Morphosyntactic Tagging
Overview
Morphosyntactic tagging identifies each word’s part of speech and, where relevant, its grammatical features, helping computers analyze sentence structure across languages. Common approaches include CRF and BiLSTM-CRF sequence taggers, fine-tuned multilingual transformers, and newer LLM prompting or structured prediction methods. Evaluation often uses manually annotated corpora and Universal Dependencies-aligned benchmarks, including settings with low-resource, historical, spoken, and code-mixed language. A central challenge is resolving ambiguity in morphologically complex languages when labeled data are scarce: multilingual transfer and LLMs can help, but their reliability, annotation needs, and computational costs remain concerns.
