Abstract

Conventional wireless networks rely on instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and react to channel variations without explicitly modeling the physical environment, limiting their ability to handle blockage, mobility, and interference in dynamic deployments. Paradigms such as Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) add sensing capabilities but lack explicit environment modeling and decision-making. In this article, we propose Physical-AI: a new architecture for environment-aware wireless networking, where radio signals enable sensing, modeling, and interaction with the environment in addition to data transmission. The framework proposes a self-supervised spatiotemporal radio foundation model for transforming distributed radio observations into a shared latent environmental representation. Multiple inference heads operate on this representation to estimate key environmental properties, including blockage, user distribution, mobility dynamics, and interference structure. A task-specific neural decision layer maps this representation to proactive, context-aware control actions. By integrating perception, world modeling, and decision-making in a closed loop, the proposed framework goes beyond ISAC and establishes Physical-AI as a promising architecture for intelligent 6G systems. Simulation results show that the proposed predictive framework reduces outage probability and blockage-response latency, particularly under increasing beam-switching delays.

Empowering Embodied AI in 6G Networks: Architecture, Enablers, and Open Challenges

Embodied artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key driver of the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks by enabling agents that continuously perceive, communicate, and act in dynamic physical environments. Unlike conventional AI systems that process disembodied data, embodied agents such as robots, autonomous vehicles, and extended reality (XR) devices operate through closed-loop perception-communication-action (PCA) interactions, where communication performance directly affects physical behavior, control stability, and task success. However, existing AI-native wireless architectures remain largely connectivity-centric and are not designed to support task-driven embodied intelligence at large scale. Therefore, we present a holistic framework for embodied AI-native 6G systems, in which communication, sensing, computation, and control are jointly designed as a unified closed-loop infrastructure. We introduce a system-level PCA architecture, discuss key enabling technologies and representative applications, and highlight major open challenges in multimodal intelligence, edge-aware deployment, evaluation, trustworthiness, and practical implementation. Our central argument is that future 6G systems must evolve from intelligent communication platforms into active enablers of embodied physical intelligence.

Goal-Oriented Communications for Physical AI: Design and Testbed

Physical AI relies on frequently-updated, latency-sensitive video stream to perceive, reason, and interact with the physical world, resulting in strict latency requirements with much higher data volumes that existing 5G networks cannot support. Goal-oriented communication (GoC) offers as a promising approach to solve this challenge by transmitting only task-relevant semantic representations. However, existing GoC frameworks were mainly evaluated in the simulations while their effectiveness has never been validated in a practical deployment of physical AI application. In this work, we develop an end-to-end GoC testbed for Physical AI, which connects a PiPER robot arm equipped with an RGB-D camera and a 5G modem to an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin edge server through a 5G OpenAirInterface network. We propose and implement three GoC frameworks that transmit 3D bounding boxes, 2D scene graphs, and 3D scene graphs, as three types of semantic representations, respectively. They share the common functional modules designed for closed-loop Physical AI applications, including semantic extraction, full stack 5G transmission, language model inference, digital twin validation, and robotic control. Extensive experiments on our testbed show that our GoC frameworks reduce the task completion time by up to 52.6% and improve task success probability by up to 45%, compared to the traditional framework that periodically transmits the raw image data. These results validate the practical effectiveness of our GoC framework and pave the way for efficient and reliable Physical AI applications over future 6G networks. Agentic AI for ISAC: Analysis, Framework, and Case Study

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has emerged as a key development direction in the sixth-generation (6G) era, which provides essential support for the collaborative sensing and communication of future intelligent networks. However, as wireless environments become increasingly dynamic and complex, ISAC systems require more intelligent processing and more autonomous operation to maintain efficiency and adaptability. Meanwhile, agentic artificial intelligence (AI) offers a feasible solution to address these challenges by enabling continuous perception-reasoning-action loops in dynamic environments to support intelligent, autonomous, and efficient operation for ISAC systems. As such, we delve into the application value and prospects of agentic AI in ISAC systems in this work. Firstly, we provide a comprehensive review of agentic AI and ISAC systems to demonstrate their key characteristics. Secondly, we show several common optimization approaches for ISAC systems and highlight the significant advantages of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)-based agentic AI. Thirdly, we propose a novel agentic ISAC framework and prensent a case study to verify its superiority in optimizing ISAC performance. Finally, we clarify future research directions for agentic AI-based ISAC systems.
