Efficient 3D Gaussian Head Avatars for Edge Devices

Generative 3D Gaussian head avatars provide high-quality, efficient rendering, but synthesising the Gaussian representation remains computationally expensive, limiting deployment on resource-constrained and edge devices. We introduce an efficient generator architecture for unconditional 3D Gaussian head synthesis, based on a parameter-efficient synthesis block and depth-wise separable convolutions while retaining style-based conditioning. Our architecture reduces generator complexity without requiring model compression or quantisation. Compared with the baseline model, our approach reduces FLOPs by 94%, parameter count by 70%, and model size by 81%, while maintaining competitive generation quality. We further demonstrate practical CPU inference and browser-based execution on mobile devices using ONNX Runtime, enabling 3D Gaussian avatar synthesis without dedicated GPU hardware or application-specific software. In addition to conventional image-quality metrics, we evaluate multi-view consistency, training cost, and deployment performance. Code, trained models, and evaluation tools will be released publicly.

Counterfactual Route Optimization for Gaussian Head Avatar Modeling

Head avatar modeling requires jointly optimizing multiple objectives with different dominant effects on geometry, appearance, and cross-view consistency. However, their relative effectiveness varies across training states, while existing pipelines typically rely on fixed loss weights or handcrafted stage-wise schedules. A central challenge is therefore to identify which optimization direction is more beneficial at each training state. We propose a counterfactual route optimization framework for Gaussian head avatar modeling, which characterizes state-dependent optimization preference from the realized effects of alternative updates rather than predefined heuristic weighting. Starting from the same training state, we perform short-horizon route-restricted lookahead over geometry, appearance, and joint update routes and evaluate their outcomes under a unified utility. The resulting counterfactual evidence is factorized into a geometry--appearance preference and a residual joint advantage, separately capturing the relative preference between individual update directions and the additional benefit of coordinated optimization. We further amortize this offline evidence into a lightweight controller that directly estimates the current optimization preference and applies bounded modulation to the training objectives during full avatar optimization. Experiments on the NeRSemble dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed design, consistently outperforming existing methods while preserving clearer local facial structures and finer details.

MegaAvatar: Controllable Talking Avatar Generation

This report presents \textbf{MegaAvatar}, a controllable talking avatar generation framework built on top of the Wan2.2-TI2V-5B model. Compared with previous talking-avatar methods that mainly rely on audio or reference-image conditioning, we introduce additional SMPL-X-derived 3D guidance, enabling global control over body pose and head motion. Specifically, we render the driving SMPL-X sequence into dense mesh frames and encode them with a lightweight 3D convolutional encoder, whose outputs are injected into the latent tokens to provide overall motion control. Furthermore, we extend Wan2.2-TI2V-5B with additional audio and face cross-attention modules to enable fine-grained expression control and preserve the input identity, respectively. In addition, we implement an audio-to-SMPL-X model to predict an SMPL-X sequence conditioned on the reference image and input audio, allowing MegaAvatar to support audio-driven inference without user-provided SMPL-X frames. Experiments show that MegaAvatar achieves high-quality talking avatar generation with controllable body and head motion, speech-synchronized facial expressions, and consistent identity preservation. MegaAvatar also supports inference with flexible resolutions and video lengths. Codes, dataset, models will be avaliable in https://github.com/Jeoyal/MegaAvatar

Learning Semantic Inpainting for Animatable Gaussian Head Avatars

We present SInGA, a novel method for learning Semantic Inpainting for animatable Gaussian head Avatars from a single image. Existing avatar approaches often rely on multi-view observations and lack effective handling of unobserved regions in single-view settings, limiting their applicability in such scenarios. To address this, we propose a semantic inpainting framework defined in UV space for completing unobserved facial regions. Our key insight lies in the structured topology of the UV representation, which provides consistent spatial correspondences and enables reliable completion of identity-specific features using the inherent symmetry cues of human faces. We extract features from observed regions and use them to complete unobserved regions. The completed representation is then used to regress Gaussian attributes, effectively performing Gaussian inpainting. In addition, instead of relying on a single Gaussian at each surface or pixel location, we stack multiple Gaussians to enhance detail. The resulting avatar generalizes across identities without requiring per-identity optimization and can be animated with driving inputs. Experimental results show that our method generates high-quality head avatars with improved completeness and identity preservation, while supporting realistic animation and consistent rendering from unobserved views.

EvolvingAvatar: Interactive 3D Head Generation That Adapts as Conversations Unfold

Interactive 3D head generation requires coordinated speaking and listening motion that responds to an evolving conversation. Existing generators use incoming observations as context but keep their parameters fixed, leaving conversational patterns unused as a learning signal. We introduce EvolvingAvatar, a causal generator that uses test-time training to adapt to user face video and dyadic audio during interaction. Its dyadic context prediction objective provides a self-supervised learning signal from audiovisual context without target motion labels at test time. Persistent fast weights accumulate these updates within each conversation to guide motion generation, while transient jaw adaptation responds to current audiovisual context. Predicted speech activity controls how persistent adaptation guides motion. We also introduce InterHead-Bench, a unified 455.95-hour benchmark built from single-view and dual-view conversation videos. Experiments show improved conversational motion statistics over strong baselines. On the hardest out-of-distribution split, generation improves as conversations unfold, reducing mismatch with recorded user-avatar expression statistics by up to 11.1% from the first interval.

PHOSA: Photorealistic 3D Sign Avatar Modeling and Benchmark

In this work, we focus on photorealistic sign avatar modeling, which is crucial for effective communication with the Deaf community and is characterized by complex hand gestures and nuanced facial expressions. To this end, we introduce MVSign, the first multi-view Chinese sign language dataset co-designed with Deaf experts, featuring diverse gestures and rich annotations. For precise SMPL-X annotation, we develop a hybrid fitting pipeline that produces accurate body, hand, and facial parameters and can also be applied to the monocular setting. Building on MVSign, we propose a decoupled sign avatar representation that isolates body, head, and hand components to capture complex articulations, together with a motion-aware sampling strategy to handle motion blur and balance gesture diversity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves high-fidelity visual results on MVSign, particularly in detailed hand and facial regions, and generalizes well to in-the-wild monocular sign language videos. Heartian: Physiology-Aware Relightable Gaussian Head Avatar

Gaussian head avatars typically model intrinsic facial appearance as temporally static, omitting subtle cardiac-induced skin-color variation. We propose Heartian, a physiology-aware modulation framework that learns cardiac-cycle-dependent per-frame albedo modulation of facial skin-region Gaussians within a relightable head avatar to encode remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) signals. Using synchronized contact PPG supervision, Heartian models the prescribed cardiac waveform as the sum of two Gaussian functions and learns per-frame spatial residuals via a lightweight MLP. Across 152 stationary recordings from UBFC-rPPG, PURE, and MMPD, attribute-space recovery of the supplied signal achieves a pooled recording-level heart-rate MAE of 0.29 bpm and MAPE of 0.38%. The signals remain detectable after rendering by benchmark rPPG methods, with the best tested configuration - a motion-augmented TS-CAN decoder pretrained on UBFC-rPPG - recovering heart rate from the rendered MMPD avatars at 0.97 bpm MAE and 1.21% MAPE. Meanwhile, Heartian maintains reconstruction quality comparable to the baseline, with negligible average PSNR degradation of 0.005 dB. Overall, our work embeds recoverable rPPG signals as controllable material attributes to subject-specific Gaussian head avatars while retaining the reconstruction quality.

Relightable 3D Avatar Reconstruction with Semantic-Adaptive Motion-Illumination Responses

Reconstructing expressive and relightable 3D head avatars from monocular videos remains challenging in computer vision, as it requires accurate modeling of both non-rigid facial motion and illumination-dependent appearance. Existing Gaussian avatar methods commonly rely on globally coupled representations, in which Gaussian primitives share a unified motion or illumination response model. Such uniform modeling neglects the distinct motion patterns and material/reflectance properties of different facial semantic regions, thereby limiting fine-grained animation accuracy and reducing relighting plausibility. To address this limitation, we propose SAMIRA, a 3D Gaussian avatar framework for semantic-adaptive motion-illumination response modeling. For motion response modeling, the Semantic-Adaptive Motion Response module rasterizes current-to-reference mesh displacements into a topology-consistent UV space and leverages facial semantics to route displacement features through semantic-specific modulators, predicting localized Gaussian geometric residuals beyond coarse mesh binding. For illumination response modeling, the Semantic-Adaptive Illumination Response module learns compact diffuse and specular response factors for each facial region, allowing Gaussians in different regions to adapt their illumination responses to novel environment lighting. These response factors are incorporated into deferred physically based shading, providing a lightweight approximation of semantic-dependent illumination effects. Extensive experiments on self-reenactment, cross-reenactment, and relighting demonstrate that SAMIRA improves both fine-grained expression reconstruction and relighting realism over existing methods.

MGAvatar: Mesh-Bound Gaussians for Head Avatar Geometry and Appearance Modeling

Accurate head modeling requires a stable yet expressive geometric representation. Existing Gaussian-based head avatars commonly rely on parametric templates (e.g., FLAME) for Gaussian initialization and deformation, but these templates lack personalized priors and struggle to represent structures such as hair and clothing. To address this issue, we propose MGAvatar, a Gaussian-mesh hybrid representation that jointly models geometry and appearance through two Gaussian-mesh binding modes. Specifically, we introduce vertex-bound Gaussians and constrain their learnable parameters, enabling progressive mesh deformation to represent complex head geometry, while a pose-dependent offset module accounts for non-rigid deformations. Once geometry is stabilized, MGAvatar switches to face-bound Gaussians for appearance modeling. To improve appearance consistency across novel poses and viewpoints, we introduce a view-conditioned neural color field that alleviates artifacts caused by independently optimized Gaussian colors. In addition, we design a Gaussian offset network to predict Gaussian offset maps in the observation space, providing greater flexibility for face-bound Gaussians to capture dynamic facial textures. Extensive experiments on multi-view and monocular videos show that MGAvatar outperforms existing methods in rendering quality, producing high-fidelity head avatars with rich texture details.

Multi-Modal Controlled Coherent Motion Generation

It is natural for humans to walk and talk simultaneously. This paper tackles the challenge of replicating such natural behaviors in 3D avatar motion generation driven by concurrent multimodal inputs, such as a text description of a man walking alongside speech audio. Existing methods, constrained by the scarcity of aligned multimodal data, typically combine motions from individual modalities sequentially or through weighted sums. However, they often result in mismatched or unrealistic movements. To overcome these limitations, we propose MOCO, a novel diffusion-based framework capable of processing multiple simultaneous inputs, including speech audio, text descriptions, and trajectory data, to generate coherent and lifelike motions without requiring aligned multimodal data. Our key innovation lies in decoupling the motion generation process. During each denoising step, the diffusion model independently generates motions for each modality from the input noise and assembles the body parts according to predefined spatial rules. The resulting combined motion is then diffused and serves as the input noise for the subsequent denoising step. This iterative approach enables each modality to refine its contribution within the context of the overall motion, progressively harmonizing movements across modalities. Consequently, the generated motions become increasingly natural and fluid with each iteration, achieving coherent and synchronized behaviors. We evaluate our approach using a purpose-built multimodal benchmark. Experimental results demonstrate that MOCO outperforms existing baselines, advancing the field of multimodal motion generation for 3D avatars.

TGRHuman: Text-Guided Realistic 3D Human Generation via Diffusion Renderer

Realistic 3D human generation plays a crucial role in many graphics applications. However, current methods still struggle to generate high-quality human geometry and texture while maintaining 3D consistency and inference efficiency. In this work, we address these limitations by introducing TGRHuman, a novel approach for generating realistic 3D humans from text. Our method decouples geometry and texture generation to alleviate the issues commonly encountered in NeRF-based methods. Instead of relying on slow, implicit score-distillation-based optimization, we directly use explicit multi-view observation generation and optimization for efficient 3D synthesis. For geometry generation, we propose a high-resolution generative module for multi-view normals together with a geometry-carving strategy that preserves view consistency and supports loose clothing. For texture generation, we produce spatially consistent RGB observations from densely sampled surrounding views using a carefully designed texture-prior acquisition strategy and a diffusion renderer, enabling detailed human texture synthesis. Experiments show that our method can generate high-quality and consistent 3D human geometry and texture efficiently. TGRHuman outperforms existing text-to-3D human methods in both geometry and texture quality.

DSAR: Dual-Stream Autoregressive Modeling of Temporal Cloth Dynamics for Photorealistic Animatable Avatars

Creating photorealistic and temporally coherent animatable human avatars from RGB videos remains challenging. Current methods struggle to capture realistic cloth dynamics, producing over-smoothed appearance or severe artifacts on out-of-distribution poses. This limitation stems from a fundamental oversight: existing approaches neglect the temporal causality inherent in cloth physics, where current states emerge from previous states through temporal evolution rather than instantaneous skeletal configurations alone. Without explicit modeling of this causal structure, networks learn pose-appearance correlations instead of motion evolution, leading to poor generalization. We introduce a dual-stream autoregressive framework that explicitly models both observable geometric information and implicit internal state. The geometric stream propagates surface displacement from the previous frame, while the state stream fuses current features with historical states retrieved from a memory bank. Motion-adaptive aggregation handles spatially-varying dynamics, and adaptive regularization balances smoothness with flexibility. Experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate significant improvements in rendering quality, temporal consistency, and generalization to motion patterns beyond training distributions, validating that dual-stream temporal modeling enables realistic cloth dynamics.

Multi-View Face and Gesture Animation with Dynamic Gaussians

Creating photorealistic 3D human avatars with realistic upper-body motion remains challenging. Existing approaches either focus on the head and overlook hand gestures, or reconstruct the full body but fail to preserve fine-grained facial fidelity and hand pose accuracy. As a result, current methods struggle to capture the subtle dynamics of facial expressions and hand gestures that are crucial for natural human communication. While methods based on full-body parametric models enable avatar reconstruction from monocular or multi-view inputs, they often lack accurate facial animation and detailed hand articulation. To address these limitations, we propose MVFGA, a novel multi-view-consistent pipeline for generating realistic upper-body avatars. Our approach models the face and hands separately and fuses them with a parametric upper-body mesh model, enabling the capture of fine-grained facial expressions and hand poses for accurate upper-body avatar reconstruction. We then splat 3D Gaussians onto the obtained mesh, enabling high-quality rendering of dynamic avatars from novel viewpoints. Furthermore, we introduce MVFGA-MoCap, a multi-view upper-body motion capture dataset featuring controlled facial expression sequences, diverse hand gestures, and free-form communication. Experiments show that MVFGA generates visually realistic avatars with high-fidelity facial expressions and hand motions, outperforming baselines for upper-body avatar animation. OASIS: Occlusion-aware Single-image Hand Avatar Reconstruction via 3D Gaussian Splatting

Single-image 3D hand avatar reconstruction is fundamentally ill-posed and particularly challenging due to limited visual evidence under severe self-occlusion and the complex pose-dependent deformation of highly articulated hands. Existing methods predominantly rely on implicit NeRF-style representations, whose volumetric fitting is computationally expensive and often struggles to preserve fine-grained hand details. In this work, we present OASIS, a tailored 3D Gaussian Splatting framework for single-image hand avatar reconstruction. To faithfully encode sparse image-specific appearance cues in single-view reconstruction, we construct geometry-aligned visual evidence tokens by explicitly aligning input image observations with 3D hand geometry and context-adaptively tokenizing the resulting visual evidence. Since severe self-occlusion makes the reliability of image evidence inherently visibility-dependent, we introduce a visibility-conditioned point-image attention to reliably transfer visual evidence to geometric tokens, yielding occlusion-aware Gaussian features for faithful and robust reconstruction. To further capture non-rigid deformation of articulated hands, we introduce a Feature-on-Mesh representation to enable Gaussian deformation to be guided by local surface stretching. Under this framework, we adopt a one-shot adaptation scheme that learns a shared hand prior from multi-identity training data and then fits it to a target image for target-specific reconstruction. Extensive experiments show that OASIS outperforms existing baselines in both visual fidelity and efficiency across challenging poses and in-the-wild scenarios, and further demonstrates strong versatility in downstream applications such as text-to-avatar generation and texture editing.

Forwardrobe: Garment-Aware Gaussian Avatars from a Single Image

Reconstructing animatable 3D human avatars from a single image remains particularly challenging for loose garments, whose geometry and motion cannot be adequately represented by body-aligned topology and skinning. We present Forwardrobe, a feed-forward framework for reconstructing garment-aware Gaussian avatars from a single image. Forwardrobe explicitly separates clothing from the body in canonical Gaussian space and equips the garment layer with continuity-aware geometry and skinning initialization, pose-conditioned non-rigid deformation, and appearance adaptation. These designs improve garment reconstruction and visual quality during animation, particularly for skirts and dresses. The separated garment layer additionally forms an independently controllable 3D asset, enabling garment editing, transfer, and 3D virtual try-on. Experiments demonstrate improved garment reconstruction quality and greater flexibility in garment manipulation compared with existing single-image avatar reconstruction methods.

S-Avatar: Diffusion-Guided Gaussian Head Avatars from a Single Image

We propose S-Avatar, a novel method for generating photorealistic 3D head avatars from a single image using a diffusion-guided 3D model generation module and strategies for animating 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). While single-image head avatar reconstruction is crucial for lifelike Virtual Reality (VR) applications, existing approaches often struggle to preserve 3D consistency under unseen viewpoints. S-Avatar addresses this limitation through a three-stage pipeline. First, a high-resolution 3DGS is synthesized directly from a single image using a diffusion-based Gaussian splat generation module. Next, the parametric head model FLAME is aligned with the generated 3DGS by optimizing its parameters and spatial transformations. Finally, to adapt the 3DGS to FLAME variations, we construct a binding template that encodes the spatial relationship between the initial splats and FLAME. The dynamic 3D head avatar can then be rendered in real time by deforming the 3DGS with the binding template. By combining diffusion-guided canonical 3DGS generation with FLAME-based control, our method achieves efficient and accurate reconstruction with enhanced 3D consistency. Evaluations on public datasets demonstrate that S-Avatar outperforms state-of-the-art methods in novel-view and expression generation, achieving superior realism and consistency. Consequently, our approach represents a significant advance in accessible avatar creation, applicable to a wide range of VR/AR applications. Split and Drive: Dual-Axis Disentanglement for Real-Time Gaussian Head Avatars

Creating photorealistic animatable head avatars from a single image remains a fundamental challenge in digital human synthesis. While recent 3D Gaussian Splatting methods have achieved promising results, they rely on external tracking pipelines whose latency is excluded from inference measurements. Furthermore, they adopt unified representations that entangle geometrically distinct facial regions, limiting both expressiveness and rendering fidelity. We propose SpiD (Split and Drive), a single-image Gaussian head avatar framework built on two disentanglement axes. The compute axis internalizes per-frame driving, eliminating external tracking dependency at inference. The feature axis decomposes the avatar into three specialized Gaussian branches, each modeling a geometrically distinct facial domain. Extensive experiments demonstrate consistently strong performance against state-of-the-art methods while achieving the fastest inference speed among all compared methods on a single GPU with the complete driving pipeline included.

4DHumanDiff: Direct Text-to-4DGS Generation for Consistent 360-Degree Dynamic Humans

Generating high-quality 360-degree dynamic human assets from text prompts is challenging. Existing methods usually synthesize monocular or multi-view videos first and then fit a 4D representation, which is expensive and often causes incomplete geometry or view-inconsistent renderings. We present 4DHumanDiff, a diffusion framework that directly generates dynamic humans represented by 4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS) from text prompts. By modeling the structured 4D representation space end-to-end, 4DHumanDiff avoids video pre-generation and per-scene reconstruction, making it better suited for view-consistent and temporally coherent asset generation. The model uses a 3D U-Net backbone with temporal attention for motion-aware generation. We further construct a large-scale text-to-4DGS dataset with 60,000 high-quality pairs, and introduce 2D regularization and training-free 4D interpolation to improve rendering quality and motion smoothness. Experiments show that 4DHumanDiff generates consistent 360-degree dynamic humans within one minute, achieves better temporal and multi-view consistency, and reduces inference time by more than 10x.

Head Avatars with Dynamic Explicit Hair

We present DynHair, a novel method for tracking and modeling dynamic hair for human head avatars. From video input, we reconstruct a dynamic head avatar with an explicit strand-based hair representation using structured 3D Gaussian Splatting. In contrast to the face region of human head avatars, which can be modeled with 3D Gaussians that are attached or generated with respect to some expressive 3D head model, hair is particularly challenging as it exhibits dynamic motion effects. Therefore, we present a novel method that models the dynamic deformations of the hair strands using a temporal network that is conditioned on angular velocity and acceleration of the head, as well as relative gravity. Specifically, an LSTM encodes the motion history and modulates per-point strand features via FiLM conditioning which further used by MLP to produce physically plausible displacements to canonical hairstyle. We jointly optimize this motion and appearance representation of the hair, with a 3DGS-based representation of the face-region, via differentiable Gaussian splatting with photometric, geometric, and physics-based supervision. As a result of our method, we retrieve hair tracking of the training video data and an animatable head avatar with controllable hair dynamics. In our experiments, we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in terms of hair dynamics, temporal consistency, and generalization across subjects.

STEER: Steerable Dyadic Head Avatars

Facial movement and expression are central to face-to-face communication, conveying turn-taking, attention, agreement, and engagement alongside speech. While speech-driven facial animation has made strong progress in lip synchronization and audio-conditioned motion generation, most methods treat conversational behavior as an emergent byproduct of audio, or expose only coarse sequence-level affect control. As a result, key non-verbal channels such as gaze contact and aversion, rhythmic head motion, and emotion remain difficult to explicitly control. We present STEER, a controllable 3D dyadic motion prior for reactive conversational head avatars. STEER factorizes conversational behavior into explicit controls for gaze, head rhythm, and emotion, allowing users to steer how an avatar listens, reacts, and engages with a conversation partner. Since temporally aligned annotations for these behaviors are not available in public dyadic corpora, we introduce a tracking and annotation pipeline that recovers behavioral pseudo-labels from in-the-wild dyadic video. A causal flow-matching transformer then learns partner-aware target motion conditioned on audio, partner motion, emotion and the proposed behavioral controls. We further embed STEER in a photorealistic avatar pipeline by extending a Universal Gaussian Head-Avatar Prior with a learned mapping from tracked parametric motion into its avatar-driving space. This enables controllable animation of high-fidelity Gaussian head avatars without re-training the underlying avatar model. STEER outperforms recent dyadic motion baselines on motion quality, dynamics, and diversity, remains competitive on partner coupling, and enables gaze, head-rhythm, and emotion edits together with an interactive live deployment. We make our code and dataset annotations available at our webpage.

FlexiAvatar: Unified 3D Gaussian Human Avatars Under Arbitrary Body Visibility

Reconstructing animatable 3D human avatars from monocular video is a fundamental problem in computer vision with broad applications in AR/VR and digital content creation. Existing approaches typically couple parametric body models with neural rendering or 3D Gaussian splatting and optimize all body regions jointly from short videos, which often degrades fidelity in the visible areas. To overcome this limitation, we introduce FlexiAvatar, a unified framework that explicitly optimizes only the visible body regions, effectively eliminating artifacts arising from unobserved limbs. Our method integrates occlusion-robust SMPL-X tracking with part-specific residual refinement to capture high-frequency geometric and appearance details. To complete entirely unseen regions (e.g., back views), we leverage a diffusion-based approach to generate texture consistent with the observed appearance. Experiments on full-body (NeuMan, ZJU-MoCap, WildAvatar), upper/half-body (talk-show clips), and head-only (INSTA) inputs show that FlexiAvatar delivers consistently higher reconstruction quality, outperforming state-of-the-art methods by an average PSNR improvement of approximately 3% across datasets. Finally, by restricting optimization to observed regions, our method reduces the effective number of Gaussians that must be optimized and rendered, leading to reduced runtime and memory overhead in partial-visibility scenarios.

RegHead: Non-Humanoid Head Blendshapes via Feed-Forward Registration

We present RegHead, a framework for constructing semantic blendshape sets for animatable non-humanoid head avatars. With a fixed expression vocabulary, semantic blendshapes provide a low-dimensional and interpretable animation interface and support cross-identity retargeting. Building such blendshape sets remains expensive because (i) expression-consistent supervision is scarce, (ii) generated 4D assets typically lack correspondence, and (iii) facial motion is highly localized. We propose (1) a large-scale dataset of non-humanoid identities paired with a shared expression vocabulary, obtained by expanding a small artist-rigged library via fine-tuned image editing; (2) a dense stochastic anchor motion representation tailored to localized facial deformations; and (3) a fast feed-forward registration model that converts unregistered expression meshes into a corresponded blendshape basis by predicting anchor-based deformations from the neutral shape. Experiments show that our approach produces higher-fidelity expression meshes than baselines, while running orders of magnitude faster than optimization. We further demonstrate real-time retargeting from human face tracking signals to non-humanoid characters, capturing both head pose and localized facial motions. Toward Inclusive Avatar Design with Limb Differences Through Artificial Intelligence

As extended reality becomes more popular for social interaction and entertainment, 3D avatars must represent the full diversity of body types. Most 3D avatar systems only support normative bodies and do not accurately depict people with limb differences, amputations, or other morphological variations. This paper reviews emerging technical approaches for inclusive 3D avatar customization for this group and current guidelines that promote respectful and accurate representation. We highlight persistent challenges, including the scarcity of diverse datasets and the limitations in animation for non-normative anatomies. This paper positions artificial intelligence as a promising path to overcoming these limitations and advancing inclusive 3D avatar generation.

How to Build Digital Humans? From Priors to Photorealistic Avatars

This state-of-the-art report provides an overview of controllable 3D human avatar creation. We describe current 3D avatar systems, which typically consist of three stages: (i) learning priors of human appearance and motion, (ii) creating a personalized avatar, and (iii) animating the avatar. To limit the scope, we focus on the prior learning and avatar creation stages. We define current avatar representations and introduce a taxonomy that categorizes existing work along multiple axes, including body regions and employed priors. We review methods for full-body and head avatars, as well as layered representations that decompose the body into components such as hands, hair, and garments. Finally, we outline common underlying principles, reference key literature for newcomers, and discuss open challenges and future research directions.

FFAvatar: Feed-Forward 4D Head Avatar Reconstruction from Sparse Portrait Images

We present FFAvatar, a Transformer-based 3D Gaussian framework for fast construction of high-quality and animatable 4D head avatars from one or more reference portrait images. Unlike existing feed-forward approaches that require a fixed number of input views, FFAvatar supports incremental reconstruction, progressively refining the avatar representation as additional reference images become available. At the core of our method is an alternating attention mechanism that disentangles identity appearance from expression and viewpoint variations, enabling the reconstruction of a canonical 3D appearance that remains consistent across poses and facial expressions. To balance visual fidelity and computational efficiency, we introduce a sparse-to-dense learning paradigm. Coarse appearance features are first learned using sparse primitives anchored to the FLAME vertex level and are subsequently densified in the UV domain to capture fine-grained geometric and texture details. We further propose a plug-and-play motion refinement module that enables subject-specific dynamic personalization by modeling residual motion beyond parametric deformation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FFAvatar efficiently produces high-fidelity and controllable 4D head avatars, achieving superior flexibility, driving efficiency, and identity-consistent rendering across diverse expressions and viewpoints.

FiCA: Feed-forward instant Gaussian Codec Avatars from a Single Portrait Image

We introduce FiCA, a Feed-forward, instant Gaussian Codec Avatar generation pipeline that creates lifelike avatars from a single portrait image. Generating a photorealistic and drivable avatar from just a single image is significantly challenging due to the limited visual information available to accurately infer the 3D appearance and geometry of human heads. To address this, we develop a novel system that combines human-centric vision foundation models with a diffusion model. This system is designed to fully exploit partial visual observations to generate lifelike human avatars. Our proposed diffusion model learns a generative mapping from these partial observations to complete and authentic 3D mesh reconstruction. Additionally, we introduce a feed-forward mesh refinement network that enhances the fidelity and identity preservation of the generated avatars, eliminating the need for person-specific test-time optimization. By leveraging a universal prior model that decodes a generated mesh into a set of 3D Gaussians, we generate a photorealistic 3D Gaussian avatar, capable of being driven with novel expressions in real-time. Our experiments demonstrate that the avatars generated by our feed-forward approach faithfully represent diverse identities and surpass the visual quality of avatars produced by recent competing methods.

Generative Relightable Avatars

We present Generative Relightable Avatars (GRA), a person-specific method for photorealistic free-view rendering and environment-map relighting of full-body humans. We postulate that modeling fine-grained appearance details is inherently a one-to-many problem that can benefit from a generative formulation. In contrast to fully regressive relightable avatar methods, GRA follows a hybrid approach that combines controllable, physics-grounded relighting with probabilistic refinement. Starting from a tracked animated mesh, we optimize material parameters in UV-space and render a coarse relit appearance under a target HDR environment map. Next, we refine the textures with a feed-forward model to capture pose-dependent texture dynamics and illumination effects beyond simplified reflectance assumptions. Finally, a fine-tuned video-to-video diffusion model transforms the physically grounded renderings into temporally coherent, high-detail videos while preserving 3D control, with an error-recycling strategy for generating long videos. Experimental evaluations demonstrate our method's improved perceptual quality over prior relightable avatar baselines. Project Page: https://vcai.mpi-inf.mpg.de/projects/GRA/

SpatialAvatar-0: High-Quality 4D Head Avatar with Multi-Stage Reconstruction

High-quality 4D head avatars from one or a few source portraits are central to telepresence, AR/VR, and digital-human interaction. 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has emerged as the dominant representation, with two complementary regimes (generalizable feed-forward predictors and per-subject refiners) maturing in parallel. However, existing feed-forward predictors are trained on a single dataset family with a hard-coded source count, inheriting the corresponding domain bias. Per-subject refiners require 300K--600K iterations and rely on adaptive densification that destroys upstream Gaussian layouts, preventing the two regimes from sharing a representation end-to-end. To bridge both regimes we propose SpatialAvatar-0 on a shared FLAME-mesh-bound Gaussian representation: a feed-forward generator with a parameter-free K-source mean-pool and a monocular-temporal to multi-view-spatial two-phase schedule that anchors against identity-prior collapse onto the smaller multi-view set. We further introduce a 10K-iter layout-preserving per-subject refinement loop that freezes the FLAME-binding and Gaussian count and replaces densification with a three-component anti-spike regularization. On VFHQ/HDTF cross-domain zero-shot we surpass the in-domain leader GAGAvatar by +1.5 dB PSNR despite never training on either test domain, and on the SplattingAvatar monocular benchmark we lead every reported metric, surpassing the 300K-iter GeoAvatar by +1.3 dB PSNR at up to 60x shorter per-subject schedule than common SOTA baselines. Self-Learning Expression Deformations for Data-Efficient Gaussian Avatars

Modeling dynamic facial expressions using 3D Gaussian representations remains challenging due to their unstructured nature. Conventional Gaussian avatar pipelines require extensive multiview and sequential expression data, limiting scalability and accessibility. In this work, we introduce Self-Adaptive Gaussian Expression (SAGE), a framework for self-learning expression-induced Gaussian deformations that enables high-fidelity, animatable avatars from minimal input data. Our method jointly optimizes 2D Gaussian surfels and a Signed Distance Field (SDF) to enforce compact, surface-aligned Gaussian distributions, while a self-supervised expression learning phase replaces long training sequences with geometric and appearance consistency constraints. This design allows flexible deployment across multiple reconstruction regimes: in the multiview setting, only a single frame (timestep) is required instead of thousands; in the monocular setting, only head rotations are needed without expression sequences; and in the one-shot setting, no pretraining or priors are necessary. Experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves reconstruction and animation quality comparable to state-of-the-art methods, while reducing data requirements by several orders of magnitude. Our results highlight the potential of self-supervised Gaussian deformation learning as a step toward accessible, data-efficient avatar creation.
