Open-Ended Generation
Overview
Open-ended generation studies how AI systems produce useful, coherent responses to prompts with many plausible answers, including writing, advice, research, and creative tasks. Approaches include decoding controls for diversity, iterative planning and reflection, and post-training with preferences, rubrics, reinforcement learning, or self-play. Evaluation combines human judgments with constraint-based benchmarks, automated judges, and comparisons to human response distributions to assess quality, factual completeness, diversity, and bias. A central tension is that plausible outputs can still be repetitive or narrow, while imperfect reward models and judges make it difficult to select better responses or encourage creativity without losing coherence and reliability.
