Multi-Objective Motion Planning
Overview
The field studies how robots and autonomous vehicles can plan motions when goals such as avoiding risk, reaching targets quickly, moving smoothly, and conserving resources conflict. Common approaches include Pareto and evolutionary search, weighted optimization, sampling-based planners, trajectory optimization, and learned policies that guide online control. Researchers apply these methods in settings ranging from autonomous driving and robot arms to multi-robot coordination under uncertainty, using simulations, task-specific tests, and emerging standardized benchmarks. A central challenge is finding diverse, feasible trade-offs quickly while evaluating them consistently, especially when uncertainty, interacting agents, or safety constraints are involved.
