mmWave Radar Sensing
mmWave: Millimeter Wave
Overview
Millimeter-wave radar sensing studies how to recover useful information about people and environments from reflected radio signals, including motion and distance measurements that can work without identifiable images and in poor visibility. Methods process raw I/Q signals, range-Doppler tensors, or sparse point clouds using signal processing, neural networks, and radar-camera or radar-LiDAR fusion. Applications include 4D automotive detection and mapping, human pose and activity recognition, vital-sign monitoring, and robot localization; evaluation uses driving, indoor, and health datasets, often across people, environments, and weather conditions. A central challenge is making systems reliable under sparse measurements, multipath, sensor misalignment, and distribution shifts, while balancing learned representations against physical modeling and the cost of collecting diverse real-world data.
