Overview

The field studies both how AI controls robots and other physical systems and how people can keep autonomous AI agents within defined limits. For embodied control, common approaches include vision-language-action policies, world-action models, model-based planning, and closed-loop skill execution, evaluated in suites such as LIBERO and Meta-World as well as on real robots. For agent oversight, researchers use runtime permission gates, shutdown and override mechanisms, and monitors for tool misuse or sabotage, tested in software environments such as BashArena and LinuxArena. A central tension is that agents need to adapt and act over long horizons, while safeguards can miss strategic or unfamiliar failures, making realistic evaluation and persistent intervention important open challenges.

TraceGuard: Structured Multi-Dimensional Monitoring as a Collusion-Resistant Control Protocol

AI control protocols use monitors to detect attacks by untrusted AI agents, but standard single-score monitors face two limitations: they miss subtle attacks where outputs look clean but reasoning is off, and they collapse to near-zero safety when the monitor is the same model as the agent (collusion). We present TraceGuard, a structured multi-dimensional monitoring protocol that evaluates agent actions across five dimensions -- goal alignment, constraint adherence, reasoning coherence, safety awareness, and action-trace consistency -- scored in parallel by independent LLM calls, augmented by seven heuristic detectors and an LLM-based intent analyzer. We evaluate on BashArena (637 bash tasks, 4 attack categories) within the ControlArena framework. Our results on 519 samples (279 honest, 240 attack) show that: (1) the hybrid approach achieves clear attack-honest separation (attack mean 0.616 vs. honest mean 0.206, Delta=0.410); (2) structured scoring constrains collusion -- the untrusted structured monitor achieves 95% safety vs. 0% for single-score untrusted monitoring; (3) goal alignment and constraint adherence are the most discriminative dimensions; and (4) a separation-of-duties variant splitting dimensions across trusted and untrusted models achieves 100% safety while preventing any single model from seeing the full evaluation. TraceGuard is implemented as a new monitor type for the open-source ControlArena framework.

Shutdown Safety Valves for Advanced AI

One common concern about advanced artificial intelligence is that it will prevent us from turning it off, as that would interfere with pursuing its goals. In this paper, we discuss an unorthodox proposal for addressing this concern: give the AI a (primary) goal of being turned off (see also papers by Martin et al., and by Goldstein and Robinson). We also discuss whether and under what conditions this would be a good idea.

Agentic Problem Frames: A Systematic Approach to Engineering Reliable Domain Agents

Large Language Models (LLMs) are evolving into autonomous agents, yet current "frameless" development--relying on ambiguous natural language without engineering blueprints--leads to critical risks such as scope creep and open-loop failures. To ensure industrial-grade reliability, this study proposes Agentic Problem Frames (APF), a systematic engineering framework that shifts focus from internal model intelligence to the structured interaction between the agent and its environment. The APF establishes a dynamic specification paradigm where intent is concretized at runtime through domain knowledge injection. At its core, the Act-Verify-Refine (AVR) loop functions as a closed-loop control system that transforms execution results into verified knowledge assets, driving system behavior toward asymptotic convergence to mission requirements (R). To operationalize this, this study introduces the Agentic Job Description (AJD), a formal specification tool that defines jurisdictional boundaries, operational contexts, and epistemic evaluation criteria. The efficacy of this framework is validated through two contrasting case studies: a delegated proxy model for business travel and an autonomous supervisor model for industrial equipment management. By applying AJD-based specification and APF modeling to these scenarios, the analysis demonstrates how operational scenarios are systematically controlled within defined boundaries. These cases provide a conceptual proof that agent reliability stems not from a model's internal reasoning alone, but from the rigorous engineering structures that anchor stochastic AI within deterministic business processes, thereby enabling the development of verifiable and dependable domain agents.

Toward a Fully Autonomous, AI-Native Particle Accelerator

This position paper presents a vision for self-driving particle accelerators that operate autonomously with minimal human intervention. We propose that future facilities be designed through artificial intelligence (AI) co-design, where AI jointly optimizes the accelerator lattice, diagnostics, and science application from inception to maximize performance while enabling autonomous operation. Rather than retrofitting AI onto human-centric systems, we envision facilities designed from the ground up as AI-native platforms. We outline nine critical research thrusts spanning agentic control architectures, knowledge integration, adaptive learning, digital twins, health monitoring, safety frameworks, modular hardware design, multimodal data fusion, and cross-domain collaboration. This roadmap aims to guide the accelerator community toward a future where AI-driven design and operation deliver unprecedented science output and reliability.

Demonstration-Free Robotic Control via LLM Agents

Robotic manipulation has increasingly adopted vision-language-action (VLA) models, which achieve strong performance but typically require task-specific demonstrations and fine-tuning, and often generalize poorly under domain shift. We investigate whether general-purpose large language model (LLM) agent frameworks, originally developed for software engineering, can serve as an alternative control paradigm for embodied manipulation. We introduce FAEA (Frontier Agent as Embodied Agent), which applies an LLM agent framework directly to embodied manipulation without modification. Using the same iterative reasoning that enables software agents to debug code, FAEA enables embodied agents to reason through manipulation strategies. We evaluate an unmodified frontier agent, Claude Agent SDK, across the LIBERO, ManiSkill3, and MetaWorld benchmarks. With privileged environment state access, FAEA achieves success rates of 84.9%, 85.7%, and 96%, respectively. This level of task success approaches that of VLA models trained with less than 100 demonstrations per task, without requiring demonstrations or fine-tuning. With one round of human feedback as an optional optimization, performance increases to 88.2% on LIBERO. This demonstration-free capability has immediate practical value: FAEA can autonomously explore novel scenarios in simulation and generate successful trajectories for training data augmentation in embodied learning. Our results indicate that general-purpose agents are sufficient for a class of manipulation tasks dominated by deliberative, task-level planning. This opens a path for robotics systems to leverage actively maintained agent infrastructure and benefit directly from ongoing advances in frontier models. Shutdownable Agents through POST-Agency

Many fear that future artificial agents will resist shutdown. I present an idea - the POST-Agents Proposal - for ensuring that doesn't happen. I propose that we train agents to satisfy Preferences Only Between Same-Length Trajectories (POST). I then prove that POST - together with other conditions - implies Neutrality+: the agent maximizes expected utility, ignoring the probability distribution over trajectory-lengths. I argue that Neutrality+ keeps agents shutdownable and allows them to be useful.
