-Regressive (VAR) modeling. VAR models break image tokenization into additive, gradually increasing scales, using Residual Quantization (RQ), an approach that aligns perfectly with our target ISR task. Previous works taking advantage of this synergy suffer from two main shortcomings. First, due to the limitations in RQ, they only generate images at a predefined fixed scale, failing to map intermediate outputs to the corresponding image scales. They also rely on large backbones or a large corpus of annotated data to achieve better performance. To address both shortcomings, we introduce two novel components to the VAR training for ISR, aiming at increasing its flexibility and reducing its complexity. In particular, we introduce a) a Hierarchical Image Tokenization (HIT) approach that progressively represents images at different scales while enforcing token overlap across scales, and b) a Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) regularization term that, relying solely on the (LR,HR) pair, encourages the transformer to produce the latter over the former. Our proposed HIT acts as a strong inductive bias for the VAR training, resulting in a small model (300M params vs 1B params of VARSR), that achieves state-of-the-art results without external training data, and that delivers multi-scale outputs with a single forward pass.
VARestorer: One-Step VAR Distillation for Real-World Image Super-Resolution
Recent advancements in visual autoregressive models (VAR) have demonstrated their effectiveness in image generation, highlighting their potential for real-world image super-resolution (Real-ISR). However, adapting VAR for ISR presents critical challenges. The next-scale prediction mechanism, constrained by causal attention, fails to fully exploit global low-quality (LQ) context, resulting in blurry and inconsistent high-quality (HQ) outputs. Additionally, error accumulation in the iterative prediction severely degrades coherence in ISR task. To address these issues, we propose VARestorer, a simple yet effective distillation framework that transforms a pre-trained text-to-image VAR model into a one-step ISR model. By leveraging distribution matching, our method eliminates the need for iterative refinement, significantly reducing error propagation and inference time. Furthermore, we introduce pyramid image conditioning with cross-scale attention, which enables bidirectional scale-wise interactions and fully utilizes the input image information while adapting to the autoregressive mechanism. This prevents later LQ tokens from being overlooked in the transformer. By fine-tuning only 1.2% of the model parameters through parameter-efficient adapters, our method maintains the expressive power of the original VAR model while significantly enhancing efficiency. Extensive experiments show that VARestorer achieves state-of-the-art performance with 72.32 MUSIQ and 0.7669 CLIPIQA on DIV2K dataset, while accelerating inference by 10 times compared to conventional VAR inference.
Enhanced Self-Supervised Multi-Image Super-Resolution for Camera Array Images
Conventional multi-image super-resolution (MISR) methods, such as burst and video SR, rely on sequential frames from a single camera. Consequently, they suffer from complex image degradation and severe occlusion, increasing the difficulty of accurate image restoration. In contrast, multi-aperture camera-array imaging captures spatially distributed views with sampling offsets forming a stable disk-like distribution, which enhances the non-redundancy of observed data. Existing MISR algorithms fail to fully exploit these unique properties. Supervised MISR methods tend to overfit the degradation patterns in training data, and current self-supervised learning (SSL) techniques struggle to recover fine-grained details. To address these issues, this paper thoroughly investigates the strengths, limitations and applicability boundaries of multi-image-to-single-image (Multi-to-Single) and multi-image-to-multi-image (Multi-to-Multi) SSL methods. We propose the Multi-to-Single-Guided Multi-to-Multi SSL framework that combines the advantages of Multi-to-Single and Multi-to-Multi to generate visually appealing and high-fidelity images rich in texture details. The Multi-to-Single-Guided Multi-to-Multi SSL framework provides a new paradigm for integrating deep neural network with classical physics-based variational methods. To enhance the ability of MISR network to recover high-frequency details from aliased artifacts, this paper proposes a novel camera-array SR network called dual Transformer suitable for SSL. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.
TinyNina: A Resource-Efficient Edge-AI Framework for Sustainable Air Quality Monitoring via Intra-Image Satellite Super-Resolution
Nitrogen dioxide (NO) is a primary atmospheric pollutant and a significant contributor to respiratory morbidity and urban climate-related challenges. While satellite platforms like Sentinel-2 provide global coverage, their native spatial resolution often limits the precision required, fine-grained NO assessment. To address this, we propose TinyNina, a resource-efficient Edge-AI framework specifically engineered for sustainable environmental monitoring. TinyNina implements a novel intra-image learning paradigm that leverages the multi-spectral hierarchy of Sentinel-2 as internal training labels, effectively eliminating the dependency on costly and often unavailable external high-resolution reference datasets. The framework incorporates wavelength-specific attention gates and depthwise separable convolutions to preserve pollutant-sensitive spectral features while maintaining an ultra-lightweight footprint of only 51K parameters. Experimental results, validated against 3,276 matched satellite-ground station pairs, demonstrate that TinyNina achieves a state-of-the-art Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 7.4 g/m. This performance represents a 95% reduction in computational overhead and 47 faster inference compared to high-capacity models such as EDSR and RCAN. By prioritizing task-specific utility and architectural efficiency, TinyNina provides a scalable, low-latency solution for real-time air quality monitoring in smart city infrastructures.
Single-Subject Multi-View MRI Super-Resolution via Implicit Neural Representations
Clinical MRI frequently acquires anisotropic volumes with high in-plane resolution and low through-plane resolution to reduce acquisition time. Multiple orientations are therefore acquired to provide complementary anatomical information. Conventional integration of these views relies on registration followed by interpolation, which can degrade fine structural details. Recent deep learning-based super-resolution (SR) approaches have demonstrated strong performance in enhancing single-view images. However, their clinical reliability is often limited by the need for large-scale training datasets, resulting in increased dependence on cohort-level priors. Self-supervised strategies offer an alternative by learning directly from the target scans. Prior work either neglects the existence of multi-view information or assumes that in-plane information can supervise through-plane reconstruction under the assumption of pre-alignment between images. However, this assumption is rarely satisfied in clinical settings. In this work, we introduce Single-Subject Implicit Multi-View Super-Resolution for MRI (SIMS-MRI), a framework that operates solely on anisotropic multi-view scans from a single patient without requiring pre- or post-processing. Our method combines a multi-resolution hash-encoded implicit representation with learned inter-view alignment to generate a spatially consistent isotropic reconstruction. We validate the SIMS-MRI pipeline on both simulated brain and clinical prostate MRI datasets. Code will be made publicly available for reproducibility: https://github.com/abhshkt/SIMS-MRI
Toward Real-world Infrared Image Super-Resolution: A Unified Autoregressive Framework and Benchmark Dataset
Infrared image super-resolution (IISR) under real-world conditions is a practically significant yet rarely addressed task. Pioneering works are often trained and evaluated on simulated datasets or neglect the intrinsic differences between infrared and visible imaging. In practice, however, real infrared images are affected by coupled optical and sensing degradations that jointly deteriorate both structural sharpness and thermal fidelity. To address these challenges, we propose Real-IISR, a unified autoregressive framework for real-world IISR that progressively reconstructs fine-grained thermal structures and clear backgrounds in a scale-by-scale manner via thermal-structural guided visual autoregression. Specifically, a Thermal-Structural Guidance module encodes thermal priors to mitigate the mismatch between thermal radiation and structural edges. Since non-uniform degradations typically induce quantization bias, Real-IISR adopts a Condition-Adaptive Codebook that dynamically modulates discrete representations based on degradation-aware thermal priors. Also, a Thermal Order Consistency Loss enforces a monotonic relation between temperature and pixel intensity, ensuring relative brightness order rather than absolute values to maintain physical consistency under spatial misalignment and thermal drift. We build FLIR-IISR, a real-world IISR dataset with paired LR-HR infrared images acquired via automated focus variation and motion-induced blur. Extensive experiments demonstrate the promising performance of Real-IISR, providing a unified foundation for real-world IISR and benchmarking. The dataset and code are available at: https://github.com/JZD151/Real-IISR.
AlignVAR: Towards Globally Consistent Visual Autoregression for Image Super-Resolution
Visual autoregressive (VAR) models have recently emerged as a promising alternative for image generation, offering stable training, non-iterative inference, and high-fidelity synthesis through next-scale prediction. This encourages the exploration of VAR for image super-resolution (ISR), yet its application remains underexplored and faces two critical challenges: locality-biased attention, which fragments spatial structures, and residual-only supervision, which accumulates errors across scales, severely compromises global consistency of reconstructed images. To address these issues, we propose AlignVAR, a globally consistent visual autoregressive framework tailored for ISR, featuring two key components: (1) Spatial Consistency Autoregression (SCA), which applies an adaptive mask to reweight attention toward structurally correlated regions, thereby mitigating excessive locality and enhancing long-range dependencies; and (2) Hierarchical Consistency Constraint (HCC), which augments residual learning with full reconstruction supervision at each scale, exposing accumulated deviations early and stabilizing the coarse-to-fine refinement process. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AlignVAR consistently enhances structural coherence and perceptual fidelity over existing generative methods, while delivering over 10x faster inference with nearly 50% fewer parameters than leading diffusion-based approaches, establishing a new paradigm for efficient ISR.
