Abstract

Vision-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) frameworks aid human search tasks by detecting and recognizing specific individuals, then tracking and following them while maintaining a safe distance. A key safety requirement for UAV following is the accurate estimation of the distance between camera and target object under real-world conditions, achieved by fusing multiple image modalities. As part of the system for automatic people detection and face recognition using deep learning, in this paper we present the fusion of depth camera measurements and monocular camera-to-body distance estimation for robust tracking and following. Deep learning based filtering of depth camera data and estimation of camera-to-body distance from a monocular camera are achieved with YOLO-pose, enabling real-time fusion of depth information using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm. The proposed subsystem, designed for use in drones, estimates and measures the distance between the depth camera and the human body keypoints, to maintain the safe distance between the drone and the human target. Our system provides an accurate estimated distance, which has been validated against motion capture ground truth data. The system has been tested in real time indoors, where it reduces the average errors, RMSE and standard deviations of distance estimation up to 15,3% in three tested scenarios. Based on the test results, the EKF fusion-based approach increases the depth detection range by reducing the errors outside the optimal depth camera working range. It also shows improved robustness and precision in challenging conditions, such as reflections and poor visibility, making it suitable for SAR.

DAPM: UAV Monocular Depth Estimation from Any Height, Pitch, Roll and FOV

Monocular depth estimation is a fundamental prerequisite for 3D reconstruction and autonomous navigation in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In practical deployments, UAVs operate under highly dynamic camera poses characterized by continuous variations in height, pitch, roll, and field of view (FOV). Existing monocular depth estimation methods frequently fail to generalize across such diverse perspectives and the expansive scale of depth distributions inherent in aerial scenes. To address these challenges, we establish a quantitative representation of UAV viewing angles through rigorous theoretical analysis, deriving the geometric correspondence between viewing angles and view distances using the ground plane as a reference for observation. Building upon this, we propose Depth Estimation for Any Perspectives Model (DAPM), representing the first monocular framework specifically designed for UAV aerial imagery to jointly estimate camera pose and depth under continuously varying viewpoints. Specifically, we introduce an Ideal Ground Depth (IGD) module that leverages the derived geometric relationships between UAV perspectives and view distances to implement dense camera-pose supervision and enhance depth features. And we further develop a coarse-to-fine Progressive Quantization Bins (PQB) module. By incorporating progressive supervision and hierarchical quantization bins, the PQB module enables robust estimation in complex UAV aerial imagery. To evaluate the proposed framework, we present the UAV Any Perspectives Depth (UAPD) dataset, featuring comprehensive and continuous distributions of pose parameters. Experimental results on UAPD demonstrate that DAPM achieves state-of-the-art performance across both depth and camera-pose estimation metrics. Real-Time Branch-to-Tool Distance Estimation for Autonomous UAV Pruning: Benchmarking Five DEFOM-Stereo Variants from Simulation to Jetson Deployment

Autonomous tree pruning with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a safety-critical real-world task: the onboard perception system must estimate the metric distance from a cutting tool to thin tree branches in real time so that the UAV can approach, align, and actuate the pruner without collision. We address this problem by training five variants of DEFOM-Stereo - a recent foundation-model-based stereo matcher - on a task-specific synthetic dataset and deploying the checkpoints on an NVIDIA Jetson Orin Super 16 GB. The training corpus is built in Unreal Engine 5 with a simulated ZED Mini stereo camera capturing 5,520 stereo pairs across 115 tree instances from three viewpoints at 2m distance; dense EXR depth maps provide exact, spatially complete supervision for thin branches. On the synthetic test set, DEFOM-Stereo ViT-S achieves the best depth-domain accuracy (EPE 1.74 px, D1-all 5.81%, delta-1 95.90%, depth MAE 23.40 cm) but its Jetson inference speed of ~2.2 FPS (~450 ms per frame) remains too slow for responsive closed-loop tool control. A newly introduced balanced variant, DEFOM-PrunePlus (~21M backbone, ~3.3 FPS on Jetson), offers the best deployable accuracy-speed trade-off (EPE 5.87 px, depth MAE 64.26 cm, delta-1 87.59%): its frame rate is sufficient for real-time guidance and its depth accuracy supports safe branch approach planning at the 2m operating range. The lightweight DEFOM-PruneStereo (~6.9 FPS) and DEFOM-PruneNano (~8.5 FPS) run fast but sacrifice substantial accuracy (depth MAE > 57 cm), making estimates too unreliable for safe actuation. Zero-shot inference on real photographs confirms that full-capacity models preserve branch geometry, validating the sim-to-real transfer. We conclude that DEFOM-PrunePlus provides the most practical accuracy-latency balance for onboard distance estimation, while ViT-S serves as the reference for future hardware.

JustDepth: Real-Time Radar-Camera Depth Estimation with Single-Scan LiDAR Supervision

Accurate yet low-latency depth is essential for radar-camera perception in autonomous systems. Cameras provide rich appearance but lack metric scale, whereas automotive radar offers metric range but is sparse and noisy. Many pipelines are multi-stage or depend on auxiliary annotations, increasing latency and limiting portability. We introduce JustDepth, a single-stage radar-camera depth estimator trained only with radar, camera, and single-scan LiDAR. All radar returns are aggregated into a fixed-width 1D representation, decoupling runtime from point count. A Height Fusion Block fuses modalities, a lightweight GNN propagates depth globally, and a training-only confidence decoder stabilizes learning with zero test-time cost. We mitigate stripe artifacts via simple augmentations and quantify them using the Vertical-Horizontal Gradient Ratio (VHGR). On nuScenes, compared to recent state-of-the-art methods, JustDepth maintains accuracy while reducing inference time by 39.7x and stripe artifacts by 66% as measured by VHGR.
