Robotic Construction
Overview
Robotic construction studies how machines can assemble structures and carry out tasks in settings ranging from block, timber, and masonry work to heavy-equipment operation and lunar habitats. Common approaches combine vision or LiDAR with task and skill planning, model-predictive control, reinforcement learning, diffusion policies, compliant robot design, and human teleoperation. Systems are tested in simulation and on physical robots, with tasks such as precision insertion, repetitive assembly, ceiling marking, site localization, and multi-robot fabrication. A central challenge is making methods reliable amid changing site conditions, material tolerances, contact uncertainty, and safety constraints while improving on the speed and flexibility of human work.
