A Multi-Vehicle Dataset with Camera, LiDAR, and Radar Sensors and Scanned 3D Models for Custom Auto-Annotation using RTK-GNSS

Authors: Philipp BertholdBianca ForkelMirko Maehlisch

Abstract

Datasets are a crucial element in the development of perception algorithms. They relate sensor measurement data to annotated reference information and allow for the deduction of sensor and object characteristics. In autonomous driving, the reference data commonly consist of semantic image segmentation, point-wise associations, or bounding box annotations. The dataset proposed in this work, however, aims to dig deeper into the evaluation of measurement principles and provides scanned 3D models of all vehicles together with a pose and continuous kinematics reference obtained by RTK-GNSS. Combined, the state of the complete dynamic surrounding of the sensor vehicle is known for any point in time. Subsequent reference formats can be easily computed in user-defined granularity. This dataset involves single-object and multi-object recordings with seven target vehicles. In particular, measurement effects such as occlusion, as well as reflections, can be evaluated, as the normals of the shape of the target vehicles are known. We describe the dataset, discuss the technical background of its development, and briefly present exemplary evaluations.

Boreas Road Trip: A Multi-Sensor Autonomous Driving Dataset on Challenging Roads

The Boreas Road Trip (Boreas-RT) dataset extends the multi-season Boreas dataset to new and diverse locations that pose challenges for modern autonomous driving algorithms. Boreas-RT comprises 60 sequences collected over 9 real-world routes, totalling 643 km of driving. Each route is traversed multiple times, enabling evaluation in identical environments under varying traffic and, in some cases, weather conditions. The data collection platform includes a 5MP FLIR Blackfly S camera, a 360 degree Navtech RAS6 Doppler-enabled spinning radar, a 128-channel 360 degree Velodyne Alpha Prime lidar, an Aeva Aeries II FMCW Doppler-enabled lidar, a Silicon Sensing DMU41 inertial measurement unit, and a Dynapar wheel encoder. Centimetre-level ground truth is provided via post-processed Applanix POS LV GNSS-INS data. The dataset includes precise extrinsic and intrinsic calibrations, a publicly available development kit, and a live leaderboard for odometry and metric localization. Benchmark results show that many state-of-the-art odometry and localization algorithms overfit to simple driving environments and degrade significantly on the more challenging Boreas-RT routes. Boreas-RT provides a unified dataset for evaluating multi-modal algorithms across diverse road conditions. The dataset, leaderboard, and development kit are available at www.boreas.utias.utoronto.ca.

The Road Ahead in Autonomous Driving: The KITScenes Multimodal Dataset

Existing autonomous driving datasets have enabled major progress, but fall short in sensor fidelity, map completeness, or geographic diversity. We present KITScenes Multimodal, a European dataset built around high-fidelity sensors and maps. Our fully synchronized sensor suite combines high-resolution global-shutter cameras, long-range lidar beyond 400m, 4D imaging radar, and redundant GNSS/INS localization. Our HD maps are, to our knowledge, the most complete of any sensor dataset, validated through autonomous driving trials on open-source software. For the first time in a public dataset, all driving-relevant traffic elements, such as traffic lights, are mapped in 3D to a reprojection-accurate level with full topological connectivity. Recorded in cities with irregular street layouts and mixed traffic modes, our dataset complements existing datasets by broadening the available geographic diversity. We also introduce four benchmarks, each advancing spatial learning for embodied AI: online HD map construction, long-range depth estimation, novel view synthesis, and end-to-end driving. A2RL V\textsubscript{max}: The A2RL autonomous racing dataset for long-range, high-speed perception and multi-vehicle interaction

In autonomous driving development, a perception dataset is crucial, as it provides fundamental data for training, testing, and validating algorithms for an autonomous vehicle's multimodal perception systems. So far, most research has concentrated on providing datasets for well-structured urban environments. This work introduces the A2RL V\textsubscript{max} open-source dataset, specifically designed for perception tasks in high-speed autonomous driving and multi-vehicle interaction. The dataset was captured during the 2024 Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), held at the Yas Marina F1 Circuit, with participation from all competing teams. It contains diverse scenarios, including single-vehicle data at varying speeds, multi-vehicle sessions, and the full final four-vehicle race. The dataset contains almost 30,000 professionally annotated LiDAR point clouds, along with RADAR point clouds. In particular, it is the first large-scale dataset in autonomous racing to feature professionally annotated LiDAR point clouds, enabling deep learning-based perception research. The data is provided in a developer-friendly format, enabling easy implementation and evaluation in future research. We provide implementation and evaluation for off-the-shelf 3D detection and tracking methods. Although baseline methods show promising results for both 3D detection and tracking, specialized methods are required to address the unique challenges of high-speed autonomous driving.
