Overview

Stereo vision studies how to infer depth and 3D structure by matching corresponding features across calibrated viewpoints, making it useful for robotics, mapping, medical imaging, and measurement. Methods range from classical epipolar geometry and triangulation to deep stereo networks, attention-based feature fusion, event-camera systems, and learned models that use synthetic or monocular data. Researchers evaluate these approaches on benchmarks such as KITTI, Middlebury, and ETH3D, as well as in settings including underwater imaging, surgery, and robot manipulation. A central challenge is balancing accurate, reliable geometry under occlusion, changing illumination, and domain shift with the speed, calibration quality, and data efficiency needed for real-world use.

QualiaNet: An Experience-Before-Inference Network

Human 3D vision involves two distinct stages: an Experience Module, where stereo depth is extracted relative to fixation, and an Inference Module, where this experience is interpreted to estimate 3D scene properties. Paradoxically, although stereo vision does not provide us with absolute distance information, it nonetheless affects our inferences about distance. We propose the Inference Module exploits a natural scene statistic: near scenes produce vivid disparity gradients, while far scenes appear comparatively flat. QualiaNet implements this two-stage architecture computationally: disparity maps simulating human stereo experience are passed to a CNN trained to estimate distance. The network can recover distance from disparity gradients alone, validating this approach.

StereoVGGT: A Training-Free Visual Geometry Transformer for Stereo Vision

Driven by the advancement of 3D devices, stereo vision tasks including stereo matching and stereo conversion have emerged as a critical research frontier. Contemporary stereo vision backbones typically rely on either Monocular Depth Estimation models or general-purpose Pre-trained Vision Models. Crucially, these models are predominantly pretrained without explicit supervision of camera poses. Given that such geometric knowledge is indispensable for stereo vision, the absence of explicit spatial constraints constitutes a significant performance bottleneck for existing architectures. Recognizing that the Visual Geometry Grounded Transformer (VGGT) operates as a foundation model pre-trained on extensive 3D priors, including camera poses, we investigate its potential as a robust backbone for stereo vision tasks. Nevertheless, empirical results indicate that its direct application to stereo vision yields suboptimal performance. We observe that VGGT suffers from a more significant degradation of geometric details during feature extraction. Such characteristics conflict with the requirements of binocular stereo vision, thereby constraining its efficacy for relative tasks. To bridge this gap, we propose StereoVGGT, a feature backbone specifically tailored for stereo vision. By leveraging the frozen VGGT and introducing a training-free feature adjustment pipeline, we mitigate geometric degradation and harness the latent camera calibration knowledge embedded within the model. StereoVGGT-based stereo matching network achieved the 1st1^{st} rank among all published methods on the KITTI benchmark, validating that StereoVGGT serves as a highly effective backbone for stereo vision.

WAFT-Stereo: Warping-Alone Field Transforms for Stereo Matching

We introduce WAFT-Stereo, a simple and effective warping-based method for stereo matching. WAFT-Stereo demonstrates that cost volumes, a common design used in many leading methods, are not necessary for strong performance and can be replaced by warping with improved efficiency. WAFT-Stereo ranks first on ETH3D (BP-0.5), Middlebury (RMSE), and KITTI (all metrics), reducing the zero-shot error by 81% on ETH3D, while being 1.8-6.7x faster than competitive methods. Code and model weights are available at https://github.com/princeton-vl/WAFT-Stereo.

OTPL-VIO: Robust Visual-Inertial Odometry with Optimal Transport Line Association and Adaptive Uncertainty

Robust stereo visual-inertial odometry (VIO) remains challenging in low-texture scenes and under abrupt illumination changes, where point features become sparse and unstable, leading to ambiguous association and under-constrained estimation. Line structures offer complementary geometric cues, yet many efficient point-line systems still rely on point-guided line association, which can break down when point support is weak and may lead to biased constraints. We present a stereo point-line VIO system in which line segments are equipped with dedicated deep descriptors and matched using an entropy-regularized optimal transport formulation, which performs global mass-transport assignment and supports unmatched observations under ambiguity, outliers, and partial observations. The proposed descriptor is training-free and is computed by sampling and pooling network feature maps. To improve estimation stability, we analyze the impact of line measurement noise and introduce reliability-adaptive weighting to regulate the influence of line constraints during optimization. Experiments on EuRoC and UMA-VI, together with real-world deployments in low-texture and illumination-challenging environments, demonstrate improved accuracy and robustness over representative baselines while maintaining real-time performance.

Non-invasive Growth Monitoring of Small Freshwater Fish in Home Aquariums via Stereo Vision

Monitoring fish growth behavior provides relevant information about fish health in aquaculture and home aquariums. Yet, monitoring fish sizes poses different challenges, as fish are small and subject to strong refractive distortions in aquarium environments. Image-based measurement offers a practical, non-invasive alternative that allows frequent monitoring without disturbing the fish. In this paper, we propose a non-invasive refraction-aware stereo vision method to estimate fish length in aquariums. Our approach uses a YOLOv11-Pose network to detect fish and predict anatomical keypoints on the fish in each stereo image. A refraction-aware epipolar constraint accounting for the air-glass-water interfaces enables robust matching, and unreliable detections are removed using a learned quality score. A subsequent refraction-aware 3D triangulation recovers 3D keypoints, from which fish length is measured. We validate our approach on a new stereo dataset of endangered Sulawesi ricefish captured under aquarium-like conditions and demonstrate that filtering low-quality detections is essential for accurate length estimation. The proposed system offers a simple and practical solution for non-invasive growth monitoring and can be easily applied in home aquariums.

Affine Correspondences in Stereo Vision: Theory, Practice, and Limitations

Affine transformations have been recently used for stereo vision. They can be exploited in various computer vision application, e.g., when estimating surface normals, homographies, fundamental and essential matrices. Even full 3D reconstruction can be obtained by using affine correspondences. First, this paper overviews the fundamental statements for affine transformations and epipolar geometry. Then it is investigated how the transformation accuracy influences the quality of the 3D reconstruction. Besides, we propose novel techniques for estimating the local affine transformation from corresponding image directions; moreover, the fundamental matrix, related to the processed image pair, can also be exploited. Both synthetic and real quantitative evaluations are implemented based on the accuracy of the reconstructed surface normals. For the latter one, a special object, containing three perpendicular planes with chessboard patterns, is constructed. The quantitative evaluations are based on the accuracy of the reconstructed surface normals and it is concluded that the estimation accuracy is around a few degrees for realistic test cases. Special stereo poses and plane orientations are also evaluated in detail.

EvalMVX: A Unified Benchmarking for Neural 3D Reconstruction under Diverse Multiview Setups

Recent advancements in neural surface reconstruction have significantly enhanced 3D reconstruction. However, current real world datasets mainly focus on benchmarking multiview stereo (MVS) based on RGB inputs. Multiview photometric stereo (MVPS) and multiview shape from polarization (MVSfP), though indispensable on high-fidelity surface reconstruction and sparse inputs, have not been quantitatively assessed together with MVS. To determine the working range of different MVX (MVS, MVSfP, and MVPS) techniques, we propose EvalMVX, a real-world dataset containing 2525 objects, each captured with a polarized camera under 2020 varying views and 1717 light conditions including OLAT and natural illumination, leading to 8,5008,500 images. Each object includes aligned ground-truth 3D mesh, facilitating quantitative benchmarking of MVX methods simultaneously. Based on our EvalMVX, we evaluate 1313 MVX methods published in recent years, record the best-performing methods, and identify open problems under diverse geometric details and reflectance types. We hope EvalMVX and the benchmarking results can inspire future research on multiview 3D reconstruction.

Progressive Per-Branch Depth Optimization for DEFOM-Stereo and SAM3 Joint Analysis in UAV Forestry Applications

Accurate per-branch 3D reconstruction is a prerequisite for autonomous UAV-based tree pruning; however, dense disparity maps from modern stereo matchers often remain too noisy for individual branch analysis in complex forest canopies. This paper introduces a progressive pipeline integrating DEFOM-Stereo foundation-model disparity estimation, SAM3 instance segmentation, and multi-stage depth optimization to deliver robust per-branch point clouds. Starting from a naive baseline, we systematically identify and resolve three error families through successive refinements. Mask boundary contamination is first addressed through morphological erosion and subsequently refined via a skeleton-preserving variant to safeguard thin-branch topology. Segmentation inaccuracy is then mitigated using LAB-space Mahalanobis color validation coupled with cross-branch overlap arbitration. Finally, depth noise - the most persistent error source - is initially reduced by outlier removal and median filtering, before being superseded by a robust five-stage scheme comprising MAD global detection, spatial density consensus, local MAD filtering, RGB-guided filtering, and adaptive bilateral filtering. Evaluated on 1920x1080 stereo imagery of Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) acquired with a ZED Mini camera (63 mm baseline) from a UAV in Canterbury, New Zealand, the proposed pipeline reduces the average per-branch depth standard deviation by 82% while retaining edge fidelity. The result is geometrically coherent 3D point clouds suitable for autonomous pruning tool positioning. All code and processed data are publicly released to facilitate further UAV forestry research.

StereoAdapter-2: Globally Structure-Consistent Underwater Stereo Depth Estimation

Stereo depth estimation is fundamental to underwater robotic perception, yet suffers from severe domain shifts caused by wavelength-dependent light attenuation, scattering, and refraction. Recent approaches leverage monocular foundation models with GRU-based iterative refinement for underwater adaptation; however, the sequential gating and local convolutional kernels in GRUs necessitate multiple iterations for long-range disparity propagation, limiting performance in large-disparity and textureless underwater regions. In this paper, we propose StereoAdapter-2, which replaces the conventional ConvGRU updater with a novel ConvSS2D operator based on selective state space models. The proposed operator employs a four-directional scanning strategy that naturally aligns with epipolar geometry while capturing vertical structural consistency, enabling efficient long-range spatial propagation within a single update step at linear computational complexity. Furthermore, we construct UW-StereoDepth-80K, a large-scale synthetic underwater stereo dataset featuring diverse baselines, attenuation coefficients, and scattering parameters through a two-stage generative pipeline combining semantic-aware style transfer and geometry-consistent novel view synthesis. Combined with dynamic LoRA adaptation inherited from StereoAdapter, our framework achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance on underwater benchmarks with 17% improvement on TartanAir-UW and 7.2% improvment on SQUID, with real-world validation on the BlueROV2 platform demonstrates the robustness of our approach. StereoVLA: Enhancing Vision-Language-Action Models with Stereo Vision

While Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models excel in generalist manipulation, they often lack fine-grained spatial awareness and show limited viewpoint robustness. This limitation largely stems from the reliance on pretrained RGB encoders, which lack explicit geometric cues and prioritize semantic alignment over geometric representation. We argue that effective visual representations for VLA models must jointly encode both semantic and geometric information. In this paper, we introduce StereoVLA, the first VLA model to incorporate rich geometric cues from large-scale synthetic stereo data. StereoVLA employs a Geometric-and-Semantic (GeoSem) vision encoder that extracts geometric cues from subtle stereo-view disparities for precise spatial perception, while simultaneously capturing semantic features from pixel observations to support language-conditioned manipulation. Additionally, we introduce two synergistic co-training objectives: Interaction-Region Depth Estimation for precise spatial reasoning, and Camera Parameter Estimation to implicitly align perception and action coordinate systems. Compared with baselines that employ various input modalities, StereoVLA achieves a 33.4% absolute gain in success rate in real-world experiments and demonstrates robustness to near-hemispheric camera perspectives. Elastic3D: Controllable Stereo Video Conversion with Guided Latent Decoding

The growing demand for immersive 3D content calls for automated monocular-to-stereo video conversion. We present Elastic3D, a controllable, direct end-to-end method for upgrading a conventional video to a binocular one. Our approach, based on (conditional) latent diffusion, avoids artifacts due to explicit depth estimation and warping. The key to its high-quality stereo video output is a novel, guided VAE decoder that ensures sharp and epipolar-consistent stereo video output. Moreover, our method gives the user control over the strength of the stereo effect (more precisely, the disparity range) at inference time, via an intuitive, scalar tuning knob. Experiments on three different datasets of real-world stereo videos show that our method outperforms both traditional warping-based and recent warping-free baselines and sets a new standard for reliable, controllable stereo video conversion. Online camera-pose-free stereo endoscopic tissue deformation recovery with tissue-invariant vision-biomechanics consistency

Tissue deformation recovery based on stereo endoscopic images is crucial for tool-tissue interaction analysis and benefits surgical navigation and autonomous soft tissue manipulation. Previous research suffers from the problems raised from camera motion, occlusion, large tissue deformation, lack of tissue-specific biomechanical priors, and reliance on offline processing. Unlike previous studies where the tissue geometry and deformation are represented by 3D points and displacements, the proposed method models tissue geometry as the 3D point and derivative map and tissue deformation as the 3D displacement and local deformation map. For a single surface point, 6 parameters are used to describe its rigid motion and 3 parameters for its local deformation. The method is formulated under the camera-centric setting, where all motions are regarded as the scene motion with respect to the camera. Inter-frame alignment is realized by optimizing the inter-frame deformation, making it unnecessary to estimate camera pose. The concept of the canonical map is introduced to optimize tissue geometry and deformation in an online approach. Quantitative and qualitative experiments were conducted using in vivo and ex vivo laparoscopic datasets. With the inputs of depth and optical flow, the method stably models tissue geometry and deformation even when the tissue is partially occluded or moving outside the field of view. Results show that the 3D reconstruction accuracy in the non-occluded and occluded areas reaches 0.37±\pm0.27 mm and 0.39±\pm0.21 mm in terms of surface distance, respectively. The method can also estimate surface strain distribution during various manipulations as an extra modality for mechanical-based analysis.

Neural Stereo Video Compression with Hybrid Disparity Compensation

Disparity compensation represents the primary strategy in stereo video compression (SVC) for exploiting cross-view redundancy. These mechanisms can be broadly categorized into two types: one that employs explicit horizontal shifting, and another that utilizes an implicit cross-attention mechanism to reduce cross-view disparity redundancy. In this work, we propose a hybrid disparity compensation (HDC) strategy that leverages explicit pixel displacement as a robust prior feature to simplify optimization and perform implicit cross-attention mechanisms for subsequent warping operations, thereby capturing a broader range of disparity information. Specifically, HDC first computes a similarity map by fusing the horizontally shifted cross-view features to capture pixel displacement information. This similarity map is then normalized into an "explicit pixel-wise attention score" to perform the cross-attention mechanism, implicitly aligning features from one view to another. Building upon HDC, we introduce a novel end-to-end optimized neural stereo video compression framework, which integrates HDC-based modules into key coding operations, including cross-view feature extraction and reconstruction (HDC-FER) and cross-view entropy modeling (HDC-EM). Extensive experiments on SVC benchmarks, including KITTI 2012, KITTI 2015, and Nagoya, which cover both autonomous driving and general scenes, demonstrate that our framework outperforms both neural and traditional SVC methodologies.
