Optical Coherence Tomography
Overview
Optical coherence tomography uses light to produce cross-sectional images of tissue, especially the retina, while OCT angiography (OCTA) reveals blood-vessel structure. Research develops CNN and Transformer methods for retinal-layer and lesion segmentation, disease classification, anomaly detection, and image reconstruction, alongside self-supervised learning, domain adaptation, and foundation models to reduce reliance on labeled scans. These tools are evaluated on tasks and datasets such as retinal-fluid segmentation, DUKE DME, OCTA-500, and OCT-Bench, and are also being applied to surgical guidance and robotic scanning. A central challenge is ensuring reliable performance across devices, hospitals, and diseases: strong benchmark scores or realistic synthetic images do not necessarily establish clinical usefulness, calibration, or safe generalization.
