Decoupling Spherical Reasoning from Dense Prediction for 360 Depth Estimation

The equirectangular projection (ERP) is widely used for panoramic depth estimation, but its spatially varying distortion makes geometry-consistent feature modeling challenging. We revisit panoramic depth estimation by decoupling contextual modeling in native spherical space from dense ERP prediction. To this end, we propose a Fibonacci Spherical Graph (FSG) as an intermediate reasoning space to lift ERP features onto quasi-uniform Fibonacci nodes on the sphere and capture local and long-range dependencies through complementary spherical neighborhoods. The resulting spherical discretization distributes graph nodes approximately uniformly over the spherical surface, reducing the over-representation of highly stretched regions during relational modeling. Operating on a compact set of Fibonacci nodes also avoids the computational burden of constructing and processing a graph at full ERP resolution. To bridge spherical reasoning and dense prediction, we propose a Spherical Context Conditioning (SCC) module that adaptively modulates dense ERP features with the enhanced spherical representation, allowing spherical context to guide pixel-aligned depth prediction. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method consistently achieves superior depth accuracy over existing approaches.

OmniDS: Dual-Stream Context Fusion for Omnidirectional Depth from Fisheye Cameras

Omnidirectional depth estimation from multi-fisheye camera rigs is complicated by visibility conflicts: wide baselines cause different cameras to observe different portions, or even different faces, of the same object, so aggregating their features into a unified equirectangular (ERP) representation under fixed projection produces ambiguous matching evidence near occlusion boundaries and thin structures. Although existing methods mitigate this by down-weighting unreliable views, they do not resolve the underlying discrepancy because context formation and cross-view fusion remain tied to rigid fisheye-to-ERP sampling. We present OmniDS, an iterative depth refinement framework that replaces rigid aggregation by combining dynamic context fusion with consensus-aware multi-view similarity. A dual-stream encoder pairs a lightweight CNN for geometric detail with a frozen DINOv3 for semantic priors; their features are reprojected into ERP space at each refinement step via learned view weighting and deformable cross-attention with geometric distortion bias. In parallel, a multi-view consensus volume captures global cross-camera agreement through group-wise correlation and feature variance, regularized by a 3D U-Net. For efficient deployment, we distill the dual-stream representation into a single MobileNet-based encoder. OmniDS achieves state-of-the-art performance on the OmniThings, OmniHouse, and Sunny benchmarks while maintaining competitive inference speed. Panoramic Scene Understanding: A Survey from Distortion-Aware Engineering to Sphere-Native Modeling

Panoramic images capture the full visual sphere in a frame, offering context unavailable to conventional cameras. Yet this completeness has an unavoidable geometric cost: the 2-sphere cannot be faithfully mapped to the plane, and every projection introduces distortions that challenge standard vision architectures. This survey traces panoramic scene understanding from projection-based adaptation and distortion-aware engineering to sphere-native modeling, reflecting increasing commitment to spherical geometry. Foundation models form a fourth family, geometry-aware tokenization, which adapts the input interface while reusing perspective-pretrained weights. We review these approaches across five task families: dense prediction, unified multi-task understanding, open-world perception, vision-language reasoning, and dynamic video analysis. Across tasks, the same shift toward spherical geometry recurs. In practice, however, the field has converged not on the strongest sphere-native operators, which are exactly rotation-equivariant but cannot reuse perspective-pretrained backbones and thus have not scaled, but on a compatibility-preserving middle ground combining moderate geometric awareness with large pretrained models. This commitment is uneven: deepest in dense prediction and shallowest in dynamic perception, where methods are spatially sphere-aware yet temporally planar. Foundation-model adaptation has advanced panoramic depth fastest, while layout, surface-normal, and video-level understanding remain largely unexplored. No panoramic foundation model has yet been pretrained on spherical data. We identify five evaluation gaps: spherical-area-weighted metrics, seam-consistency tests, polar-robustness stratification, cross-projection generalization, and standardized open-world protocols. We conclude with a six-point roadmap toward general-purpose panoramic intelligence.

DepthMaster: Unified Monocular Depth Estimation for Perspective and Panoramic Images

While monocular depth estimation has achieved significant progress, achieving generalized metric depth estimation for both narrow field-of-view (FoV) perspectives and 360∘360^\circ panoramas remains an unsolved challenge. Existing methods are often tailored to specific camera types and struggle to produce accurate metric depth that generalizes across diverse settings. This limitation stems from two key challenges: the inherent geometric discrepancy between perspective and panoramic cameras, and the scarcity of panoramic training data with metric annotations. In this work, we introduce DepthMaster, a unified metric depth estimation framework. Rather than employing specialized networks to learn spherical distortions, we reformulate the problem by decomposing panoramic images into overlapping perspective patches. Crucially, distinct from prior projection-based methods that rely on ad-hoc architectural modifications to handle boundaries, we introduce a novel Correspondence Consistency Loss (CCL) and inject virtual projection cameras as geometric priors, allowing us to seamlessly stitch the patches while avoiding specialized operators and keeping the backbone largely compatible with standard Transformer designs. This strategy also resolves the geometric differences by unifying all inputs into a canonical perspective representation, and effectively circumvents data scarcity by directly unlocking powerful metric priors from vast perspective datasets. Trained on a mixed dataset that contains only one panorama dataset, DepthMaster achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance on 13 diverse datasets, outperforming not only universal methods but also leading specialist models in both perspective and panoramic domains.

Unified Panoramic Geometry Estimation via Multi-View Foundation Models

Geometry estimation from perspective images has greatly advanced, maturing to the point where off-the-shelf foundation models are able to reconstruct 3D scene structure not only from multi-view imagery, but even from a single view. A natural extension is 3D reconstruction from panoramas, with the exciting prospect of recovering a full 360-degree scene from a single panoramic image. In this work, we introduce PaGeR (Panoramic Geometry Reconstruction), a framework to lift powerful 3D foundation models designed for perspective imagery to the panorama domain. Our strategy is to start from a pre-trained transformer for 3D reconstruction and turn it into a unified high-performance model that predicts scale-invariant depth, metric depth, surface normals, and sky masks from both perspective and omnidirectional images, in a single forward pass. By keeping architectural changes to a minimum and mixing perspective and panoramic images during training, PaGeR retains the rich 3D prior of the underlying foundation model while learning to also estimate geometrically consistent 360-degree scenes from single panoramas. We extensively test our method in both indoor and outdoor environments and find that it delivers state-of-the-art performance and excellent zero-shot performance across a wide range of scenes. Code, data and models are available here.

Sphere-Depth: A Benchmark for Depth Estimation Methods with Varying Spherical Camera Orientations

Reliable depth estimation from spherical images is crucial for 360° vision in robotic navigation and immersive scene understanding. However, the onboard spherical camera can experience unintentional pose variations in real-world robotic platforms that, along with the geometric distortions inherent in equirectangular projections, significantly impact the effectiveness of depth estimation. To study this issue, a novel public benchmark, called Sphere-Depth, is introduced to systematically evaluate the robustness of monocular depth estimation models from equirectangular images in a reproducible way. Camera pose perturbations are simulated and used to assess the performance of a popular perspective-based model, Depth Anything, and of spherical-aware models such as Depth Anywhere, ACDNet, Bifuse++, and SliceNet. Furthermore, to ensure meaningful evaluation across models, a depth calibration-based error protocol is proposed to convert predicted relative depth values into metric depth values using supervised learned scaling factors for each model. Experiments show that even models explicitly designed to process spherical images exhibit substantial performance degradation when variations in the camera pose are observed with respect to the canonical pose. VGGT-360: Geometry-Consistent Zero-Shot Panoramic Depth Estimation

This paper presents VGGT-360, a novel training-free framework for zero-shot, geometry-consistent panoramic depth estimation. Unlike prior view-independent training-free approaches, VGGT-360 reformulates the task as panoramic reprojection over multi-view reconstructed 3D models by leveraging the intrinsic 3D consistency of VGGT-like foundation models, thereby unifying fragmented per-view reasoning into a coherent panoramic understanding. To achieve robust and accurate estimation, VGGT-360 integrates three plug-and-play modules that form a unified panorama-to-3D-to-depth framework: (i) Uncertainty-guided adaptive projection slices panoramas into perspective views to bridge the domain gap between panoramic inputs and VGGT's perspective prior. It estimates gradient-based uncertainty to allocate denser views to geometry-poor regions, yielding geometry-informative inputs for VGGT. (ii) Structure-saliency enhanced attention strengthens VGGT's robustness during 3D reconstruction by injecting structure-aware confidence into its attention layers, guiding focus toward geometrically reliable regions and enhancing cross-view coherence. (iii) Correlation-weighted 3D model correction refines the reconstructed 3D model by reweighting overlapping points using attention-inferred correlation scores, providing a consistent geometric basis for accurate panoramic reprojection. Extensive experiments show that VGGT-360 outperforms both trained and training-free state-of-the-art methods across multiple resolutions and diverse indoor and outdoor datasets.

Reference-Free Omnidirectional Stereo Matching via Multi-View Consistency Maximization

Reliable omnidirectional depth estimation from multi-fisheye stereo matching is pivotal to many applications, such as embodied robotics. Existing approaches either rely on spherical sweeping with heuristic fusion strategies to build the cost columns or perform reference-centric stereo matching based on rectified views. However, these methods fail to explicitly exploit geometric relationships between multiple views, rendering them less capable of capturing the global dependencies, visibility, or scale changes. In this paper, we shift to a new perspective and propose a novel reference-free framework, dubbed FreeOmniMVS, via multi-view consistency maximization. The highlight of FreeOmniMVS is that it can aggregate pair-wise correlations into a robust, visibility-aware, and global consensus. As such, it is tolerant to occlusions, partial overlaps, and varying baselines. Specifically, to achieve global coherence, we introduce a novel View-pair Correlation Transformer (VCT) that explicitly models pairwise correlation volumes across all camera view pairs, allowing us to drop unreliable pairs caused by occlusion or out-of-focus observations. To realize scalable and visibility-aware consensus, we propose a lightweight attention mechanism that adaptively fuses the correlation vectors, eliminating the need for a designated reference view and allowing all cameras to contribute equally to the stereo matching process. Extensive experiments on diverse benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method for globally consistent, visibility-aware, and scale-aware omnidirectional depth estimation.

PanoDP: Learning Collision-Free Navigation with Panoramic Depth and Differentiable Physics

Autonomous collision-free navigation in cluttered environments requires safe decision-making under partial observability with both static structure and dynamic obstacles. We present PanoDP, a communication-free learning framework that combines four-view panoramic depth perception with differentiable-physics-based training signals. PanoDP encodes panoramic depth using a lightweight CNN and optimizes policies with dense differentiable collision and motion-feasibility terms, improving training stability beyond sparse terminal collisions. We evaluate PanoDP on a controlled ring-to-center benchmark with systematic sweeps over agent count, obstacle density/layout, and dynamic behaviors, and further test out-of-distribution generalization in an external simulator (e.g., AirSim). Across settings, PanoDP increases collision-free and completion rates over single-view and non-physics-guided baselines under matched training budgets, and ablations (view masking, rotation augmentation) confirm the policy leverages 360-degree information. Code will be open source upon acceptance.

RePer-360: Releasing Perspective Priors for 360∘^\circ Depth Estimation via Self-Modulation

Recent depth foundation models trained on perspective imagery achieve strong performance, yet generalize poorly to 360∘^\circ images due to the substantial geometric discrepancy between perspective and panoramic domains. Moreover, fully fine-tuning these models typically requires large amounts of panoramic data. To address this issue, we propose RePer-360, a distortion-aware self-modulation framework for monocular panoramic depth estimation that adapts depth foundation models while preserving powerful pretrained perspective priors. Specifically, we design a lightweight geometry-aligned guidance module to derive a modulation signal from two complementary projections (i.e., ERP and CP) and use it to guide the model toward the panoramic domain without overwriting its pretrained perspective knowledge. We further introduce a Self-Conditioned AdaLN-Zero mechanism that produces pixel-wise scaling factors to reduce the feature distribution gap between the perspective and panoramic domains. In addition, a cubemap-domain consistency loss further improves training stability and cross-projection alignment. By shifting the focus from complementary-projection fusion to panoramic domain adaptation under preserved pretrained perspective priors, RePer-360 surpasses standard fine-tuning methods while using only 1% of the training data. Under the same in-domain training setting, it further achieves an approximately 20% improvement in RMSE. The code is available at https://github.com/munimo/RePer360.

SO3UFormer: Learning Intrinsic Spherical Features for Rotation-Robust Panoramic Dense Prediction

Panoramic dense-prediction models, spanning semantic segmentation and depth estimation, are typically trained under a strict gravity-aligned assumption. Real-world captures, however, routinely violate it: handheld devices jitter and aerial platforms change attitude, so the camera is rarely upright. Under such 3D reorientation, standard spherical Transformers overfit global latitude cues and collapse. We introduce SO3UFormer, an architecture that learns intrinsic spherical features largely decoupled from the underlying coordinate frame, through three geometric components: (1) removing absolute latitude encoding, which breaks the dependence on the gravity axis; (2) quadrature-consistent spherical attention, which corrects for non-uniform sampling density; and (3) a gauge-aware relative positional bias built from local tangent-plane angles rather than global axes. A logit-space SO(3)-consistency regularizer, used only during training, further suppresses residual discretization effects. To benchmark robustness, we introduce Pose35, a variant of Stanford2D3D perturbed by random rotations within ±35∘\pm 35^\circ, and evaluate under a full, arbitrary SO(3) stress test. There, the baseline SphereUFormer collapses from 67.53 mIoU on Pose35 to 25.26 under the full SO(3) test, whereas SO3UFormer reaches 72.03 on Pose35 and retains 70.67 under the same test. Similarly, on a second real-world dataset (Matterport3D) for segmentation and on panoramic depth estimation, SO3UFormer remains essentially rotation-invariant while the gravity-anchored baseline again loses most of its accuracy. Code and models are available at https://github.com/zhuqinfeng1999/SO3UFormer.

Depth Anything in 360∘360^\circ: Towards Scale Invariance in the Wild

Panoramic depth estimation captures the complete 360∘^\circ scene geometry, being essential for robotics and AR/VR applications. While perspective depth models have achieved remarkable zero-shot generalization via large-scale training, panoramic methods lag behind, especially for open-world scenes, due to data scarcity. To bridge this gap, we introduce DA360, a panoramic-adapted version of Depth Anything V2. Our key insight is that the base DAV2 model, trained on perspective images to predict affine-invariant disparity, already exhibits good zero-shot performance on panoramas. Building on this, we design a lightweight adaptation framework that (i) learns a per-image shift from the ViT class token with scale-invariant supervision, transforming affine-invariant disparity into scale-invariant disparity that directly yields well-formed 3D point clouds, and (ii) integrates circular padding into the DPT decoder to eliminate seam artifacts, ensuring spatial coherence. Fine-tuned on a combination of synthetic indoor and outdoor panoramic data, DA360 is evaluated on standard real-world indoor benchmarks and our newly curated outdoor dataset, Metropolis. Results show that DA360 not only outperforms the original DAV2 by over 50% and 12% relative error reduction indoors and outdoors, but also surpasses prior specialized methods like PanDA by about 25--35% across all tests, establishing state-of-the-art zero-shot panoramic depth estimation.
