In visual localization, Absolute Pose Regression (APR) enables real-time 6-DoF camera pose inference from single images, yet critically depends on fine-tuning data quality and coverage. While recent methods leverage 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) for novel view synthesis-based data augmentation, random sampling generates redundant views and noisy samples from poorly reconstructed regions. To mitigate this research gap, we propose PoseCompass, an intelligent pose selection pipeline for 3DGS-based APR. PoseCompass formulates synthetic pose selection and derives a value-based pose ranking mechanism to identify informative poses. The ranking integrates three dimensions: Localization Difficulty, favoring challenging regions; Coverage Novelty, exploring under-sampled areas; and Rendering Observability, filtering artifacts and noise. PoseCompass then generates trajectory-constrained candidates, selects the top-K ranked poses, and synthesizes views using 3DGS with lightweight diffusion-based alignment. Finally, the pose regressor is fine-tuned on mixed real and synthetic data. We evaluate PoseCompass on 7-Scenes, where it reduces adaptation time from 15.2 to 5.1 minutes, a 3x speedup, while cutting median pose errors by 53.8 percent and significantly outperforming random baselines.
Visual localization becomes extremely challenging in planetary-like terrains characterized by low texture, perceptual aliasing, harsh illumination, and sparse, weakly overlapping viewpoints induced by forward rover motion and unconstrained driving directions. Under these conditions, state-of-the-art image-to-image and image-to-map matching pipelines suffer significant performance degradation. In this work, we propose a visual relocalization method that departs from classical correspondence-based pipelines by directly estimating camera poses against a differentiable map representation built with 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Our key contribution is a geometry-aware training strategy that combines photometric and geometric losses, where the geometric supervision is provided for the first time by combining multi-view stereo (MVS) and LiDAR depths. We show that this joint optimization produces a 3DGS model that better fits the underlying scene geometry, leading to improved photometric and geometric consistency and more robust, accurate single-image 6-DoF pose estimation. Extensive experiments on data acquired in planetary-analog environments validate the effectiveness of our approach, showing substantial gains in relocalization accuracy under challenging conditions. We introduce SPFSplatV2, an efficient feed-forward framework for 3D Gaussian splatting from sparse multi-view images, requiring no ground-truth poses during training or inference. The framework employs a shared feature extraction backbone to jointly predict 3D Gaussian primitives and camera poses in a canonical space from unposed inputs. To enable efficient and accurate pose estimation, we introduce a masked attention mechanism for target-view pose prediction and a reprojection loss that enforces pixel-aligned Gaussian primitives, providing stronger geometric constraints. We further demonstrate the compatibility of our training framework with different reconstruction architectures, resulting in two model variants. Remarkably, despite the absence of pose supervision, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both in-domain and out-of-domain novel view synthesis, even under extreme viewpoint changes and limited image overlap. It also surpasses many methods that rely on geometric supervision in relative pose estimation. By eliminating dependence on ground-truth poses, our method offers the scalability to leverage larger and more diverse datasets. Code and pretrained models will be available on our project page: https://ranrhuang.github.io/spfsplatv2/.
Per-scene 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) enables high-fidelity rendering, but practical robotic and AR scene capture pipelines often depend on external geometric initialization (e.g., SfM point clouds or depth estimates), which can be slow and brittle in on-site deployment. We present ACEsplat, a fast per-scene optimization framework that reconstructs 3D Gaussian representations from RGB images and camera poses only, without requiring external 3D priors (e.g., precomputed SfM models or supervised depth maps). ACEsplat uses a two-stage pipeline: (1) a self-supervised scene coordinate regression (SCR) module builds an internal geometry prior within 4--5 minutes; (2) SCR features and coordinate priors are fused by a lightweight Gaussian initialization head, followed by per-scene 3DGS optimization. On static-view rendering, ACEsplat achieves 29.11 dB PSNR on Wayspots with real-time SLAM poses and 33.20 dB on Cambridge Landmarks with SfM-refined poses. On RealEstate10K sparse-view novel view synthesis, it achieves competitive image fidelity under a challenging 2-view setting. ACEsplat completes scene-specific SCR mapping and 3DGS reconstruction within 15--25 minutes on a single GPU, making it a practical RGB+pose-only solution for rapid scene setup in robotics and mixed-reality applications.
