OCA: ODE-Driven Cross-Attention for Image-to-Point-Cloud Registration

Cross-attention is a crucial component in learning-based image-to-point-cloud (I2P) registration. Although existing cross-attention mechanisms have achieved promising progress, attention ambiguity remains a fundamental challenge that hinders the learning of discriminative 2D-3D correspondences. To address this problem, we revisit cross-attention and establish ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to model the ideal I2P feature interaction. Based on this formulation, we develop an ODE-driven cross-attention (OCA) module that refines feature representations and attention matrices through ODEs. In practice, OCA can be seamlessly integrated into existing I2P registration frameworks. To validate its effectiveness, we incorporate OCA into five state-of-the-art baselines and evaluate on four public benchmark datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that OCA improves registration recall by up to 5%, 9%, and 15% under the standard, fine-tuning, and zero-shot settings, respectively.

GRIP: Gaussian Rendering as a Cross-Modal Bridge for Image-to-Point Cloud Registration

This paper introduces GRIP, a pose-conditioned refinement framework for pixel-to-point matching and 2D to 3D registration. Given an initial coarse pose estimate, GRIP addresses the structural mismatch between grid based image descriptors and unordered point cloud descriptors by softly rendering learned 3D point features onto the image grid through Gaussian feature splatting. The rendered point derived feature map is then fused with image features by a pixel aligned transformer, enabling visual semantic and geometric cues to interact in a shared 2D representation. The refined features are decoded and propagated to finer resolutions for dense correspondence estimation and final pose refinement. Experiments on RGB D Scenes V2 and 7 Scenes demonstrate state of the art inlier ratio and competitive registration recall, with stronger performance under stricter evaluation thresholds.

Mask 2D-3D: Adaptive Dual-Masked Autoencoder Network for Image-to-Point Cloud Registration

Detection-free methods for image-to-point cloud registration are prone to erroneous correspondences caused by domain and modality discrepancies, limited sensitivity of feature extractors, and the presence of non-overlapping regions. The Masked Autoencoder (MAE) has shown strong performance in visual representation for images and point clouds. It may be helpful to apply this approach to image-to-point cloud registration, a task that requires unified feature extraction and accurate cross-modal correspondences. Standard MAE's random masking may overlook key regions due to limited camera views, reducing registration effectiveness. To address this, we propose the Intermodal Dual-MAE Framework (ID-MAE) with a Similarity-based RL Masking Strategy (SRLM), which adaptively masks informative positions by leveraging cross-modal similarity and reinforcement learning, thus narrowing the modality gap. Our method enhances cross-modal representation learning by enforcing representation consistency during feature extraction, thereby enabling more reliable 2D-3D correspondence estimation. Experiments on RGB-D Scenes v2 and 7-Scenes benchmarks show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in image-to-point cloud registration.

DRS-VPT: Directly Relocalizing in a Scan with Vision Point Transformers

We present DRS-VPT, a feed-forward transformer architecture for foundational image-to-scan registration. Given query images and a reference 3D point cloud, the model predicts the scan pose and point map alongside the poses and point maps of each camera, all expressed in the first camera's frame. It additionally predicts a coarse-to- fine pyramid of per-point and per-pixel features for direct reprojective alignment of the scan to the first image. This formulation unifies downstream tasks such as camera-LiDAR calibration in autonomous driving and indoor camera-to-map relocalization. A single DRS-VPT model achieves state-of-the-art performance for image-to-LiDAR registration in autonomous driving, competitive indoor relocalization without training map-specific weights, and strong zero-shot transfer to unseen environments. We also show qualitatively that the model learns complex scan-to-image projection properties such as occlusion of back-facing points.

Accurate Reconstruction of Gas Turbine Blade Geometry Using 3D/2D Rigid Registration and CT View Optimization

Non-destructive X-ray and computed tomography (CT) testing are essential for ensuring the dimensional accuracy of manufactured components with complex internal structures, such as the cooling channels in gas turbine blades, which directly affect thermal performance and service life. This study presents a multipart 3D-2D rigid registration approach for aligning CAD models with X-ray projections as an alternative to CT reconstruction for part inspection and measurement. A greedy registration algorithm sequentially aligns the blade's exterior before registering its internal components by maximizing the mutual information between simulated and acquired X-ray images. This stepwise approach reduces problem complexity and improves alignment accuracy. View angles are optimized using a greedy method that iteratively selects angles to minimize dimensional measurement errors. The results indicate that a small number of oblique views provides the best accuracy, although a broad range of angles yields acceptable results. The method achieves subpixel registration accuracy, with errors below one-fifth of the magnified detector-pixel pitch. Image noise and defects reduce registration precision, but direct registration in projection space mitigates these effects compared with CT reconstruction. Appropriate view selection can therefore preserve acceptable subpixel accuracy in the presence of image noise and defects.

Ex-Sim(3)-Reg: 2D-3D Correspondence Pruning via Extended Sim(3) Registration

Learning-based image-to-point-cloud (I2P) registration has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Nevertheless, existing methods still struggle with severe outliers under challenging scenarios with unseen, low-inlier, or distorted cases. A fast and robust 2D-3D correspondence pruning method is therefore highly desirable. Recently, a promising scheme lifts 2D-3D correspondences to 3D-3D correspondences using depth priors, casting correspondence pruning as a Sim(3) registration problem. However, depth priors estimated from monocular images are inherently noisy, which undermines the reliability of this scheme. In this paper, to explicitly model non-negligible depth noise, we reformulate correspondence pruning as an extended Sim(3) registration problem and propose a simple yet effective pruning algorithm termed Ex-Sim(3)-Reg. We further provide a theoretical analysis to justify the effectiveness of our method. Extensive experiments on the 7-Scenes, RGBD-V2, ScanNet, and TUM datasets demonstrate that Ex-Sim(3)-Reg achieves up to 24.7% improvement in registration recall over state-of-the-art baseline methods. DMM-Align: Closed-Loop Optimization for 2D-3D Registration with Dual-Role Diffusion

2D-3D registration remains brittle in challenging scenarios such as low overlap, occlusion, repetitive structures, and severe cross-modal ambiguity. A key reason is that existing methods improve representation learning, correspondence estimation, or pose computation in isolation, while the dominant failure mode is inherently cross-level, where errors propagate between features, correspondences, and pose. To address this limitation, we propose DMM-Align: Diffusion-based Matching Matrix Alignment, a closed-loop framework that couples correspondence refinement, pose estimation, and representation learning through a shared differentiable geometric state. Our method leverages diffusion in two coordinated roles: a geometry-aware diffusion process refines the soft matching matrix for robust correspondence estimation, while a geometry-conditioned diffusion teacher injects pose-induced supervision back into feature learning. These processes are connected via a differentiable geometric hinge that converts correspondences into a global pose and exposes geometric inconsistency to upstream modules. Extensive experiments on 7-Scenes and RGB-D Scenes V2 demonstrate that DMM-Align consistently outperforms strong baselines, especially under low-overlap and heavy-occlusion conditions, highlighting the effectiveness of closed-loop geometric feedback for robust 2D-3D registration.

GeoPose: Patient-agnostic CTA-to-DSA registration through projection-space calibration

Aligning intraoperative biplanar digital subtraction angiography (DSA) to pre-procedural computed tomography angiography (CTA) requires rapid and accurate 3D-to-2D registration. Optimization-based methods are sensitive to initialization and may require hundreds of iterations, whereas learning-based approaches commonly rely on patient-specific training. We propose GeoPose, a population-trained framework that estimates the C-arm pose in a learned canonical frame and transfers it to the native frame of an unseen CTA through projection-space calibration and transform composition. A population-trained residual network refines the pose, followed optionally by low-budget image-driven optimization. GeoPose requires neither patient-specific adaptation nor explicit inter-volume preregistration. On 80 DSA observations from 20 held-out patients, optimization-free GeoPose achieved a carotid mean projected centerline distance (mPCD) of 5.8 mm and a clDice of 0.45, compared with 14.5 mm and 0.28 for the best-performing baseline, while requiring only 0.15 s. After 25 optimization iterations, GeoPose reached an mPCD of 4.6 mm and a clDice of 0.58 in approximately two seconds. Under the same budget, native-initialized optimization achieved 14.6 mm and 0.15, respectively. GeoPose thus provides rapid native-frame registration with fixed population-level weights and the geometric correspondence required for downstream biplanar 3D vascular reconstruction.

Patient-Agnostic Synthetic Pretraining for Efficient Patient-Specific Intraoperative 2D/3D Registration

Intraoperative 2D/3D registration aligns preoperative CT volumes with intraoperative X-ray or fluoroscopic images and is essential for image-guided interventions. Recent learning-based and differentiable registration methods have shown promising accuracy, especially in patient-specific settings where abundant digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) can be synthesized from the target CT. However, training a separate patient-specific model from scratch for every new patient is computationally inefficient and limits practical deployment. In this work, we propose an efficient patient-specific 2D/3D registration framework based on patient-agnostic synthetic pretraining and spherical similarity learning. The model is first pretrained on synthetic DRRs generated from multiple CT volumes to learn transferable pose-sensitive representations, and is then adapted to a new patient using only a limited number of synthetic projections from the target CT. To improve synthetic-to-real robustness without requiring anatomical labels, we introduce a segmentation-free domain randomization strategy that perturbs image intensity, projection physics, field-of-view, occlusion, and fluoroscopic artifacts. The adapted model provides an initial pose estimate, which is further refined using spherical similarity learning and differentiable Levenberg-Marquardt optimization. Experiments on multiple anatomical datasets evaluate whether patient-agnostic synthetic pretraining can improve the efficiency of patient-specific registration, with particular focus on the trade-off between adaptation cost and registration accuracy. The results demonstrate that patient-agnostic synthetic pretraining can significantly reduce patient-specific training requirements while preserving accurate intraoperative 2D/3D registration.

Learning Dense 2D-3D Correspondence for X-ray-to-CT Registration of Knee Bones

Recovering the 6-DoF pose of the knee bones from a plain radiograph, given the patient's segmented pre-operative CT, turns a routine low-dose image into a quantitative measurement of joint geometry, without the added dose of a repeat CT or a fixed biplanar rig. Classic solutions align a rendered bone silhouette to image edges; recent alternatives refine pose by backpropagating an image-similarity loss through a differentiable X-ray renderer. Both operate one patient at a time and are fragile under a single view. Silhouettes are depth-ambiguous, and differentiable-rendering refinement has a narrow capture range at substantial per-iteration cost. We instead learn an amortized, subject-agnostic dense 2D-3D correspondence, supervised solely by projection geometry. One shared-weight model per bone, trained across 758 patients, registers patients unseen during training. The pose then follows in closed form from a global, initialization-free, render-free PnP+RANSAC solve. Because X-ray formation is transmissive, our correspondence target is transmission-aware rather than tied to a single surface. Though trained only to register, the representation is anatomically semantic: a simple classifier reads a landmark's anatomical region from its embedding across held-out patients, and the same features separate the knee's bones into a 2D-3D-consistent identity learned without any bone label. On a large single-institution cohort the model generalizes well to held-out patients.

Vis2Reg: Visibility-Aware Landmark-Free Geometric 3D--2D Registration for Liver Laparoscopy

Accurate 3D--2D liver registration, which aligns preoperative 3D models to partial, view-dependent intraoperative surface observations, is critical for AR-guided laparoscopic surgery but remains challenging due to severe occlusion, limited visibility, and the lack of 3D ground-truth supervision. Existing landmark-free approaches perform partial-to-complete geometric alignment, yet robust self-supervision under extreme partial visibility remains difficult. We propose Vis2Reg, a visibility-aware registration framework that explicitly constrains deformation using mask-consistent visible regions. We introduce a visibility-aware self-supervision that derives a visible-domain 3D supervision signal from intraoperative masks, enabled by differentiable point rasterization and mask-guided back-projection. This formulation improves robustness under severe occlusion while maintaining fully self-supervised learning. Vis2Reg combines a robust geometric rigid initialization module with an implicit neural deformation field for stable alignment. Vis2Reg achieves a Dice score of 92.6% and a Chamfer Distance of 1.43 mm on real intraoperative datasets, with 111 ms per-frame inference time, demonstrating both accuracy and practical efficiency.

LayersReg: A Layer-by-Layer Progressive Regressor for Reliable Intraoperative 3D/2D Registration

3D/2D registration serves as a cornerstone technique in surgical navigation. Traditional iterative optimization algorithms suffer from low efficiency and high failure rates in intraoperative settings. Deep learning-based methods reformulate registration from iterative optimization to a regression problem that maps image appearance features to spatial pose, typically achieving improved real-time performance and accuracy. However, such learnable methods are confined to memory-driven retrieval of specific pose features rather than understanding the task of image alignment itself, which limits their generalization in complex scenarios. We propose LayersReg, a pioneering regression paradigm that endows the model with 3D anatomical awareness and searches for the correct pose in a progressive, layer-by-layer manner. Inspired by the iterative pose-searching optimization criterion of classical registration, LayersReg searches for correlations between the moving and fixed images in feature space, capturing the trend of pixel flow and thereby converging iteratively toward the correct spatial pose transformation. We further design a coupling of node-wise regression with the progressive registration framework to enhance the model's perception of spatial pose changes. Experimental results demonstrate that under large offsets and multimodality conditions, LayersReg achieves high accuracy on both X-ray/CT registration (0.68°, 1.41 mm) and slice localization (0.73°, 1.55 mm) tasks, outperforming existing state-of-the-art methods while meeting the intraoperative demands for precision and real-time capability.

DreamReg: Belief-Driven World Model for 2D-3D Ultrasound Registration

Ultrasound (US) is widely used for surgical navigation, yet real-time registration between intraoperative 2D slices and preoperative 3D volumes remains challenging due to partial observability, speckle noise, and the action-dependent US acquisition. Existing methods are one-shot or short-horizon, making it hard for them to gather evidence over time or capture how surgeons adjust probe motion based on on-screen feedback. We propose DreamReg, a belief-driven world-model framework that formulates 2D-3D registration as belief updating over rigid transformations. DreamReg maintains a latent belief state that summarizes past observations and poses information, and continuously refines the transformation through learned dynamics as new slices arrive. During training, DreamReg is exposed to probe-motion trajectories that mimic clinical scanning behavior and learns to update its belief by conditioning pose refinement on the current US observation. During inference, DreamReg refines registration via internal imagination: it rolls out the learned world model to simulate candidate probe motions and their predicted observations, and integrates these imagined outcomes to converge to an accurate rigid transformation. Experiments on CAMUS and u-RegPro datasets demonstrate improved robustness and competitive registration accuracy for real-time guidance compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Electromagnetic Navigation for Femoral Osteotomy Using High-Accuracy X-ray-to-CT Registration

Accurate execution of preoperative plans in corrective femoral osteotomies remains challenging. Current techniques are limited by variable accuracy, invasiveness, and radiation exposure, with free-hand methods and patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) often requiring >30 and >6 fluoroscopic images, respectively. We present an integrated, electromagnetic tracking (EMT)-based navigation system for femoral osteotomies that minimizes dissection and intraoperative fluoroscopy. The system couples CT-based preoperative planning with one-time intraoperative C-arm calibration and accurate X-ray-to-CT registration from two fluoroscopic images acquired at initialization. This enables real-time, fluoroscopy-free EMT navigation of the saw blade and bone fragments relative to the preoperative plan, and is compatible with uniplanar and biplanar osteotomies. In a feasibility study using 18 synthetic femora, EMT guidance significantly outperformed free-hand execution in total angular error ((3.05±0.75)∘(3.05 \pm 0.75)^\circ vs.\ (6.32±2.36)∘(6.32 \pm 2.36)^\circ, p=0.031p=0.031), assuming the same minimal surgical exposure for both. No EMT-guided trials exceeded the >5° clinical threshold, whereas free-hand produced 4 outliers of 6 trials. The system achieved statistical equivalence (±2∘\pm 2^\circ, ±2,mm\pm 2,\text{mm}) to PSI for total angular (p≤0.02p \le 0.02) and total translational (p=0.048p=0.048) errors, with no significant differences in user questionnaire scores. By transferring preoperative plans using only two fluoroscopic images while matching PSI accuracy without additional surgical exposure, the proposed system motivates subsequent cadaveric and clinical validation.

UniCorrn: Unified Correspondence Transformer Across 2D and 3D

Visual correspondence across image-to-image (2D-2D), image-to-point cloud (2D-3D), and point cloud-to-point cloud (3D-3D) geometric matching forms the foundation for numerous 3D vision tasks. Despite sharing a similar problem structure, current methods use task-specific designs with separate models for each modality combination. We present UniCorrn, the first correspondence model with shared weights that unifies geometric matching across all three tasks. Our key insight is that Transformer attention naturally captures cross-modal feature similarity. We propose a dual-stream decoder that maintains separate appearance and positional feature streams. This design enables end-to-end learning through stack-able layers while supporting flexible query-based correspondence estimation across heterogeneous modalities. Our architecture employs modality-specific backbones followed by shared encoder and decoder components, trained jointly on diverse data combining pseudo point clouds from depth maps with real 3D correspondence annotations. UniCorrn achieves competitive performance on 2D-2D matching and surpasses prior state-of-the-art by 8% on 7Scenes (2D-3D) and 10% on 3DLoMatch (3D-3D) in registration recall. Automatic dental superimposition of 3D intraorals and 2D photographs for human identification

Dental comparison is considered a primary identification method, at the level of fingerprints and DNA profiling. One crucial but time-consuming step of this method is the morphological comparison. One of the main challenges to apply this method is the lack of ante-mortem medical records, specially on scenarios such as migrant death at the border and/or in countries where there is no universal healthcare. The availability of photos on social media where teeth are visible has led many odontologists to consider morphological comparison using them. However, state-of-the-art proposals have significant limitations, including the lack of proper modeling of perspective distortion and the absence of objective approaches that quantify morphological differences. Our proposal involves a 3D (post-mortem scan) - 2D (ante-mortem photos) approach. Using computer vision and optimization techniques, we replicate the ante-mortem image with the 3D model to perform the morphological comparison. Two automatic approaches have been developed: i) using paired landmarks and ii) using a segmentation of the teeth region to estimate camera parameters. Both are capable of obtaining very promising results over 20,164 cross comparisons from 142 samples, obtaining mean ranking values of 1.6 and 1.5, respectively. These results clearly outperform filtering capabilities of automatic dental chart comparison approaches, while providing an automatic, objective and quantitative score of the morphological correspondence, easily to interpret and analyze by visualizing superimposed images.

Hg-I2P: Bridging Modalities for Generalizable Image-to-Point-Cloud Registration via Heterogeneous Graphs

Image-to-point-cloud (I2P) registration aims to align 2D images with 3D point clouds by establishing reliable 2D-3D correspondences. The drastic modality gap between images and point clouds makes it challenging to learn features that are both discriminative and generalizable, leading to severe performance drops in unseen scenarios. We address this challenge by introducing a heterogeneous graph that enables refining both cross-modal features and correspondences within a unified architecture. The proposed graph represents a mapping between segmented 2D and 3D regions, which enhances cross-modal feature interaction and thus improves feature discriminability. In addition, modeling the consistency among vertices and edges within the graph enables pruning of unreliable correspondences. Building on these insights, we propose a heterogeneous graph embedded I2P registration method, termed Hg-I2P. It learns a heterogeneous graph by mining multi-path feature relationships, adapts features under the guidance of heterogeneous edges, and prunes correspondences using graph-based projection consistency. Experiments on six indoor and outdoor benchmarks under cross-domain setups demonstrate that Hg-I2P significantly outperforms existing methods in both generalization and accuracy. Code is released on https://github.com/anpei96/hg-i2p-demo.

GLASS: Geometry-aware Local Alignment and Structure Synchronization Network for 2D-3D Registration

Image-to-point cloud registration methods typically follow a coarse-to-fine pipeline, extracting patch-level correspondences and refining them into dense pixel-to-point matches. However, in scenes with repetitive patterns, images often lack sufficient 3D structural cues and alignment with point clouds, leading to incorrect matches. Moreover, prior methods usually overlook structural consistency, limiting the full exploitation of correspondences. To address these issues, we propose two novel modules: the Local Geometry Enhancement (LGE) module and the Graph Distribution Consistency (GDC) module. LGE enhances both image and point cloud features with normal vectors, injecting geometric structure into image features to reduce mismatches. GDC constructs a graph from matched points to update features and explicitly constrain similarity distributions. Extensive experiments and ablations on two benchmarks, RGB-D Scenes v2 and 7-Scenes, demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in image-to-point cloud registration.

PiLoT: Neural Pixel-to-3D Registration for UAV-based Ego and Target Geo-localization

We present PiLoT, a unified framework that tackles UAV-based ego and target geo-localization. Conventional approaches rely on decoupled pipelines that fuse GNSS and Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) for ego-pose estimation, and active sensors like laser rangefinders for target localization. However, these methods are susceptible to failure in GNSS-denied environments and incur substantial hardware costs and complexity. PiLoT breaks this paradigm by directly registering live video stream against a geo-referenced 3D map. To achieve robust, accurate, and real-time performance, we introduce three key contributions: 1) a Dual-Thread Engine that decouples map rendering from core localization thread, ensuring both low latency while maintaining drift-free accuracy; 2) a large-scale synthetic dataset with precise geometric annotations (camera pose, depth maps). This dataset enables the training of a lightweight network that generalizes in a zero-shot manner from simulation to real data; and 3) a Joint Neural-Guided Stochastic-Gradient Optimizer (JNGO) that achieves robust convergence even under aggressive motion. Evaluations on a comprehensive set of public and newly collected benchmarks show that PiLoT outperforms state-of-the-art methods while running over 25 FPS on NVIDIA Jetson Orin platform. Our code and dataset is available at: https://github.com/Choyaa/PiLoT.

Preoperative-to-intraoperative Liver Registration for Laparoscopic Surgery via Latent-Grounded Correspondence Constraints

In laparoscopic liver surgery, augmented reality technology enhances intraoperative anatomical guidance by overlaying 3D liver models from preoperative CT/MRI onto laparoscopic 2D views. However, existing registration methods lack explicit modeling of reliable 2D-3D geometric correspondences supported by latent evidence, leading to limited interpretability and potentially unstable alignment in clinical scenarios. In this work, we introduce Land-Reg, a correspondence-driven deformable registration framework that explicitly learns latent-grounded 2D-3D landmark correspondences as an interpretable intermediate representation to bridge cross-modal alignment. For rigid registration, Land-Reg embraces a Cross-modal Latent Alignment module to map multi-modal features into a unified latent space. Further, an Uncertainty-enhanced Overlap Landmark Detector with similarity matching is proposed to robustly estimate explicit 2D-3D landmark correspondences. For non-rigid registration, we design a novel shape-constrained supervision strategy that anchors shape deformation to matched landmarks through reprojection consistency and incorporates local-isometric regularization to alleviate inherent 2D-3D depth ambiguity, while a rendered-mask alignment enforces global shape consistency. Experimental results on the P2ILF dataset demonstrate the superiority of our method on both rigid pose estimation and non-rigid deformation. Our code will be available at https://github.com/cuiruize/Land-Reg.

Depth Augmented and FE Free 3D/2D Liver Registration for Laparoscopic Liver AR

Augmented reality (AR) guidance in laparoscopic liver surgery requires accurate registration of preoperative 3D models to intraoperative 2D video, but remains challenging due to partial visibility, specularities, and tissue deformation. Existing methods often rely on contour-based rigid initialization and finite-element (FE) models for deformable registration, increasing modeling and engineering complexity. We present a depth-augmented, FE-free 3D--2D registration pipeline that combines robust rigid initialization with patient-specific non-rigid refinement. For rigid alignment, we adapt the RefineNet module of FoundationPose to laparoscopic liver scenes by using multi-class contour maps and monocular depth for relative pose refinement. For deformable alignment, we construct a patient-specific statistical deformation model from non-rigid ICP (NICP) correspondences and optimize pose and shape parameters using a coarse-to-fine L-BFGS-B strategy. On a public clinical laparoscopic liver dataset, the proposed method achieves a mean target registration error (TRE) of 14.73,mm under a controlled manual-contour setting designed to isolate registration performance. Ablation studies show that monocular depth improves rigid initialization over contour-only inputs, while tumor-mapping analysis indicates that good surface alignment does not necessarily translate into lower target localization error. On an external dataset without ground truth, the method produces visually plausible overlays for qualitative assessment. These results suggest that depth-augmented pose refinement and FE-free statistical deformation modeling provide a promising alternative to FE-based pipelines for controlled 3D--2D liver registration in surgical AR.
