Workflow Automation
Overview
Workflow automation studies how to coordinate multi-step work across applications, tools, and people, including business processes, document handling, data analysis, and clinical or engineering tasks. Common approaches combine large language model agents with workflow graphs, planners, APIs or GUI tools, retrieval, deterministic rules, validation, and human approval. The field is moving beyond isolated actions toward end-to-end, stateful workflows, with benchmarks testing cross-application coordination, policy compliance, and the quality of final artifacts. Constrained systems can perform well in production settings, but complex workflows remain unreliable, leaving a central tension between flexible agent behavior and the control, safety, and auditability needed for deployment.
