Overview

The field estimates a hand’s 3D articulation, shape, and sometimes motion in camera or world coordinates, supporting applications such as interaction analysis, sign-language capture, and robot teleoperation. Common approaches combine image or depth features with parametric hand models, transformers, geometric and kinematic constraints, and temporal or generative motion priors; some also fuse multiple views, inertial sensors, or electromyography. Evaluation spans benchmarks such as FreiHAND, InterHand2.6M, DexYCB, HO3D, HOT3D, and ARCTIC, covering single-image pose, egocentric video, and hand-object interaction. Persistent challenges include occlusion and hands leaving the view, reliable metric scale and camera-motion recovery, and generalization from limited annotations to varied real-world settings.

Enhancing Hands in 3D Whole-Body Pose Estimation with Conditional Hands Modulator

Accurately recovering hand poses within the body context remains a major challenge in 3D whole-body pose estimation. This difficulty arises from a fundamental supervision gap: whole-body pose estimators are trained on full-body datasets with limited hand diversity, while hand-only estimators, trained on hand-centric datasets, excel at detailed finger articulation but lack global body awareness. To address this, we propose Hand4Whole++, a modular framework that leverages the strengths of both pre-trained whole-body and hand pose estimators. We introduce CHAM (Conditional Hands Modulator), a lightweight module that modulates the whole-body feature stream using hand-specific features extracted from a pre-trained hand pose estimator. This modulation enables the whole-body model to predict wrist orientations that are both accurate and coherent with the upper-body kinematic structure, without retraining the full-body model. In parallel, we directly incorporate finger articulations and hand shapes predicted by the hand pose estimator, aligning them to the full-body mesh via differentiable rigid alignment. This design allows Hand4Whole++ to combine globally consistent body reasoning with fine-grained hand detail. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Hand4Whole++ substantially improves hand accuracy and enhances overall full-body pose quality.

DexEMG: Towards Dexterous Teleoperation System via EMG2Pose Generalization

High-fidelity teleoperation of dexterous robotic hands is essential for bringing robots into unstructured domestic environments. However, existing teleoperation systems often face a trade-off between performance and portability: vision-based capture systems are constrained by costs and line-of-sight requirements, while mechanical exoskeletons are bulky and physically restrictive. In this paper, we present DexEMG, a lightweight and cost-effective teleoperation system leveraging surface electromyography (sEMG) to bridge the gap between human intent and robotic execution. We first collect a synchronized dataset of sEMG signals and hand poses via a MoCap glove to train EMG2Pose, a neural network capable of continuously predicting hand kinematics directly from muscle activity. To ensure seamless control, we develop a robust hand retargeting algorithm that maps the predicted poses onto a multi-fingered dexterous hand in real-time. Experimental results demonstrate that DexEMG achieves high precision in diverse teleoperation tasks. Notably, our system exhibits strong generalization capabilities across novel objects and complex environments without the need for intensive individual-specific recalibration. This work offers a scalable and intuitive interface for both general-purpose robotic manipulation and assistive technologies.

WHOLE: World-Grounded Hand-Object Lifted from Egocentric Videos

Egocentric manipulation videos are highly challenging due to severe occlusions during interactions and frequent object entries and exits from the camera view as the person moves. Current methods typically focus on recovering either hand or object pose in isolation, but both struggle during interactions and fail to handle out-of-sight cases. Moreover, their independent predictions often lead to inconsistent hand-object relations. We introduce WHOLE, a method that holistically reconstructs hand and object motion in world space from egocentric videos given object templates. Our key insight is to learn a generative prior over hand-object motion to jointly reason about their interactions. At test time, the pretrained prior is guided to generate trajectories that conform to the video observations. This joint generative reconstruction substantially outperforms approaches that process hands and objects separately followed by post-processing. WHOLE achieves state-of-the-art performance on hand motion estimation, 6D object pose estimation, and their relative interaction reconstruction. Project website: https://judyye.github.io/whole-www

UniHand: A Unified Model for Diverse Controlled 4D Hand Motion Modeling

Hand motion plays a central role in human interaction, yet modeling realistic 4D hand motion (i.e., 3D hand pose sequences over time) remains challenging. Research in this area is typically divided into two tasks: (1) Estimation approaches reconstruct precise motion from visual observations, but often fail under hand occlusion or absence; (2) Generation approaches focus on synthesizing hand poses by exploiting generative priors under multi-modal structured inputs and infilling motion from incomplete sequences. However, this separation not only limits the effective use of heterogeneous condition signals that frequently arise in practice, but also prevents knowledge transfer between the two tasks. We present UniHand, a unified diffusion-based framework that formulates both estimation and generation as conditional motion synthesis. UniHand integrates heterogeneous inputs by embedding structured signals into a shared latent space through a joint variational autoencoder, which aligns conditions such as MANO parameters and 2D skeletons. Visual observations are encoded with a frozen vision backbone, while a dedicated hand perceptron extracts hand-specific cues directly from image features, removing the need for complex detection and cropping pipelines. A latent diffusion model then synthesizes consistent motion sequences from these diverse conditions. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that UniHand delivers robust and accurate hand motion modeling, maintaining performance under severe occlusions and temporally incomplete inputs.

TrackStudio: An Integrated Toolkit for Markerless Tracking

Markerless motion tracking has advanced rapidly in the past 10 years and currently offers powerful opportunities for behavioural, clinical, and biomechanical research. While several specialised toolkits provide high performance for specific tasks, using existing tools still requires substantial technical expertise. There remains a gap in accessible, integrated solutions that deliver sufficient tracking for non-experts across diverse settings. TrackStudio was developed to address this gap by combining established open-source tools into a single, modular, GUI-based pipeline that works out of the box. It provides video recording preprocessing, recording synchronisation, automatic 2D and 3D pose estimation, and visualisation without requiring any programming skills. We supply a user guide with practical advice for video acquisition, camera calibration, video synchronisation, and experimental setup, alongside documentation of common pitfalls and how to avoid them. To validate the toolkit, we tested its performance across three environments using either low-cost webcams or high-resolution cameras, including challenging conditions for body position, lighting, space, and obstructions. Across 76 participants, average inter-frame correlations exceeded 0.98 and average triangulation errors remained low (<13.6mm for hand tracking), demonstrating stable and consistent tracking. We further show that the same pipeline can be extended beyond hand tracking to other body and face regions. TrackStudio provides a practical, accessible route into markerless tracking for researchers or laypeople who need reliable performance without specialist expertise.

Affordance-Guided Diffusion Prior for 3D Hand Reconstruction

How can we reconstruct 3D hand poses when large portions of the hand are heavily occluded by itself or by objects? Humans often resolve such ambiguities by leveraging contextual knowledge -- such as affordances, where an object's shape and function suggest how the object is typically grasped. Inspired by this observation, we propose a generative prior for hand pose refinement guided by affordance-aware textual descriptions of hand-object interactions (HOI). Our method employs a diffusion-based generative model that learns the distribution of plausible hand poses conditioned on affordance descriptions, which are inferred from a large vision-language model (VLM). This enables the refinement of occluded regions into more accurate and functionally coherent hand poses. Extensive experiments on HOGraspNet, a 3D hand-affordance dataset with severe occlusions, demonstrate that our affordance-guided refinement significantly improves hand pose estimation over both recent regression methods and diffusion-based refinement lacking contextual reasoning.

Enhancing Monocular 3D Hand Reconstruction with Learned Texture Priors

We revisit the role of texture in monocular 3D hand reconstruction, not as an afterthought for photorealism, but as a dense, spatially grounded cue that can actively support pose and shape estimation. Our observation is simple: even in high-performing models, the overlay between predicted hand geometry and image appearance is often imperfect, suggesting that texture alignment may be an underused supervisory signal. We propose a lightweight texture module that embeds per-pixel observations into UV texture space and enables a novel dense alignment loss between predicted and observed hand appearances. Our approach assumes access to a differentiable rendering pipeline and a model that maps images to 3D hand meshes with known topology, allowing us to back-project a textured hand onto the image and perform pixel-based alignment. The module is self-contained and easily pluggable into existing reconstruction pipelines. To isolate and highlight the value of texture-guided supervision, we augment HaMeR, a high-performing yet unadorned transformer architecture for 3D hand pose estimation. The resulting system improves both accuracy and realism, demonstrating the value of appearance-guided alignment in hand reconstruction.

Occlusion-Aware 3D Hand-Object Pose Estimation with Masked AutoEncoders

Hand-object pose estimation from monocular RGB images remains a significant challenge mainly due to the severe occlusions inherent in hand-object interactions. Existing methods do not sufficiently explore global structural perception and reasoning, which limits their effectiveness in handling occluded hand-object interactions. To address this challenge, we propose an occlusion-aware hand-object pose estimation method based on masked autoencoders, termed as HOMAE. Specifically, we propose a target-focused masking strategy that imposes structured occlusion on regions of hand-object interaction, encouraging the model to learn context-aware features and reason about the occluded structures. We further integrate multi-scale features extracted from the decoder to predict a signed distance field (SDF), capturing both global context and fine-grained geometry. To enhance geometric perception, we combine the implicit SDF with an explicit point cloud derived from the SDF, leveraging the complementary strengths of both representations. This fusion enables more robust handling of occluded regions by combining the global context from the SDF with the precise local geometry provided by the point cloud. Extensive experiments on challenging DexYCB and HO3Dv2 benchmarks demonstrate that HOMAE achieves state-of-the-art performance in hand-object pose estimation. We will release our code and model.

Multi-view Hand Reconstruction with a Point-Embedded Transformer

This work introduces a novel and generalizable multi-view Hand Mesh Reconstruction (HMR) model, named POEM, designed for practical use in real-world hand motion capture scenarios. The advances of the POEM model consist of two main aspects. First, concerning the modeling of the problem, we propose embedding a static basis point within the multi-view stereo space. A point represents a natural form of 3D information and serves as an ideal medium for fusing features across different views, given its varied projections across these views. Consequently, our method harnesses a simple yet effective idea: a complex 3D hand mesh can be represented by a set of 3D basis points that 1) are embedded in the multi-view stereo, 2) carry features from the multi-view images, and 3) encompass the hand in it. The second advance lies in the training strategy. We utilize a combination of five large-scale multi-view datasets and employ randomization in the number, order, and poses of the cameras. By processing such a vast amount of data and a diverse array of camera configurations, our model demonstrates notable generalizability in the real-world applications. As a result, POEM presents a highly practical, plug-and-play solution that enables user-friendly, cost-effective multi-view motion capture for both left and right hands. The model and source codes are available at https://github.com/JubSteven/POEM-v2.
