Diverse Text Generation
Overview
Diverse text generation aims to make language models cover more distinct words, meanings, styles, stories, or problem-solving strategies, which matters when users need options rather than one likely answer. Approaches include decoding methods such as temperature adjustment, similarity penalties, and candidate reranking; prompting with personas or distinct semantic directions; and training objectives that reward coverage alongside quality. Researchers evaluate these methods on open-ended dialogue, creative writing, idea generation, and code or reasoning benchmarks, using measures such as semantic separation, lexical variety, and pass@k. A central tension is that preference tuning and strong validity constraints can make outputs more uniform, while methods that increase variation may reduce coherence or accuracy; reliable ways to measure and preserve useful diversity remain open challenges.
