Overview

Optimal power flow determines how much power generators should produce while meeting demand and respecting limits on voltages, transmission lines, and other grid equipment. AC-OPF models the grid’s nonlinear physics, while simpler DC-OPF approximates it; both are commonly solved with mathematical optimization methods. Current research also uses graph neural networks, physics-informed surrogates, self-supervised learning, and foundation models to speed up solutions or transfer them across grid topologies, often using IEEE and PGLib-OPF test systems. A central challenge is that fast, accurate predictions may still violate operational constraints, especially under congestion or unfamiliar conditions, so feasibility, reliability, and solver compatibility matter alongside prediction error.
