Overview

Cognitive offloading is the use of external tools, including generative AI, to handle parts of remembering, reasoning, planning, or learning. Researchers study it through controlled experiments in education and work, measures that compare assisted effort with unaided workflows, and models of how reliance and competence change over time. Design approaches such as Socratic prompts, metacognitive feedback, and adaptive scaffolding aim to help with tasks while keeping people involved in key decisions. The central tension is that offloading can save time and improve immediate results, yet may weaken learning, persistence, or independent skill; when and for whom these effects occur remains an open question.
