Abstract

Recent advances in 4D radar enable robust perception in adverse weather; however, the inherent sparsity, noise, and limited positional precision of radar point clouds pose significant challenges for registration-based odometry. In this letter, we propose RaDiVe, a 4D radar odometry framework designed to improve the accuracy and robustness of radar point-cloud registration. We introduce a distance-bounded Normal Distributions Transform (NDT), which improves optimization stability and computational efficiency by restricting the correspondence search to near-distance voxel pairs. To mitigate measurement ambiguity, we propose a velocity-discrepancy point uncertainty model that weights each input 4D radar point according to the discrepancy between its measured Doppler radial velocity and the radial velocity predicted from the estimated ego-velocity. Furthermore, we incorporate Signed Distance Function (SDF)-based surface point extraction via implicit neural mapping to construct a geometrically consistent and noise-filtered local submap. Evaluations across multiple public datasets demonstrate that RaDiVe outperforms existing 4D radar odometry baselines by 44.4% in translational Absolute Trajectory Error (ATE) and 21.3% in rotational ATE on average, while maintaining real-time performance. The source code will be made publicly available to the robotics community: https://github.com/to-be-open-sourced.

Registering the 4D Millimeter Wave Radar Point Clouds Via Generalized Method of Moments

4D millimeter wave radars (4D radars) are new emerging sensors that provide point clouds of objects with both position and radial velocity measurements. Compared to LiDARs, they are more affordable and reliable sensors for robots' perception under extreme weather conditions. On the other hand, point cloud registration is an essential perception module that provides robot's pose feedback information in applications such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Nevertheless, the 4D radar point clouds are sparse and noisy compared to those of LiDAR, and hence we shall confront great challenges in registering the radar point clouds. To address this issue, we propose a point cloud registration framework for 4D radars based on Generalized Method of Moments. The method does not require explicit point-to-point correspondences between the source and target point clouds, which is difficult to compute for sparse 4D radar point clouds. Moreover, we show the consistency of the proposed method. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that our approach achieves higher accuracy and robustness than benchmarks, and the accuracy is even comparable to LiDAR-based frameworks.

RAMBA: 4D Radar Mapping by Bundle Adjustment

4D radar is increasingly attractive for robotic mapping because it provides range, azimuth, elevation, and Doppler measurements while remaining robust in adverse visibility conditions. Although recent radar and radar--inertial odometry methods have achieved promising online state estimation performance, offline global map refinement for 4D radar remains underexplored. This paper presents RAMBA, a radar bundle-adjustment framework for globally consistent 4D radar mapping. Given initial poses and radar frames from a radar--inertial odometry front-end, RAMBA jointly refines radar frame states using covariance-weighted geometric residuals, IMU preintegration factors, and radar ego-velocity constraints. The geometric residuals extend pairwise GICP to a multi-frame optimization by forming voxel-based correspondences across selected frames and weighting each residual with point covariances. To improve robustness against drift and revisits, RAMBA enforces temporal consistency during correspondence formation while explicitly supporting loop-closure constraints. Experiments on the ColoRadar and SNAIL Radar datasets show that RAMBA improves map consistency and usually enhances trajectory accuracy over radar--inertial odometry and pose-graph optimization baselines.

Super4DR: 4D Radar-centric Self-supervised Odometry and Gaussian-based Map Optimization

Conventional odometry and mapping methods using visual or LiDAR data often struggle under poor illumination and adverse weather conditions. Although 4D radar is suited for such environments, its sparse and noisy point clouds hinder accurate odometry estimation, while the radar maps suffer from obscure and incomplete structures. Thus, we propose Super4DR, a 4D radar-centric framework for learning-based odometry estimation and gaussian-based map optimization. First, we design a cluster-aware odometry network that incorporates object-level cues from the clustered radar points for inter-frame matching, alongside a hierarchical self-supervision mechanism to overcome outliers through spatio-temporal consistency, knowledge transfer, and feature contrast. Second, we propose using 3D gaussians as an intermediate representation, coupled with a radar-specific growth strategy, selective separation, and multi-view regularization, to recover blurry map areas and those undetected based on image texture. Experiments show that Super4DR achieves a 67% performance gain over prior self-supervised methods, nearly matches supervised odometry, and narrows the map quality disparity with LiDAR while enabling multi-modal image rendering.
