RADAR Perception for Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance onboard small-scale Quadrotor UAVs

Authors: Dnyandeep MandaokarBernhard Rinner

Abstract

Fast dynamic obstacle avoidance (DOA) on uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) demands not only low-latency control and actuation but also reliable perception with sufficient sensing range for accurate obstacle detection and speed estimation. This letter presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first mmWave RADAR-based perception-and-control system for fast onboard DOA. We derive and analyze latency and spatial bounds that relate sensing range, relative speed, and control delay, yielding sufficient conditions for successful avoidance. Our system adopts a lightweight tracker based on interacting multiple models and a controller based on control-barrier functions that directly outputs evasive accelerations. It achieves position errors of less than 0.15 m, 0.93 m, and 0.87 m in x, y, and z directions for 300 experiments with three different object sizes and varying visibility (light and dark), and a similar spread for 90 experiments in smoke. An onboard implementation on a Raspberry Pi 4B demonstrates real-time feasibility with an end-to-end sensing-to-command latency of approximately 14 ms. Code and the full dataset of 390 throws are available (https://tinyurl.com/radardoagit).

OmniRisk: Omnidirectional Trajectory-Risk Learning for Agile Quadrotor Dynamic Avoidance

Agile quadrotor avoidance of fast-moving obstacles requires anticipating collisions and selecting feasible maneuvers within short reaction windows. Reliable predictive avoidance remains challenging because sparse range observations do not directly reveal obstacle motion, while online trajectory optimizers either scale poorly with obstacle count or remain efficient at the expense of reliability in dense, high-speed encounters. We present OmniRisk, an omnidirectional planning framework that learns trajectory-level risk offline for efficient onboard evasion. A fixed-dimensional tensor combines LiDAR range panoramas, dynamic masks, and Cartesian surface velocities to represent geometry and motion jointly. We formulate an asymmetric risk field aligned with obstacle velocity that emphasizes approaching interactions and attenuates receding ones. Accumulating this risk along predicted relative trajectories provides dense supervision and discourages unnecessary hesitation after obstacles pass. A dual-branch circular convolutional network predicts terminal boundary states and dynamic risks for candidate primitives over an omnidirectional anchor lattice in a single forward pass, followed by selection and closed-form reconstruction of the selected candidate primitive. This formulation removes online risk accumulation along trajectories and makes risk-inference cost independent of obstacle count. OmniRisk enables efficient onboard avoidance, with real-world flights demonstrating consecutive evasive maneuvers at relative encounter speeds up to 15 m/s without fine-tuning. LNN-Fly: Continuous-Time UAV Navigation for Robust Obstacle Avoidance under Timing Mismatch

End-to-end unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigation can achieve impressive agility in simulation, yet its obstacle-avoidance behavior often degrades after deployment because the policy must tolerate simulator mismatch, sensing irregularity, and variable-rate control. These effects are especially dangerous in cluttered environments, where stale observations or short control irregularities can directly lead to collisions. We present LNN-Fly, a deployment-oriented continuous-time navigation policy for LiDAR-based UAV obstacle avoidance. The policy combines a dynamic-programming-inspired structured recurrent update, explicit conditioning on the elapsed control interval Δt, and an input-driven adaptive forgetting gate that refreshes stale latent state near hazards while preserving consistency during sustained maneuvers. It is trained with differentiable rollouts that incorporate deployment-relevant sensing and timing perturbations. In simulation, LNN-Fly improves obstacle-avoidance performance in the tested settings and shows better tolerance to reduced control frequency, sparse observations, and control-period jitter. It also transfers zero-shot from a simplified differentiable simulator to a physical quadrotor. In indoor cross-frequency real-world tests, the system achieves 100% success over 20 flights, while policy inference has a median latency of 0.514 ms on a desktop graphics processing unit (GPU) and about 2.5 ms on the onboard central processing unit (CPU), with onboard P95 latency below 30 ms.

SPOT: Spatio-Temporal Obstacle-free Trajectory Planning for UAVs in Unknown Dynamic Environments

We address the problem of reactive motion planning for quadrotors operating in unknown environments with dynamic obstacles. Our approach leverages a 4-dimensional spatio-temporal planner, integrated with vision-based Safe Flight Corridor (SFC) generation and trajectory optimization. Unlike prior methods that rely on map fusion, our framework is mapless, enabling collision avoidance directly from perception while reducing computational overhead. Dynamic obstacles are detected and tracked using a vision-based object segmentation and tracking pipeline, allowing robust classification of static versus dynamic elements in the scene. To further enhance robustness, we introduce a backup planning module that reactively avoids dynamic obstacles when no direct path to the goal is available, mitigating the risk of collisions during deadlock situations. We validate our method extensively in both simulation and real-world hardware experiments, and benchmark it against state-of-the-art approaches, showing significant advantages for reactive UAV navigation in dynamic, unknown environments.
