Talking to Itself While Coding: What Makes Comments Help Code Generation?

Large Language Models (LLMs) often generate natural-language comments while writing code, and these comments become part of the context used to generate the code that follows. However, it remains unclear which properties of comments affect code-generation performance. We study this question through observational analyses and controlled interventions. On LiveCodeBench, neither comment frequency nor broad comment intent reliably predicts pass@1. We then prefill weaker recipient models with comment blocks written by stronger source models, allowing us to separate comment surface form from the solution content they convey. Comments from source solutions that pass the tests raise recipient pass@1 by 17.2% on average. In contrast, comments describing failed solutions provide no reliable gain, while comments written for a different problem reduce pass@1 by 20.8%. Finally, across a wide range of models and prompt variants, most recipient models show no significant recovery of the external-comment gain, and the best case recovers only 24%. These results show that comments help code generation not merely because they are comments, but because they can provide correct solution content that prompting cannot reliably elicit.

Vectorizing Classical Tamil: Representation Learning for Verse-Commentary Pairs

We construct a corpus of 1,262 verse--commentary (urai) pairs from five Classical Tamil source sections, ranging from technical grammatical prose to modern paraphrase, and ask what information representation learning can recover. We train recurrent and Transformer encoders, a Siamese-style pair-matching network, an mBART-style encoder--decoder, and a decoder-only language model. Each analysis is interpreted against an appropriate control on the same data. TF-IDF provides a strong no-training lexical retrieval baseline, alongside representation analyses and generation controls for the learned models. A fixed string containing the 25 most frequent commentary words scores higher on generation overlap than the decoder-only model. Canonical correlation reaches 1.000 on Gaussian noise at these sample sizes, token-F1 spans only about 0.02--0.20 on this corpus, and the encoder--decoder continues to lower training loss for sixteen epochs after validation loss has begun to rise. One narrow result remains: the decoder-only model prefers authentic word order in 107 of 112 minimal-pair comparisons (95.5%), but does not reproduce held-out commentary content. We release the extraction and evaluation protocol; redistribution of the source commentaries remains subject to permission.

Comment on "Modeling rapid language learning by distilling Bayesian priors into artificial neural networks"

McCoy & Griffiths (2025, henceforth M&G) suggest that a Bayesian prior can be distilled into Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) through Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML, Finn et al., 2017). They support this empirically by showing that meta-trained networks demonstrate formal language learning abilities comparable to Yang & Piantadosi (2023)'s Bayesian learner, significantly outperforming standard ANNs. We point out that under the standard interpretation of a prior, M&G's procedure does not actually instill one; it merely initializes network weights favorably, leaving the objective function unchanged. We then consider a more permissive interpretation, where the system as a whole can be seen as implementing a Bayesian learner even without an explicit prior in the objective. We show that this interpretation faces nontrivial challenges. Finally, we assess how well MAML approximates the empirical results of Bayesian learning, showing that unlike genuine Bayesian learners, M&G's model overfits and generalizes poorly to unseen data.

NBA_Streaming: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Fine-Grained Basketball Commentary Generation in Continuous Streams

Live basketball commentary generation requires determining when an event is sufficiently observable and describing it before subsequent events unfold. However, existing methods are primarily designed for pre-segmented clips or complete videos, making them unsuitable for continuous streams. Existing datasets also provide limited supervision for player identities, fine-grained actions, event attributes, and coherent event chains, restricting the factual richness of generated commentary. To address these limitations, we introduce NBA_Streaming, a large-scale benchmark for online fine-grained basketball commentary generation. It contains 307.5 hours of basketball broadcasts and approximately 35K temporally aligned events, with annotations of event boundaries, player identities, fine-grained actions, event chains, and natural-language commentary. By moving from isolated clips to continuous streams, NBA_Streaming enables unified evaluation of event localization, response reliability, factual grounding, and commentary quality under causal constraints. We further propose a causal two-stage framework that combines completion-first localization with ball-centric semantic grounding, enabling the system to identify complete events from observed streams and organize scene, event, identity, and action cues for commentary generation. Extensive experiments reveal the difficulty of NBA_Streaming, where existing baselines struggle with online timing, factual grounding, and fine-grained description. Our framework consistently improves over strong alternatives, while the remaining gap highlights NBA_Streaming as a valuable benchmark for streaming sports video understanding and generation. LLM-Derived Priors for Thompson Sampling in Cold-Start Comment Recommendation

Multi-armed bandit algorithms, especially Thompson sampling, are widely used in online recommendation. Despite their ability to adapt from online feedback, these methods often suffer from cold-start limitations when newly introduced arms have little or no interaction history. In our setting, the candidate arms are user-generated textual comments, whose semantic content can reveal a title's appeal before sufficient interaction feedback is available. We therefore use large language models (LLMs) to extract semantic signals from comment text and convert them into informative Bayesian priors that warm-start Thompson sampling under sparse early-stage feedback. To account for aggregate segment-level differences in response patterns, we maintain and update posteriors separately for each gender-age segment. In a real-world online A/B/C test, we compare a uniform prior with two LLM-based designs: a Gender Prior for demographic-affinity cues and a Content Prior for title-specific identity cues. The results show that LLM-based priors are most beneficial in sparse-feedback regimes -- with the largest gains emerging once a small amount of interaction evidence has accumulated -- and that prior design leads to distinct funnel-level effects. We further analyze prior-reward alignment and demographic heterogeneity, finding that click-oriented alignment is strongest for the Gender Prior and that treatment effects vary substantially across demographic segments. These findings suggest that LLM-derived priors can serve as a practical warm-start mechanism for text-rich bandit recommendation, while also revealing deployment trade-offs.

From Inline Notes to Collected Commentaries: Toward Context-Preserving Organization of Exegetical Knowledge in Classical Chinese Texts

Inline notes and collected commentaries are important forms of scholarly communication that evolved within the Confucian exegetical tradition, yet have received little computational attention. Drawing on traditional Chinese exegetics and philology, this paper formulates collected commentary compilation as an NLP task and proposes a computational framework that preserves the contextual dependency of inline notes while enabling their automatic compilation and exegetical knowledge organization. It combines two-step prompt chaining for identifying the associated main-text segments and exegetical functions of annotations with cross-source mention clustering for integrating commentary across editions, achieving a CoNLL F1 score above 97% in a case study on the Classic of Mountains. Our framework lays the foundation for the large-scale organization of historical exegetical knowledge, thereby supporting a broad range of downstream philological and NLP tasks.

An Exploratory Study on LLM-Generated Code and Comments in Code Repositories

The use of LLMs in software development has become increasingly widespread on tasks such as code generation and summarization. Reports from large technology companies showed that around 20% to 30% of their code are generated by LLMs. However, there remains skepticism about the practical usage of LLM-generated code and comments, such as concerns on more time for debugging the generated code and the unnaturalness of the generated comments. In this paper, we study the code and comments detected as likely to be generated by LLMs and their characteristics, the differences between company- and community-maintained repositories, and how likely bugs are associated with LLM-generated code. We conduct extensive experiments on active company- and community-maintained repositories from 2021 to 2025 using various tools and techniques that detect code and comments generated by LLMs. Based on our detector-based proxy analysis, the results suggest that code detected as likely to be generated by LLMs decreased over time and appeared frequently in test cases, while that of comments remains relatively stable. Proxy results further suggest that code detected as likely to be generated by LLMs shows substantial intra-repository code clones, whereas comments exhibit a relatively low proportion of grammatically correct sentences. In addition, the company-maintained repositories show a higher percentage of code and comments detected as likely to be generated by LLMs, and only a small percentage of the human-labelled bugs are detected as being likely associated with LLM-generated code.

ToxiREX: A Dataset on Toxic REasoning in ConteXt

We introduce a new, contextual, multilingual dataset called ToxiREX: Toxic REasoning in ConteXt. The dataset consists of threads of Reddit comments and structured characterizations of what the comments imply, following a systematic toxic reasoning schema developed in a previous paper. Using the schema allows us to capture and explain implicit and context-dependent toxicity, while supporting mappings to existing toxicity taxonomies. The dataset includes comments in six languages (English, Arabic, Turkish, Spanish, German, and Dutch), collected from posts connected to specific major events (e.g. the 2023 Turkey earthquakes; the Russian invasion of Ukraine). We describe the context-preserving preprocessing of the threads. We create a training set of 125 thousand comments which is annotated by a commercially available LLM, and a test set of just under three thousand comments that is annotated by native speakers. We show that apparent disagreements in the test set annotations often reflect defensible alternative interpretations rather than noise. Finally, we provide baseline results by prompting and fine-tuning language models. To produce these results, we develop evaluation strategies for our hierarchical, schema-based predictions. While models perform better than random, there remains a lot of room for improvement, showing the task to be challenging. ToxiREX is the first dataset to simultaneously incorporate multiple languages, conversational context, and implicit toxicity, while using the toxic reasoning schema for rich, structured annotations. The cognitive, affective, and behavioral expression of self-stigma among people who use drugs in online substance use communities

Objectives: To develop a codebook for self-stigma across cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains, and to estimate the prevalence, co-occurrence, and temporal patterns of these indicators in Reddit posts by people who use drugs. Methods: We developed a ten-indicator codebook through consensus-based abductive coding spanning cognitive (self-labeling, pessimism/self-defeatism, deservingness/worthlessness), affective (shame, guilt/self-blame, despair/hopelessness), and behavioral (concealment, anticipated rejection, desire to quit, ambivalence) domains; two coders reached substantial agreement (Cohen's k = 0.72). We then scaled classification with a large language model validated against expert coding (k = 0.73, F1 = 0.80), analyzing 72,115 thread-initiating posts from 1,660 English-language users (2006-2025). Results: 3,838 posts (5.3%) from 1,228 users (74.0%) contained self-stigma; all ten indicators discriminated self-stigma posts (RR 3.6 to 86.2), led by self-labeling (56.0%) and despair/hopelessness (48.5%). Self-stigma was integrated: core and behavioral indicators were strongly associated at the user level (OR = 4.65, 95% CI 3.12-6.94, p < 0.001), and 87.0% of posts with behavioral indicators also contained a core indicator. Contrary to progressive models, behavioral indicators emerged earlier than core ones (desire to quit at median position 0.08 vs. shame at 0.38). Nine of ten indicators were stable across posting trajectories; only pessimism increased (OR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.25-2.10). Conclusion: Among people who use drugs online, self-stigma is an integrated phenomenon in which behavioral indicators rarely appear without internalized ones and often precede them. Most expressions remain stable over time, but pessimism about change deepens, marking a target for early digital intervention and showing that progressive stage models do not map directly onto textual disclosure.

Low-Latency Real-Time Audio Game Commentary System via LLM-Based Parallel Text Generation

We present a low-latency real-time audio game commentary system that generates spoken commentary directly from live gameplay video. In this end-to-end setting, a key bottleneck is accumulated waiting time; conventional pipelines capture frames, generate text, and synthesize speech sequentially for each utterance, and do not request the next generation until speech playback has completed. This strict sequentiality causes long and unnatural silence between utterances. To address this latency bottleneck, our system runs text generation in parallel with speech playback and buffers multiple candidate utterances ahead of time, enabling immediate synthesis at playback boundaries. Experiments on fast-paced game videos show that our parallel design reduces the mean inter-utterance silence from 9.6 seconds to 0.3 seconds compared to sequential baselines. It also improves similarity to professional speaking--silence timing patterns by over 40 %, and a user study with 120 experienced game players confirms significantly improved perceived speaking rhythm. A Context-Aware Dataset for Stance Detection in Bioethical Controversies on Reddit

Bioethical debates increasingly unfold on social media, yet stance detection research lacks large-scale, domain-specific resources for modeling such context-dependent discourse. We present BioStance, a context-aware dataset of 39,600 annotated Post-Comment pairs from Reddit bioethical discussions. BioStance covers six controversial targets across three dimensions of bioethical controversy: fundamental value conflicts, individual liberty versus collective responsibility, and technological uncertainty. Each instance preserves hierarchical conversational context and is labeled by three independent annotators using a three-class stance scheme: Favor, Against, and None. The annotations achieve a mean Krippendorff's αα of 0.82, indicating substantial reliability. By combining thematic diversity, conversational structure, and high-quality human annotation, BioStance supports research on context-aware stance detection, argument mining, and computational analysis of bioethical discourse.

SpecBench: Evaluating Specification-Level Reasoning for Software Engineering LLM Agents

Software engineering (SWE) agents are transitioning from code generation to full software development lifecycle automation. A critical phase in this lifecycle is specification design: transforming initial proposals into carefully considered requirements through expert review. Existing benchmarks such as SWE-Bench are implementation-focused by measuring the agent's ability to generate code given fixed, precise design requirements. This formulation assumes specifications are correct and complete. In real-world complex and critical software systems, initial specifications are often incomplete and flawed, requiring extensive expert reviews and revisions before being accepted for implementation. To fill this gap, we introduce SpecBench to evaluate specification-level reasoning: the ability to generate complete, unambiguous, consistent, and correct system specifications. SpecBench tasks are derived from the Request for Comments (RFC) process used by mature open-source projects. For each task, an agent is given an initial design proposal, the project codebase, and all past project RFC discussions. The agent is tasked with identifying specification deficiencies: omissions, ambiguities, inconsistencies, or incorrect assumptions in the initial proposal. We evaluate predictions against critiques raised by expert maintainers during historical RFC reviews. SpecBench contains tasks from 5 diverse repositories: Kubernetes, React, Rust, TVM, and vLLM. We evaluate state-of-the-art SWE agents on SpecBench, analyzing their capacity to reason about system design without execution feedback. The best performing agent, GPT-5.4, achieves 44.4% accuracy.

Feedback-to-Rubrics: Can We Learn Expert Criteria from Inline Comments?

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for writing and review support, but their usefulness depends on context-dependent criteria, such as expert preferences or organization-specific conventions, that are often tacit, undocumented, and difficult to elicit directly. We propose a problem setting for learning reusable natural-language rubrics from accumulated inline comments on artifacts such as human-written or LLM-generated drafts. Our method infers rubrics from these comments and iteratively refines them by observing comment-wise mismatches between rubric-conditioned predictions and reference comments. We evaluate the proposed method in real-world review settings and in controlled settings with reference rubrics. These results show that inline comments can be distilled into reusable rubrics that support comment prediction, rubric understanding, and automatic artifact revision.

P1SCO: Social Dimensions from a Perspectivist Lens

We introduce P1SCO, a dataset of social media comments collected from three distinct platforms, annotated according to ten social dimensions to capture the diversity of social interactions and perceptions. The dataset is carefully disaggregated to allow analysis at the level of individual comments, annotators, and platforms. In addition to the social dimension labels, we include rich metadata on the annotators, including demographics, Big Five personality profiles, and political affiliation. This combination of comment-level annotations and annotator-level features enables nuanced analyses of how social perception varies across platforms, individual differences, and demographic factors. By preserving the diversity of annotator perspectives, our dataset supports studies of inter- and intra-annotator agreement, the influence of personality and political orientation on social interpretation, and the cross-platform dynamics of social discourse.

Generating Legal Commentaries from Case Databases via Retrieval, Clustering, and Generation

We present a fully automated pipeline that transforms large collections of court decisions into legal commentaries for statutes - without providing any handcrafted doctrinal framework. Using 4.555 decisions of the German Federal Court of Justice that cite sections 242, 280, 812 and 823 of the German Civil Code (BGB), we extract paragraph-level chunks, summarize their reasoning, and derive keywords, which are embedded and clustered. For each cluster, an LLM generates headings and synthesizes citation-rich sections, which are then merged into coherent commentaries by four state-of-the-art LLMs. We evaluate along five dimensions - topical relevance, heading-match, citation faithfulness, cluster distinction and logical ordering - using both a human expert and an LLM-judge. Our results show that commentary-like argument mining from court decisions to generate reports that can be refreshed within minutes at minimal cost is feasible, yet they highlight limitations arising from restricted sources and the normativity of legal reasoning.

Comment on "Spin-1/2 Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet: Machine Learning Discovery of the Spinon Pair-Density-Wave Ground State"

A recent article [Phys. Rev. X 15, 011047 (2025)] utilizes group-equivariant convolutional neural networks to study the ground state of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. On the largest finite-size cluster studied to date (N=108N=108), the authors report variational energies significantly lower than other numerical methods, including state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. In contrast to previous results suggesting a possible spin-liquid ground state, the authors observe a spinon pair-density-wave ground state. We find that: (i) the reported low energies are artifacts of broken ergodicity in the Metropolis--Hastings sampling, since the single-spin-flip update rule utilized by the authors effectively freezes the Markov chains; and (ii) when ergodic sampling is enforced via spin-exchange updates, the neural network converges to energies significantly higher than existing DMRG results, calling the paper's claims into question.

Comment and Control: Hijacking Agentic Workflows via Context-Grounded Evolution

Automation platforms such as GitHub Actions and n8n are increasingly adopting so-called agentic workflows, which integrate Large Language Model (LLM) agents for tasks such as code review and data synchronization. While bringing convenience for developers, this integration exposes a new risk: An adversary may control and craft certain inputs, such as GitHub issue comments, to manipulate the LLM agent for unwanted actions, such as credential exfiltration and arbitrary command execution. To our knowledge, no prior academic work has studied such a risk in agentic workflows. In this paper, we design the first detection and exploitation framework, called JAW, to hijack agentic workflows hosted on automation platforms via a novel approach called Context-Grounded Evolution. Our key idea is to evolve agentic workflow inputs under the contexts derived from hybrid program analysis for hijacking purposes. Specifically, JAW generates agentic workflow contexts through three analyses: (i) static path-feasibility analysis to identify feasible agent-invocation paths and the input constraints required to trigger them, (ii) dynamic prompt-provenance analysis to determine how that input is transformed and embedded into the LLM context, and (iii) capability analysis to identify the actions and restrictions available to the agent at runtime. Our evaluation of JAW on GitHub workflows and n8n templates showed that 4714 GitHub workflows and eight n8n templates can be successfully hijacked, for example, to leak user credentials. Our findings span 15 widely-used GitHub Actions, including official GitHub Actions for Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Qwen CLI, and Cursor CLI, and two official n8n nodes. We responsibly disclosed all findings to the affected vendors and received many acknowledgements, fixes, and bug bounties, notably from GitHub, Google, and Anthropic.

CoMemNet: Contrastive Sampling with Memory Replay Network for Continual Traffic Prediction

In recent years, the integration of non-topological space modeling with temporal learning methods has emerged as an effective approach for capturing spatio-temporal information in non-Euclidean graphs. However, most existing methods rely on static underlying graph structures, which are inadequate for capturing the continuously expanding and evolving patterns in streaming traffic networks. To address this challenge, we propose a simple yet efficient dual-branch continual learning framework for traffic prediction, named CoMemNet. The fast-converging Online branch undertakes the primary prediction tasks, while the momentum-updated Target branch extracts historical information using Wasserstein Distance features to create a Dynamic Contrastive Sampler (DC Sampler). This sampler selects a node set with significant dynamic network feature changes for training, effectively mitigating the issue of catastrophic forgetting. Additionally, the backbone incorporates a lightweight Node-Adaptive Temporal Memory Buffer (TMRB-N) to consolidate old knowledge through memory replay and address the risk of memory explosion. Finally, we provide two newly curated open-source datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that CoMemNet achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance across all three large-scale real-world datasets. mdok-style at SemEval-2026 Task 10: Finetuning LLMs for Conspiracy Detection

SemEval-2026 Task 10 is focused on conspiracy detection. Specifically, the goal is to detect whether a Reddit comment expresses a conspiracy belief. Our submitted mdok-style system utilizes data augmentation and self-training (to cope with a rather small amount of training data) to finetune the Qwen3-32B model for a binary text-classification task. The submitted system is very competitive, ranking in the 85th percentile (8th out of 52 submissions). The results shown that our approach, which originated in machine-generated text detection, can be used for conspiracy detection as well.

HotComment: A Benchmark for Evaluating Popularity of Online Comments

Online comments play a crucial role in shaping public sentiment and opinion dynamics on social media. However, evaluating their popularity remains challenging, not only because it depends on linguistic quality, originality, and emotional resonance, but also because stylistic preferences vary widely across platforms and user groups, causing the same comment to resonate differently in different communities. In this work, we present HotComment, a multimodal benchmark integrating video and text modalities that comprehensively quantifies popularity from three enhanced aspects: (1) Content Quality, which evaluates semantic similarity with ground-truth human comments and extends quality assessment through four interpretable dimensions; (2) Popularity Prediction, based on trends from models trained on real-world interaction data; and (3) User Behavior Simulation, which models the distribution of platform users and approximates \textbf{engagement scores} through an agent-based framework. Furthermore, we propose StyleCmt, inspired by social ripple effects, where multiple stylistic dimensions align to amplify socially resonant expressions and suppress incongruent ones.

From Multimodal Perception to Strategic Reasoning: A Survey on AI-Generated Game Commentary

The advent of artificial intelligence has propelled AI-Generated Game Commentary (AI-GGC) into a rapidly expanding research area, offering advantages such as scalable availability and personalized narration. However, existing studies remain fragmented, and a systematic survey that unifies prior efforts is still lacking. To bridge this gap, our survey introduces a unified framework that systematically organizes the AI-GGC landscape. We present a novel taxonomy focused on three core commentator capabilities: Live Observation, Strategic Analysis, and Historical Recall, and further categorize commentary into three corresponding types: Descriptive Commentary, Analytical Commentary, and Background Commentary. Building on this structure, we provide an in-depth review of methods, datasets, and evaluation metrics, analyzing their strengths and limitations. Finally, we highlight key challenges and point out promising directions for future research in AI-GGC.

Video2Reaction: Training Foundation Video Models to Predict Audience Reaction

We introduce Video2Reaction, a multimodal dataset that maps short movie segments to the induced emotional reactions of viewers in the wild, as expressed through social media comments. Video2Reaction captures the natural diversity of emotional responses by aggregating reactions from online comments at scale, modeling labels as distributions over categorical emotions to better reflect the subjective and ambiguous nature of emotional perception. We benchmark two vision-language models (VLMs) finetuned with LoRA, showing that VLMs learn effectively from Video2Reaction and outperform specialized baselines on dominant reaction prediction. We further demonstrate that VLMs pre-finetuned on Video2Reaction transfer effectively to VCE, another induced emotion dataset with a different taxonomy and video domain. Notably, LLaVA-NeXT-Video-7B pre-finetuned on Video2Reaction and adapted on only 1% of VCE training data achieves a top-3 accuracy of 0.682, on par with the best reported VCE performance trained on the full dataset.
