CNN-ViT Fusion with Adaptive Attention Gate for Brain Tumor MRI Classification: A Hybrid Deep Learning Model

Early detection and classifying brain tumors using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images is highly important but difficult to extract in medical images. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are good at capturing both local texture and spatial information whereas Vision Transformers (ViTs) are good at capturing long-range global dependencies. We propose a new hybrid architecture that combines a SqueezeNet-style CNN branch with a MobileViT-style global transformer branch, through an Adaptive Attention Gate mechanism, in this paper. The gate learns dynamically per-sample, per-feature weights to weight the contribution of each branch, allowing context-sensitive merging of local and global representations. The proposed model has a test accuracy of 97.60, a precision of 97.30, a recall of 97.50, an F1-score of 97.40, and a macro-average area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9946 with a trained and evaluated on the Brain Tumor MRI Dataset (Kaggle). These scores are higher than single CNN and ViT baselines, and current competitive fusion methods, showing that dynamic feature weighting is an effective way to classify medical images.

Uni-Encoder Meets Multi-Encoders: Representation Before Fusion for Brain Tumor Segmentation with Missing Modalities

Multimodal MRI offers complementary information for brain tumor segmentation, but clinical scans often lack one or more modalities, which degrades segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose UniME (Uni-Encoder Meets Multi-Encoders), a two-stage heterogeneous method for brain tumor segmentation with missing modalities that reconciles the trade-offs among fine-grained structure capture, cross-modal complementarity modeling, and exploitation of available modalities. The idea is to decouple representation learning from segmentation via a two-stage heterogeneous architecture. Stage 1 pretrains a single ViT Uni-Encoder with masked image modeling to establish a unified representation robust to missing modalities. Stage 2 adds modality-specific CNN Multi-Encoders to extract high-resolution, multi-scale, fine-grained features. We fuse these features with the global representation to produce precise segmentations. Experiments on BraTS 2023 and BraTS 2024 show that UniME outperforms previous methods under incomplete multi-modal scenarios. The code is available at https://github.com/Hooorace-S/UniME

Robust Cross-Domain WiFi Fall Detection via Physics-Driven Attention-Enhanced Transformers

Device-free fall detection utilizing WiFi Channel State Information (CSI) has emerged as a promising, privacy-preserving solution for elderly health monitoring in the Internet of Things (IoT) era. However, existing deep learning approaches suffer from severe performance degradation when deployed in unseen environments due to static background overfitting and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) signal attenuation. To address these critical bottlenecks, we propose a robust, domain-generalizable framework featuring a novel Attention-Enhanced CNN-Transformer hybrid architecture. First, we design a physics-driven \textbf{Dynamic Variance Gate (DVG)} to dynamically calculate local temporal variance, acting as a soft-attention mask that eliminates static environmental DC components while amplifying dynamic human motion. Second, we introduce a Physics-Aware Data Augmentation strategy to force the network to learn invariant morphological signatures rather than environment-specific noise. Furthermore, a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is integrated to refine spatiotemporal features prior to Transformer-based sequence modeling. Extensive cross-domain evaluations across four distinct indoor environments demonstrate that our method achieves 97.6% accuracy in NLoS scenarios and 98.8% in completely unseen environments without target-domain fine-tuning. Finally, we deploy the proposed framework on an edge computing system equipped with commercial WiFi NICs. Real-world live inference field tests confirm the system's robustness against unseen environmental layouts and its capability for continuous, low-latency whole-home safety monitoring.

ConvVitMamba: Efficient Multiscale Convolution, Transformer, and Mamba-Based Sequence modelling for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification remains challenging due to high spectral dimensionality, redundancy, and limited labeled data. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) achieve strong performance by exploiting spectral-spatial information and long-range dependencies, they often incur high computational cost and large model size, limiting practical use. To address these limitations, a unified hybrid framework, termed ConvVitMamba, is proposed for efficient HSI classification. The architecture integrates three components: a multiscale convolutional feature extractor to capture local spectral, spatial, and joint patterns; a Vision Transformer based tokenization and encoding stage to model global contextual relationships; and a lightweight Mamba inspired gated sequence mixing module for efficient content-aware refinement without quadratic self-attention. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used as preprocessing to reduce redundancy and improve efficiency. Experiments on four benchmark datasets, including Houston and three UAV borne QUH datasets (Pingan, Qingyun, and Tangdaowan), demonstrate that ConvVitMamba consistently outperforms CNN, Transformer, and Mamba based methods while maintaining a favorable balance between accuracy, model size, and inference efficiency. Ablation studies confirm the complementary contributions of all components. The results indicate that the proposed framework provides an effective and efficient solution for HSI classification in diverse scenarios. The CTLNet for Shanghai Composite Index Prediction

Shanghai Composite Index prediction has become a hot issue for many investors and academic researchers. Deep learning models are widely applied in multivariate time series forecasting, including recurrent neural networks (RNN), convolutional neural networks (CNN), and transformers. Specifically, the Transformer encoder, with its unique attention mechanism and parallel processing capabilities, has become an important tool in time series prediction, and has an advantage in dealing with long sequence dependencies and multivariate data correlations. Drawing on the strengths of various models, we propose the CNN-Transformer-LSTM Networks (CTLNet). This paper explores the application of CTLNet for Shanghai Composite Index prediction and the comparative experiments show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

Attention-Gated Convolutional Networks for Scanner-Agnostic Quality Assessment

Motion artifacts present a significant challenge in structural MRI (sMRI), often compromising clinical diagnostics and large-scale automated analysis. While manual quality control (QC) remains the gold standard, it is increasingly unscalable for massive longitudinal studies. To address this, we propose a hybrid CNN-Attention framework designed for robust, site-invariant MRI quality assessment. Our architecture integrates a hierarchical 2D CNN encoder for local spatial feature extraction with a multi-head cross-attention mechanism to model global dependencies. This synergy enables the model to prioritize motion relevant artifact signatures, such as ringing and blurring, while dynamically filtering out site-specific intensity variations and background noise. The framework was trained end-to-end on the MR-ART dataset using a balanced cohort of 200 subjects. Performance was evaluated across two tiers: Seen Site Evaluation on a held-out MR-ART partition and Unseen Site Evaluation using 200 subjects from 17 heterogeneous sites in the ABIDE archive. On seen sites, the model achieved a scan-level accuracy of 0.9920 and an F1-score of 0.9919. Crucially, it maintained strong generalization across unseen ABIDE sites (Acc = 0.755) without any retraining or fine-tuning, demonstrating high resilience to domain shift. These results indicate that attention-based feature re-weighting successfully captures universal artifact descriptors, bridging the performance gap between diverse imaging environments and scanner manufacturers.

Categorize Early, Integrate Late: Divergent Processing Strategies in Automatic Speech Recognition

In speech language modeling, two architectures dominate the frontier: the Transformer and the Conformer. However, it remains unknown whether their comparable performance stems from convergent processing strategies or distinct architectural inductive biases. We introduce Architectural Fingerprinting, a probing framework that isolates the effect of architecture on representation, and apply it to a controlled suite of 24 pre-trained encoders (39M-3.3B parameters). Our analysis reveals divergent hierarchies: Conformers implement a "Categorize Early" strategy, resolving phoneme categories 29% earlier in depth and speaker gender by 16% depth. In contrast, Transformers "Integrate Late," deferring phoneme, accent, and duration encoding to deep layers (49-57%). These fingerprints suggest design heuristics: Conformers' front-loaded categorization may benefit low-latency streaming, while Transformers' deep integration may favor tasks requiring rich context and cross-utterance normalization.

DuaDeep-SeqAffinity: Dual-Branch Deep Learning for Tri-Stream Sequence-Based Antibody--Antigen Affinity Prediction

DuaDeep-SeqAffinity is a sequence-only deep learning framework that predicts antibody--antigen binding affinity directly from primary amino acid sequences, avoiding the cost and scarcity of resolved three-dimensional structures. The antigen and the antibody heavy and light chains are processed as three independent streams, each embedded with a frozen ESM-2 protein language model and passed through parallel Transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) branches before late fusion, a decoupled design intended to preserve local complementarity-determining region (CDR) signal that monolithic encoders can dilute. On a sequence-disjoint split of the AbRank benchmark, the model achieves a Pearson correlation of 0.683, an R^2 of 0.460, and a pairwise ranking AUC of 0.895, significantly outperforming single-branch ablations (paired t-test, p < 0.05). Attention-map and gradient-based saliency analyses further show that the model preferentially attends to CDR loops and candidate epitope residues, supporting its use as a scalable, structure-free tool for high-throughput antibody screening.

Unifying Convolution and Attention via Convolutional Nearest Neighbors

Convolutional Neural Networks and Vision Transformers are the two dominant architectural families in computer vision, defined by spatially local convolution and global self-attention respectively. Despite their apparent differences, we show that both operations are special cases of a single kk-nearest neighbor aggregation framework: convolution selects neighbors by spatial proximity while attention selects by feature similarity, placing them at two ends of a shared operational spectrum. We introduce Convolutional Nearest Neighbors (ConvNN), a unified framework that exactly recovers standard and depthwise convolution, self-attention, and sparse attention variants including KVT-attention as special cases, and exposes the design space of neighbor-selection strategies between them through configurable similarity functions, positional encodings, and aggregation kernels. We validate ConvNN on ImageNet-1K classification across two complementary architectures: a hybrid branching layer in ResNet-50 that combines local and global feature learning, improving top-1 accuracy by 3.0% over the ResNet-50 baseline, and ConvNN-attention in ViT-Base that achieves 81.64% top-1 accuracy, surpassing standard multi-head self-attention by 0.7%. Together, these results demonstrate that ConvNN provides a principled foundation for designing operations that bridge convolutional and attention-based computation.

Johnson-Lindenstrauss Lemma Guided Network for Efficient 3D Medical Segmentation

Lightweight 3D medical image segmentation remains constrained by a fundamental \textit{efficiency / robustness conflict''}, particularly when processing complex anatomical structures and heterogeneous modalities. In this paper, we study how to redesign the framework based on the characteristics of high-dimensional 3D images, and explore data synergy to overcome the fragile representation of lightweight methods. Our approach, VeloxSeg, begins with a deployable and extensible dual-stream CNN-Transformer architecture composed of Paired Window Attention (PWA) and Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma-guided convolution (JLC). For each 3D image, we invoke a glance-and-focus'' principle, where PWA rapidly retrieves multi-scale information, and JLC ensures robust local feature extraction with minimal parameters, significantly enhancing the model's ability to operate with low computational budget. Followed by an extension of the dual-stream architecture that incorporates modal interaction into the multi-scale image-retrieval process, VeloxSeg efficiently models heterogeneous modalities. Finally, Spatially Decoupled Knowledge Transfer (SDKT) via Gram matrices injects the texture prior extracted by a self-supervised network into the segmentation network, yielding stronger representations than baselines at no extra inference cost. Experimental results on multimodal benchmarks show that VeloxSeg achieves a 26% Dice improvement, alongside increasing GPU throughput by 11×\times, CPU by 48×\times, and reducing training peak GPU memory usage by 1/201/20, inference by 1/241/24. HyDRA: A Hybrid Dual-Mode Network for Closed- and Open-Set RFFI with Optimized VMD

Device recognition is vital for security in wireless communication systems, particularly for applications like access control. Radio Frequency Fingerprint Identification (RFFI) offers a non-cryptographic solution by exploiting hardware-induced signal distortions. This paper proposes HyDRA, a Hybrid Dual-mode RF Architecture that integrates an optimized Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) with a novel architecture based on the fusion of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Transformers, and Mamba components, designed to support both closed-set and open-set classification tasks. The optimized VMD enhances preprocessing efficiency and classification accuracy by fixing center frequencies and using closed-form solutions. HyDRA employs the Transformer Dynamic Sequence Encoder (TDSE) for global dependency modeling and the Mamba Linear Flow Encoder (MLFE) for linear-complexity processing, adapting to varying conditions. Evaluation on public datasets demonstrates state-of-the-art (SOTA) accuracy in closed-set scenarios and robust performance in our proposed open-set classification method, effectively identifying unauthorized devices. Deployed on NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX, HyDRA achieves millisecond-level inference speed with low power consumption, providing a practical solution for real-time wireless authentication in real-world environments. Cascaded Multi-Scale Attention for Enhanced Multi-Scale Feature Extraction and Interaction with Low-Resolution Images

In real-world applications of image recognition tasks, such as human pose estimation, cameras often capture objects, like human bodies, at low resolutions. This scenario poses a challenge in extracting and leveraging multi-scale features, which is often essential for precise inference. To address this challenge, we propose a new attention mechanism, named cascaded multi-scale attention (CMSA), tailored for use in CNN-ViT hybrid architectures, to handle low-resolution inputs effectively. The design of CMSA enables the extraction and seamless integration of features across various scales without necessitating the downsampling of the input image or feature maps. This is achieved through a novel combination of grouped multi-head self-attention mechanisms with window-based local attention and cascaded fusion of multi-scale features over different scales. This architecture allows for the effective handling of features across different scales, enhancing the model's ability to perform tasks such as human pose estimation, head pose estimation, and more with low-resolution images. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in these areas with fewer parameters, showcasing its potential for broad application in real-world scenarios where capturing high-resolution images is not feasible. Code is available at https://github.com/xyongLu/CMSA.

Explainable Convolutional Neural Networks for Retinal Fundus Classification and Cutting-Edge Segmentation Models for Retinal Blood Vessels from Fundus Images

Early detection of vision-threatening conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration depends on retinal fundus image analysis, but manual assessment is slow and expert-dependent. Automated convolutional neural networks classify fundus images accurately yet act as black boxes, and existing retinal vessel segmentation methods lose discriminative power under pathology and seldom exploit attention or transformer backbones. Using the FIVES and DRIVE fundus datasets, we develop a two-pipeline framework that pairs four-class disease classification with attention- and transformer-based vessel segmentation, organised in three stages: (1) FIVES images are augmented by rotation and horizontal and vertical flips and used to fine-tune eight ImageNet-pretrained CNNs: ResNet101, DenseNet169, Xception, InceptionV3, DenseNet121, InceptionResNetV2, ResNet50, and EfficientNetB0. (2) Five gradient-based explanation methods, Grad-CAM, Grad-CAM++, Score-CAM, Faster Score-CAM, and Layer-CAM, are computed on the final convolutional block of each classifier and compared qualitatively across architectures. (3) Ten U-Net variants are benchmarked for vessel segmentation: TransUNet (hybrid CNN--Transformer encoder) and Attention U-Net (gated skip connections), evaluated with ResNet50V2, ResNet101V2, and ResNet152V2 backbones, along with additional Attention U-Net configurations using DenseNet backbones, and the fully transformer-based Swin-UNet. ResNet101 gives the highest classification accuracy: 94.17% (F1 0.942) >> 88.33% for EfficientNetB0. For segmentation, the architecture ranking is consistent on both datasets: Attention U-Net >> TransUNet >> Swin-UNet. The strongest configuration is Attention U-Net with a ResNet101V2 backbone: FIVES IoU 0.722, Dice 0.838; DRIVE IoU 0.648, Dice 0.787, lifting DRIVE IoU 60.80 →\rightarrow 64.83 over a prior custom U-Net.

MCSeg: Pre-training and Fine-tuning Volumetric Pyramid Transformer for Multi-modal Cardiac Image Segmentation

Automatic cardiac image segmentation is pivotal for diagnosing and treating cardiac diseases. In this work, we introduce MCSeg, a volumetric transformer-based network tailored for multi-modal cardiac segmentation. To overcome the architectural mismatch inherent in existing hybrid networks, we propose a novel Scaling Feature Pyramid (SFP). Unlike conventional skip connections, the SFP effectively bridges the single-scale 3D Vision Transformer (ViT) encoder and the multi-scale CNN decoder by transforming the ViT's output into a hierarchical feature pyramid, ensuring that global contextual information is effectively leveraged. For the training paradigm, the ViT encoder first undergoes self-supervised pre-training via masked image modeling. Subsequently, the network is fine-tuned on downstream tasks, during which a regional mutual information (RMI) loss is integrated to improve boundary segmentation accuracy. In experiments, MCSeg consistently outperforms eleven SOTA methods on CT dataset ImageCHD, multi-modal dataset MM-WHS, MRI dataset HVSMR-2.0 and MSD Heart, highlighting the effectiveness of our MCSeg for multi-modal cardiac segmentation tasks. Furthermore, MCSeg's superior performance in few-shot experiment showcases its significant potential in adapting to limited data scenarios. FreeTransformSR: Efficient Lightweight Image Super-Resolution via Free Low-Rank Learnable Transform

Single image super-resolution aims to reconstruct high-resolution images from low-resolution inputs. This paper proposes FreeTransformSR, a novel lightweight super-resolution network based on a channel-wise free low-rank learnable transform. The transform learns task-adaptive basis functions in a data-driven manner, enabling adaptive feature modulation with minimal parameter overhead. To further enhance high-frequency detail recovery, we introduce a local feature modulation branch that complements transform-domain processing with depthwise convolution. In addition, a soft complexity adaptive module dynamically fuses the outputs of local convolution and window self-attention branches through a lightweight gating network, adaptively adjusting the fusion ratio based on regional texture characteristics. An adaptive intensity modulation strategy is also incorporated to adjust transform-domain response strength at the sample level, enabling the network to dynamically adjust processing intensity according to input features. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that FreeTransformSR achieves competitive PSNR/SSIM performance with significantly fewer parameters and FLOPs. Specifically, FreeTransformSR achieves 32.41 dB on BSD100 x2 and 27.00 dB on Urban100 x4 with only 595K parameters, while delivering faster inference speed than competing methods, making it well-suited for deployment in resource-constrained scenarios.
