Indoor Scene Reconstruction

Overview

Indoor scene reconstruction studies how to turn images, video, depth, and sensor scans into coherent 3D models of rooms, objects, and their spatial relationships. Methods range from SLAM, neural implicit surfaces, and 3D Gaussian Splatting to structured scene programs and generative models that complete missing geometry; multi-view panoramas and semantic cues help recover larger spaces. Accurate, editable reconstructions support digital twins, architectural analysis, and embodied robots that need to navigate or manipulate objects. A central challenge is balancing plausible completion with fidelity to observed evidence, especially when views are sparse, rooms are cluttered, or scale and viewpoint coverage are uncertain.

RoomRecon: High-Quality Textured Room Layout Reconstruction on Mobile Devices

Widespread RGB-Depth (RGB-D) sensors and advanced 3D reconstruction technologies facilitate the capture of indoor spaces, improving the fields of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and extended reality (XR). Nevertheless, current technologies still face limitations, such as the inability to reflect minor scene changes without a complete recapture, the lack of semantic scene understanding, and various texturing challenges that affect the 3D model's visual quality. These issues affect the realism required for VR experiences and other applications such as in interior design and real estate. To address these challenges, we introduce RoomRecon, an interactive, real-time scanning and texturing pipeline for 3D room models. We propose a two-phase texturing pipeline that integrates AR-guided image capturing for texturing and generative AI models to improve texturing quality and provide better replicas of indoor spaces. Moreover, we suggest focusing only on permanent room elements such as walls, floors, and ceilings, to allow for easily customizable 3D models. We conduct experiments in a variety of indoor spaces to assess the texturing quality and speed of our method. The quantitative results and user study demonstrate that RoomRecon surpasses state-of-the-art methods in terms of texturing quality and on-device computation time.

Incremental Semantics-Aided Meshing from LiDAR-Inertial Odometry and RGB Direct Label Transfer

Geometric high-fidelity mesh reconstruction from LiDAR-inertial scans remains challenging in large, complex indoor environments -- such as cultural buildings -- where point cloud sparsity, geometric drift, and fixed fusion parameters produce holes, over-smoothing, and spurious surfaces at structural boundaries. We propose a modular, incremental RGB+LiDAR pipeline that generates incremental semantics-aided high-quality meshes from indoor scans through scan frame-based direct label transfer. A vision foundation model labels each incoming RGB frame; labels are incrementally projected and fused onto a LiDAR-inertial odometry map; and an incremental semantics-aware Truncated Signed Distance Function (TSDF) fusion step produces the final mesh via marching cubes. This frame-level fusion strategy preserves the geometric fidelity of LiDAR while leveraging rich visual semantics to resolve geometric ambiguities at reconstruction boundaries caused by LiDAR point-cloud sparsity and geometric drift. We demonstrate that semantic guidance improves geometric reconstruction quality; quantitative evaluation is therefore performed using geometric metrics on the Oxford Spires dataset, while results from the NTU VIRAL dataset are analyzed qualitatively. The proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art geometric baselines ImMesh and Voxblox, demonstrating the benefit of semantics-aided fusion for geometric mesh quality. The resulting semantically labelled meshes are of value when reconstructing Universal Scene Description (USD) assets, offering a path from indoor LiDAR scanning to XR and digital modeling.

FunRec: Reconstructing Functional 3D Scenes from Egocentric Interaction Videos

We present FunRec, a method for reconstructing functional 3D digital twins of indoor scenes directly from egocentric RGB-D interaction videos. Unlike existing methods on articulated reconstruction, which rely on controlled setups, multi-state captures, or CAD priors, FunRec operates directly on in-the-wild human interaction sequences to recover interactable 3D scenes. It automatically discovers articulated parts, estimates their kinematic parameters, tracks their 3D motion, and reconstructs static and moving geometry in canonical space, yielding simulation-compatible meshes. Across new real and simulated benchmarks, FunRec surpasses prior work by a large margin, achieving up to +50 mIoU improvement in part segmentation, 5-10 times lower articulation and pose errors, and significantly higher reconstruction accuracy. We further demonstrate applications on URDF/USD export for simulation, hand-guided affordance mapping and robot-scene interaction.

SGS-Intrinsic: Semantic-Invariant Gaussian Splatting for Sparse-View Indoor Inverse Rendering

We present SGS-Intrinsic, an indoor inverse rendering framework that works well for sparse-view images. Unlike existing 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) based methods that focus on object-centric reconstruction and fail to work under sparse view settings, our method allows to achieve high-quality geometry reconstruction and accurate disentanglement of material and illumination. The core idea is to construct a dense and geometry-consistent Gaussian semantic field guided by semantic and geometric priors, providing a reliable foundation for subsequent inverse rendering. Building upon this, we perform material-illumination disentanglement by combining a hybrid illumination model and material prior to effectively capture illumination-material interactions. To mitigate the impact of cast shadows and enhance the robustness of material recovery, we introduce illumination-invariant material constraint together with a deshadowing model. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show that our method consistently improves both reconstruction fidelity and inverse rendering quality over existing 3DGS-based inverse rendering approaches. KitchenTwin: Semantically and Geometrically Grounded 3D Kitchen Digital Twins

Embodied AI training and evaluation require object-centric digital twin environments with accurate metric geometry and semantic grounding. Recent transformer-based feedforward reconstruction methods can efficiently predict global point clouds from sparse monocular videos, yet these geometries suffer from inherent scale ambiguity and inconsistent coordinate conventions. This mismatch prevents the reliable fusion of these dimensionless point cloud predictions with locally reconstructed object meshes. We propose a novel scale-aware 3D fusion framework that registers visually grounded object meshes with transformer-predicted global point clouds to construct metrically consistent digital twins. Our method introduces a Vision-Language Model (VLM)-guided geometric anchor mechanism that resolves this fundamental coordinate mismatch by recovering an accurate real-world metric scale. To fuse these networks, we propose a geometry-aware registration pipeline that explicitly enforces physical plausibility through gravity-aligned vertical estimation, Manhattan-world structural constraints, and collision-free local refinement. Experiments on real indoor kitchen environments demonstrate improved cross-network object alignment and geometric consistency for downstream tasks, including multi-primitive fitting and metric measurement. We additionally introduce an open-source indoor digital twin dataset with metrically scaled scenes and semantically grounded and registered object-centric mesh annotations.

Training-Free Instance-Aware 3D Scene Reconstruction and Diffusion-Based View Synthesis from Sparse Images

We introduce a novel, training-free system for reconstructing, understanding, and rendering 3D indoor scenes from a sparse set of unposed RGB images. Unlike traditional radiance field approaches that require dense views and per-scene optimization, our pipeline achieves high-fidelity results without any training or pose preprocessing. The system integrates three key innovations: (1) A robust point cloud reconstruction module that filters unreliable geometry using a warping-based anomaly removal strategy; (2) A warping-guided 2D-to-3D instance lifting mechanism that propagates 2D segmentation masks into a consistent, instance-aware 3D representation; and (3) A novel rendering approach that projects the point cloud into new views and refines the renderings with a 3D-aware diffusion model. Our method leverages the generative power of diffusion to compensate for missing geometry and enhances realism, especially under sparse input conditions. We further demonstrate that object-level scene editing such as instance removal can be naturally supported in our pipeline by modifying only the point cloud, enabling the synthesis of consistent, edited views without retraining. Our results establish a new direction for efficient, editable 3D content generation without relying on scene-specific optimization. Project page: https://jiatongxia.github.io/TID3R/

PixARMesh: Autoregressive Mesh-Native Single-View Scene Reconstruction

We introduce PixARMesh, a method to autoregressively reconstruct complete 3D indoor scene meshes directly from a single RGB image. Unlike prior methods that rely on implicit signed distance fields and post-hoc layout optimization, PixARMesh jointly predicts object layout and geometry within a unified model, producing coherent and artist-ready meshes in a single forward pass. Building on recent advances in mesh generative models, we augment a point-cloud encoder with pixel-aligned image features and global scene context via cross-attention, enabling accurate spatial reasoning from a single image. Scenes are generated autoregressively from a unified token stream containing context, pose, and mesh, yielding compact meshes with high-fidelity geometry. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show that PixARMesh achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction quality while producing lightweight, high-quality meshes ready for downstream applications.

Leveraging Geometric Prior Uncertainty and Complementary Constraints for High-Fidelity Neural Indoor Surface Reconstruction

Neural implicit surface reconstruction with signed distance function has made significant progress, but recovering fine details such as thin structures and complex geometries remains challenging due to unreliable or noisy geometric priors. Existing approaches rely on implicit uncertainty that arises during optimization to filter these priors, which is indirect and inefficient, and masking supervision in high-uncertainty regions further leads to under-constrained optimization. To address these issues, we propose GPU-SDF, a neural implicit framework for indoor surface reconstruction that leverages geometric prior uncertainty and complementary constraints. We introduce a self-supervised module that explicitly estimates prior uncertainty without auxiliary networks. Based on this estimation, we design an uncertainty-guided loss that modulates prior influence rather than discarding it, thereby retaining weak but informative cues. To address regions with high prior uncertainty, GPU-SDF further incorporates two complementary constraints: an edge distance field that strengthens boundary supervision and a multi-view consistency regularization that enforces geometric coherence. Extensive experiments confirm that GPU-SDF improves the reconstruction of fine details and serves as a plug-and-play enhancement for existing frameworks. Have We Mastered Scale in Deep Monocular Visual SLAM? The ScaleMaster Dataset and Benchmark

Recent advances in deep monocular visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) have achieved impressive accuracy and dense reconstruction capabilities, yet their robustness to scale inconsistency in large-scale indoor environments remains largely unexplored. Existing benchmarks are limited to room-scale or structurally simple settings, leaving critical issues of intra-session scale drift and inter-session scale ambiguity insufficiently addressed. To fill this gap, we introduce the ScaleMaster Dataset, the first benchmark explicitly designed to evaluate scale consistency under challenging scenarios such as multi-floor structures, long trajectories, repetitive views, and low-texture regions. We systematically analyze the vulnerability of state-of-the-art deep monocular visual SLAM systems to scale inconsistency, providing both quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Crucially, our analysis extends beyond traditional trajectory metrics to include a direct map-to-map quality assessment using metrics like Chamfer distance against high-fidelity 3D ground truth. Our results reveal that while recent deep monocular visual SLAM systems demonstrate strong performance on existing benchmarks, they suffer from severe scale-related failures in realistic, large-scale indoor environments. By releasing the ScaleMaster dataset and baseline results, we aim to establish a foundation for future research toward developing scale-consistent and reliable visual SLAM systems.

PLANA3R: Zero-shot Metric Planar 3D Reconstruction via Feed-Forward Planar Splatting

This paper addresses metric 3D reconstruction of indoor scenes by exploiting their inherent geometric regularities with compact representations. Using planar 3D primitives - a well-suited representation for man-made environments - we introduce PLANA3R, a pose-free framework for metric Planar 3D Reconstruction from unposed two-view images. Our approach employs Vision Transformers to extract a set of sparse planar primitives, estimate relative camera poses, and supervise geometry learning via planar splatting, where gradients are propagated through high-resolution rendered depth and normal maps of primitives. Unlike prior feedforward methods that require 3D plane annotations during training, PLANA3R learns planar 3D structures without explicit plane supervision, enabling scalable training on large-scale stereo datasets using only depth and normal annotations. We validate PLANA3R on multiple indoor-scene datasets with metric supervision and demonstrate strong generalization to out-of-domain indoor environments across diverse tasks under metric evaluation protocols, including 3D surface reconstruction, depth estimation, and relative pose estimation. Furthermore, by formulating with planar 3D representation, our method emerges with the ability for accurate plane segmentation. The project page is available at https://lck666666.github.io/plana3r
