Software Engineering
Overview
Software engineering studies how people design, build, test, deploy, and maintain software, with the goal of making systems reliable and useful as requirements change. Work spans requirements and architecture, code quality, testing and debugging, security, software evolution, and team practices, using approaches such as static analysis, model-based engineering, search-based testing, and empirical studies. Large language models and agents are increasingly used for coding, repair, testing, documentation, and repository understanding, with evaluations moving from isolated tasks toward repository-level and long-term maintenance benchmarks such as SWE-bench and continuous-integration tasks. A central challenge is turning success on bounded tasks into dependable software over time: integration, maintainability, security, and changing requirements remain difficult, making specifications, executable tests, human review, and transparent evaluation important.
