Citation Verification
Overview
Citation verification studies whether references are real and whether their sources support the claims they accompany. Systems combine metadata and DOI lookups, scholarly or web retrieval, passage-level entailment checks, and LLM or agent judgments, sometimes with deterministic rules and human review. Benchmarks test these methods on scientific references, retrieval-augmented answers, and legal, clinical, and document-based tasks. A central challenge is that an existing, relevant citation may still fail to warrant a claim’s full strength, while false positives and poor calibration can make automated alerts unreliable.
