Mobile Robotics
Overview
Mobile robotics brings together the sensing, mapping, planning, and control needed for robots to move and perform tasks in homes, workplaces, outdoor terrain, and other environments. Common approaches include SLAM and odometry for localization, occupancy and semantic maps for representing surroundings, and classical motion planning and safety control alongside reinforcement learning and vision-language models. Work also addresses mobile manipulation, human-aware navigation, multi-robot coordination, and resource limits such as battery life, computation, and sensing. A central challenge is making methods that succeed in simulation or structured settings remain safe and reliable amid real-world uncertainty, changing conditions, and hardware constraints.
