Generative AI in Education
Overview
This field studies how generative AI can assist learners and educators, from tutoring and writing feedback to lesson, quiz, and multimedia creation. Common approaches include retrieval-augmented generation grounded in course materials, pedagogically guided prompts and agents, and personalized support based on learner progress, often with teachers reviewing outputs. Researchers assess these systems through classroom trials, learning and transfer measures, interaction analysis, and benchmarks for pedagogical quality, accuracy, and safety. A central tension is that AI can improve task performance and access to help without necessarily building durable understanding or learner agency, while reliability, bias, privacy, and academic integrity remain open concerns.
