Type 1 Diabetes
Overview
Type 1 diabetes research studies how to manage glucose when the body produces little or no insulin, using continuous glucose monitor data alongside insulin, meal, and personal-context information. Common approaches include neural time-series models, patient-specific physiological models and digital twins, and hybrid systems that combine these methods for glucose forecasting and hypoglycemia detection. Reinforcement learning is also being explored for personalized behavioral recommendations, while shared benchmarks aim to make forecasting results comparable across datasets and input types. A central challenge is that accurate forecasts of observed glucose do not necessarily predict how glucose will respond to a planned intervention, so methods must balance predictive accuracy, physiological plausibility, personalization, and safety.
