Overview

Human-Centered AI studies how AI systems can support people without undermining their agency, well-being, or relationships. Researchers use participatory design, interviews and field studies, accessibility and value-sensitive methods, and explainable AI to shape systems for settings such as healthcare, education, work, and assistive technology. As generative and agentic systems become more capable, evaluation is extending beyond benchmark accuracy to examine real-world outcomes, user experience, safety, and effects across different communities. A central tension is how to gain the benefits of automation and personalization while keeping systems accountable, inclusive, and under meaningful human control.
