Historical Document Analysis
Overview
The field develops methods for turning historical pages, manuscripts, newspapers, and diagrams into searchable, interpretable evidence while preserving their visual and textual context. Common approaches include OCR and handwriting recognition, layout and reading-order reconstruction, image classification and paleographic analysis, and language models for entity extraction, semantic search, question answering, and knowledge-graph construction. Benchmarks increasingly test multilingual and long-document settings, noisy OCR, rare scripts, and generalization to unseen pages or collections, often with expert annotation and human review. A central challenge is ensuring that fluent model outputs are grounded in the source and do not introduce anachronistic bias, while balancing accuracy, efficiency, and reliability across diverse materials.
