Programming Education
Overview
Programming education studies how learners acquire coding concepts and problem-solving skills, and how courses, assessments, and software can teach them. Researchers use intelligent tutoring systems, automated code analysis and knowledge tracing, worked examples, block-based environments, and conversational language models to provide feedback, scaffolding, and personalized practice. Evaluation spans introductory programming exercises and exams, MOOCs, classroom interventions, and tutor benchmarks, measuring correctness as well as explanations, help-seeking, and independent learning. A central tension is providing timely assistance without encouraging answer delegation or unreliable feedback; outcomes depend on learners, tasks, and scaffold design, leaving long-term learning and trustworthy evaluation as open challenges.
