Structure-Preserving Quantum Circuit Architectures for Robot Kinematics

Structured spatial data require quantum encodings that preserve geometric relations, expose measurable observables, and remain implementable on finite-depth hardware. This work introduces a quantum representation and circuit architecture for rigid-body transformations and specializes it to Denavit--Hartenberg kinematics of serial open-chain manipulators. Each translational contribution is factorized into a classical metric magnitude and a signed unit direction encoded by a single-qubit Bloch vector, while parameterized rotations reproduce the ordered propagation of frame directions. A selector register prepares probabilities proportional to the contribution magnitudes, and the reduced state of a designated readout qubit encodes their normalized weighted sum. The retained classical scale then reconstructs the metric end-effector position. Two additional readout qubits encode terminal-frame axes, providing a compact and geometrically interpretable pose interface. At the ideal expectation-value level, measured Pauli observables reproduce the corresponding classical kinematic quantities. Alternative circuit architectures realize the same representation with different tradeoffs in qubit count, circuit depth, controlled operations, and measurement requirements. Validation on a serial manipulator yields numerically negligible position and orientation reconstruction errors under ideal simulation. Finite-shot simulations, noisy executions, transpilation analysis, and a hardware demonstration further characterize statistical error, noise sensitivity, and implementation overhead without asserting computational advantage.

Classical SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2) Models Match or Exceed Shallow Variational Quantum Circuits on Vision Benchmarks

Quaternion-valued neural networks and variational quantum circuits (VQCs) both derive local transformations from SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2) geometry, yet their performance on classical supervised learning remains poorly understood. We compare real-valued, quaternion-valued, and quantum classification heads on identical frozen features across MNIST, FashionMNIST, and CIFAR-10. CIFAR-10 uses a learned 16-dimensional bottleneck and frozen ImageNet-pretrained ResNet18 features to separate architecture from representation quality. Quaternion classifiers match or approach real-valued baselines while outperforming shallow VQCs. On MNIST and FashionMNIST, quaternion networks nearly equal real-valued MLPs, whereas product-state VQCs show lower accuracy and higher cost. On CIFAR-10, quaternion networks retain 94--97% of real-valued performance and remain stable under a 32-fold increase in dimensionality. Product-state circuits underperform quaternion classifiers, while entanglement gives modest grayscale gains but reverses under pretrained CNN features (9.25 pp degradation vs.\ product-state). Fubini--Study/QFI natural gradients improve geometric alignment but not short-horizon loss reduction vs.\ Adam. A Friedman test on five-seed MNIST detects model differences (χ2=12.796χ^2=12.796, p=0.0051p=0.0051, n=5n=5), with Wilcoxon tests yielding large effect sizes (d>5d>5) for QuatNet vs.\ quantum comparisons. For FashionMNIST and CIFAR-10, large effects (d>2.0d>2.0) are the primary statistic given n=3n=3. These results indicate that quaternion networks provide efficient, stable SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2) alternatives to shallow VQCs on tasks lacking intrinsic quantum structure. Shared local SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2) geometry and shallow entanglement are insufficient, within the regime studied, to confer practical quantum advantage. Conclusions are limited to shallow, measurement-limited circuits on such tasks.

Quaternion-Averaging-Based Adaptive Complementary Filter for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning With a Foot-Mounted AHRS

Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) can be applied to indoor navigation systems. GPS suffers from signal degradation due to roofs and high-rise buildings, whereas PDR can estimate positions without being affected by such signal degradation. The accuracy of a foot-mounted AHRS(Attitude and Heading Reference System)-based PDR depends on the accuracy of the attitude estimation algorithm used in the AHRS. In this article, a Quaternion-Averaging-Based Adaptive Complementary Filter (QAACF) for PDR with a foot-mounted AHRS is proposed to improve estimation accuracy while reducing computational cost. QAACF fuses a quaternion derived from angular velocity with quaternions derived from acceleration and magnetic field measurements using Markley's quaternion averaging, which combines two quaternions more rigorously than linear interpolation. In addition, QAACF adaptively adjusts the weights of angular velocity, acceleration, and magnetic field measurements according to gait phases and the level of magnetic disturbances. Experimental results showed that the proposed QAACF achieves low Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) compared to existing attitude estimation filters while requiring lower computational cost than Kalman filters.

Bridge the Gaps: Heterogeneous Attributed Graph Clustering via Quaternion Representation Learning

Attributed graph clustering partitions nodes by jointly exploiting node attributes and graph topology. It remains challenging due to attribute heterogeneity and representation degradation during graph learning. Real-world datasets often contain heterogeneous attributes, i.e., numerical and categorical attributes, complicating unified representation learning. This challenge becomes more complex in attributed graphs, where constructing a clustering-friendly graph structure from attributes and topology remains difficult. Under deep graph architectures, repeated graph propagation causes node embeddings to become overly similar, leading to the over-smoothing (OS) effect. Meanwhile, graph representation learning amplifies topological influence, making discriminative attribute information harder to exploit for clustering, an effect we refer to as over-dominating (OD). To bridge these gaps, an end-to-end framework, Any-type attributed Graph REpresentation lEarning (AGREE), is proposed. It unifies attributed graphs and any-type attributed data through multi-level alignment and similarity-based graph construction. Quaternion-based graph convolution strengthens attribute interaction to alleviate OD, while shallow graph architectures help relieve OS. The learned embeddings are jointly optimized for graph reconstruction and clustering, without requiring a predefined number of clusters during training. Experiments on diverse benchmarks show that AGREE achieves strong overall performance in accuracy, robustness, and adaptability.

QC-GAN: A Parameter-Efficient Quaternion Conformer GAN for High-Fidelity Speech Enhancement

We propose a parameter-efficient speech enhancement framework, Quaternion Conformer GAN (QC-GAN), which combines a Quaternion Conformer generator with MetricGAN-based training. The Hamilton product encodes the magnitude and phase via structured weight sharing, reducing the number of layer parameters while preserving their interdependencies. A metric-learning discriminator was employed to maximize perceptual quality by optimizing the approximate perceptual evaluation scores. On the VoiceBank+DEMAND dataset, QC-GAN achieved a Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) score of 3.48 with only 0.89M parameters, delivering a performance comparable to state-of-the-art models at less than half their size. A 35K-parameter variant achieved a PESQ score of 3.23, surpassing conventional methods with significantly fewer parameters. Evaluation on the DNS-Challenge 3 dataset further confirmed generalization to real-world conditions.

Dual Quaternion-Based Unscented Kalman Filter with Visual Inertial Odometry for Navigation in GPS-Denied Environments

Reliable navigation in GPS-denied environments remains a fundamental challenge in robotics, aerospace, and autonomous vehicle applications. This paper presents a Dual Quaternion-Based Unscented Kalman Filter (DQUKF) equipped with a Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) algorithm for accurate state estimation enabling navigation in GPS denied locations. The proposed framework formulates the DQUKF in an error state manner, where the nominal pose is represented by a unit dual quaternion and the local pose error is represented by a 6-dimensional twistor parameterization used for sigma point generation, covariance propagation, and measurement correction. In parallel, the VIO algorithm tracks features across image frames, synchronizes measurements between the IMU and camera, and provides visual constraints that complement inertial propagation. Simulation results on the EuRoC MAV dataset show that the proposed DQUKF converges under high initialization uncertainty and achieves a position RMSE of 0.2584~m in the difficult flight sequence, outperforming the benchmark filters.

A New Quaternion-Joint Cable-Driven Redundant Manipulator Configuration and its Control Through FABRIK and Residual Reinforcement Learning

Robotic arms capable of traversing arbitrary spatial paths, especially in highly obstructed workspaces, are highly desired across several industries. Quaternion-joints have recently empowered a specific class of robotic arms -- cable-driven redundant manipulators -- beyond its prior capabilities. Specifically, quaternion-joints reduce the number of required motors per degree of freedom, paving the way for more compact solutions. An ongoing challenge is that the complexity of the kinematic model of quaternion joints challenges a priori decisions on manipulator configurations and imposes higher computational demands on the control system and its non-linearities amplify all discrepancies between design and physical artifact arising from fabrication imprecision. Here we show a that a 4-segment, 8-joint manipulator can achieve a broader workspace than extant configurations, at lower hardware cost, and that Residual Reinforcement Learning outperforms extant state-of-the-art methods -- specifically, the FABRIK algorithm -- on the control of such manipulator. Our results show that this configuration is more workspace-effective than prior designs, and that Residual Reinforcement Learning outperforms FABRIK by three orders of magnitude on positional and orientational accuracy, effecting precise control of the novel 4-segment, 8-joint manipulator. Additionally, the control implementation is simpler: we describe the complete FABRIK process for control and corresponding learning implementation. Our methodology is applicable to the design of new systems, providing designers with further tools for the development of this class of manipulators and corresponding control systems for novel configurations.

Decoupled Thrust-Axis Attitude Control Using Quaternions for Chandrayaan-3 Lunar Landing Mission

Chandrayaan-3 mission achieved a historic milestone with its successful soft landing near the lunar south pole, highlighting the critical role of the navigation, guidance, and control (NGC) system. Navigation provided vehicle state estimates relative to the Moon center, while a polynomial based guidance scheme computed the required acceleration profile to meet terminal landing conditions. This acceleration demand was translated into total thrust magnitude and attitude commands generation. Attitude command generation involved aligning the thrust axis with the required acceleration vector and constraining rotation about the thrust axis, typically governed by mission-specific requirements. Although quaternion-based control laws are preferred for their singularity-free representation, they inherently couple all three rotational axes. This coupling can lead to undesirable interactions between guidance and control, especially during large rotations about the thrust axis, due to the quaternion shortest-path property. This paper proposes a novel quaternion-based decoupling method that enables independent thrust-axis control, mitigating guidance-control interaction and ensuring proper attitude commands generation for lander attitude control.

Hurwitz Quaternion Multiplicative Quantization for KV Cache Compression

We propose \textbf{Hurwitz Quaternion Multiplicative Quantization (HQMQ)}, a \textbf{calibration-free} method for KV cache compression of large language models. HQMQ treats each 4-element chunk of K or V as a quaternion and quantizes its unit direction to the \emph{product} qp⋅qsq_p \cdot q_s, where qpq_p ranges over the 24-element Hurwitz group 2T2T (the 24 vertices of the 24-cell on S3S^3, pairwise angle 60∘60^\circ) and qsq_s ranges over a per-(layer, head) secondary codebook of SS \emph{random} unit quaternions. The multiplicative composition yields 24S24S effective codewords at SS stored parameters; random initialization suffices because left-multiplication is an S3S^3 isometry, so seeded codebooks vary in end-task ppl by <1.5%<1.5\%. A per-batch median-multiplier outlier extraction step (C=3C{=}3, no calibration) handles modern outlier-heavy architectures. We evaluate on five modern open models: Mistral-7B (dense MHA), Llama-3-8B and Qwen2.5-7B and Qwen3-8B (dense GQA), and gpt-oss-20b (sparse MoE). On Mistral-7B and Qwen3-8B, HQMQ matches fp16 within 0.020.02--0.030.03 ppl points at ∼\sim5 bits. On Qwen2.5-7B and Qwen3-8B, where naive int4 collapses to 104+10^4{+} ppl, HQMQ + Med3×\times recovers fp16 quality within 0.020.02--0.100.10 ppl points at ∼\sim5 bits. HQMQ Pareto-dominates naive int by 33--1900×1900\times at matched bits across all five models, and downstream zero-shot accuracy matches fp16 at 3.793.79 bits on Mistral. Against the strongest calibrated KV-quantization baseline, HQMQ at 3.793.79 bits matches KIVI-4 (∼4.5\sim 4.5 bits) within ∼1{\sim}1 pt on CoQA, 0.60.6 pts on TruthfulQA, and 2.32.3 pts on GSM8K, at 16%16\% fewer bits and without a calibration pass. At the storage level, HQMQ delivers up to 5.05×5.05\times KV compression, shrinking a Llama-3-70B 128k-context cache from 43 GB to 8.5 GB.

Quaternion Self-Attention with Shared Scores

Quaternion neural networks are parameter-efficient and model multidimensional dependencies by representing four related features as a single entity. However, existing quaternion self-attention computes component-wise scores and applies independent softmax operations to each component, which increases the computational cost and allows attention distributions to diverge across components. We propose a shared-score quaternion self-attention mechanism that computes a single real-valued score using the quaternion inner product and applies a shared attention distribution across all components. This reduces score-computation multiplications by 75% and the number of softmax operations from four to one. We prove that, when queries and keys are produced by quaternion linear projections that induce component pre-mixing, the component-wise and shared scores lie in the same interaction subspace, indicating that independent component-wise attention primarily re-parameterizes the same interactions rather than expanding the feature interaction space. In speech enhancement, our method reduces inference time by up to 44.3% on a GPU and 58.1% on a CPU while maintaining quality, with consistent trends across vision and natural language processing.

Generalizable and Actionable Parts Pose Estimation with Symmetry Annotation-Free Learning Strategy

Urgently needed generalizable robot object interaction and manipulation requires high-quality Cross-Category object perception. As a pioneer of this area, Generalizable and Actionable Parts (GAParts) understanding has attracted increasing attention from relevant researchers. However, most recent works either have insufficient design regarding the symmetry issue or require rich symmetry annotation, which severely impedes precise GAPart pose estimation in data-lacking scenarios. In this paper, we propose SAFAG, a novel Symmetry Annotation-Free framework for Generalizable and Actionable Parts Pose Estimation. Specifically, we suggest a stepwise refinement two-stage framework for candidate-to-final quaternion regression, and tackle the symmetry prediction as a probability distribution problem with self-supervised learning strategy. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance and robustness of our SAFAG. We believe that our work has the enormous potential to be applied in many areas of embodied AI system.

A Family of Quaternion-Valued Differential Evolution Algorithms for Numerical Function Optimization

The numerical optimization of continuous functions is a fundamental task in many scientific and engineering domains, ranging from mechanical design to training of artificial intelligence models. Among the most effective and widely used algorithms for this purpose is Differential Evolution (DE), known for its simplicity and strong performance. Recent research has shown that adapting AI models to operate over alternative number systems-such as complex numbers, quaternions, and geometric algebras-can improve model compactness and accuracy. However, such extensions remain underexplored in bio-inspired optimization algorithms. In particular, the use of quaternion algebra represents an emerging area in computational intelligence. This paper introduces a family of novel Quaternion-Valued Differential Evolution (QDE) algorithms that operate directly in the quaternion space. We propose several mutation strategies specifically designed to exploit the algebraic and geometric properties of quaternions. Results show that our QDE variants achieve faster convergence and superior performance on several function classes in the BBOB benchmark compared to the traditional real-valued DE algorithm.

Pose Tracking with a Foundation Pose Model and an Ensemble Directional Kalman Filter

This paper introduces the ensemble directional Kalman filter (EnDKF), an ensemble-based Kalman filtering approach for pose tracking that jointly estimates an object's position and attitude using ideas from directional statistics. The EnDKF integrates a unit-quaternion attitude representation to move beyond canonical Kalman filter mean and covariance assumptions that poorly capture directional uncertainty. Experiments on a synthetic constant-velocity constant-angular-velocity system and a digital-twin head-tracking scenario using the FoundationPose algorithm demonstrate a significant reduction in error as opposed to merely using measurements.

Observability Conditions and Filter Design for Visual Pose Estimation via Dual Quaternions

This paper presents a dual quaternion framework for 6-DOF visual target tracking that addresses key limitations of perspective-n-point (PnnP) solvers: sensitivity to noise and outliers, and inability to propagate estimates through measurement dropouts. A nonlinear observability analysis is performed using a Lie algebraic approach, deriving sufficient conditions for local observability under two sensing modalities: relative position vector and unit vector measurements. For the unit vector case, the classical collinear feature point degeneracy of the perspective-three-point problem is recovered through rank analysis of the observability codistribution matrix, providing a control-theoretic interpretation of a previously geometric result. A dual quaternion Lie group unscented Kalman filter is then developed, directly modeling relative dynamics without assumptions about cooperative measurements or slowly-varying motion. Simulations demonstrate improved pose estimation accuracy and robustness to occlusions compared to an off-the-shelf PnnP solver. Results are broadly applicable to visual-inertial navigation, simultaneous localization and mapping, and PnnP solver development.

Quaternion Nonlinear Transform-Induced Nuclear Norm for Low-Rank Tensor Completion

Tensor completion has emerged as a powerful framework for recovering missing data in multidimensional signals by exploiting low-rank tensor structures. Among existing approaches, linear transform-based tensor nuclear norm (TNN) methods have achieved considerable success by enforcing low-rankness on transformed frontal slices. However, the low-rank structure revealed by linear transforms remains inherently limited. To better capture intrinsic correlations, nonlinear transform-based TNN (NTTNN) models have been proposed, significantly enhancing low-rank representation through composite transforms. Despite their effectiveness, existing NTTNN methods are restricted to real-valued tensors and fail to model quaternion-valued data, which are essential for preserving inter-channel dependencies in color images and videos. Extending nonlinear TNN models to the quaternion domain is challenging due to the non-commutativity of quaternion multiplication and the complexity of quaternion singular value decomposition. To address the limitations encountered in prior works, we propose a quaternion nonlinear transform-induced tensor nuclear norm (QNTTNN) via a real embedding of quaternions, enabling tractable nuclear norm definitions and efficient optimization. Building upon QNTTNN, we formulate a quaternion tensor completion model and develop a proximal alternating minimization algorithm with rigorous convergence guarantees. Extensive experiments on benchmark color video inpainting datasets validate the superior performance of the proposed method over existing approaches.
