Fringe Projection Profilometry
Overview
Fringe projection profilometry measures surface shape by projecting fringe patterns, decoding their phase in camera images, and triangulating depth using calibrated projector-camera geometry. Common methods use phase shifting and multiple fringe frequencies to unwrap phase, while newer approaches estimate phase from single-shot or composite patterns using learned models with physical constraints. Work also improves calibration, color and reflective-surface measurement, pose tracking, and uncertainty estimates for applications such as robotics and tactile sensing. A central challenge is balancing speed and robustness: learned systems can exploit object-shape cues instead of fringe information, while phase errors, optical distortions, and calibration quality still limit accuracy in difficult settings.
