Whisper-Based Speech Transcription from Videos Across Multiple Languages for Cross-Cultural Understanding

Cross-cultural understanding has become increasingly important in today's highly connected, cross-national world. The success of LLM-based technologies is now driving the development of automated tools to aid understanding for nonnative people trying to succeed in cross-cultural environments. Building such automated tools is often done by leveraging in-thewild text, audio, and video data. This paper presents techniques for improving speech recognition-based transcript creation in multiple languages from videos to better train these automated tools. The focus is on processes and speech tools that can easily be used by cross-cultural tool builders without requiring deep speech processing expertise. Using publicly available videos from YouTube and Whisper-based tools, average transcription error rate across seven languages (Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Turkish, Russian, and Hebrew) of 30% are observed. With a modest amount of fine-tuning data, the average error rate can be reduced to 20% making such output much more usable for downstream processing. Speech and metadata associated with these videos that can be used by the community to further refine these experiments are released as well.

MemeBridge: A Dataset for Benchmarking and Mitigating the Bidirectional Cultural Gap in Meme Interpretation

Communicating across cultures is inherently challenging, especially through culturally dense and ambiguous formats like memes. While people expect large language models (LLMs) to hold promise for bridging such gaps, existing benchmark datasets often fail to capture the cultural context necessary for accurate interpretation. To address this, we introduce MemeBridge, a curated dataset centered on U.S.-originated memes, designed to capture two complementary perspectives: (1) how Chinese participants interpret these memes, and (2) how U.S. participants anticipate how people from other cultures might misunderstand them. Here, context refers to implicit cultural knowledge, including background beliefs, norms, and shared assumptions that shape meme comprehension. The dataset was constructed via a multi-stage crowdsourcing pipeline with rigorous validation, including human agreement checks and GPT-based classification verification. Each meme is annotated with sentiment, emotion, cultural significance, and knowledge type, providing rich supervision for downstream tasks. Notably, we observe that the anticipated misunderstandings from U.S. participants are often inaccurate, highlighting the asymmetries in cultural understanding and the challenges of adopting perspectives beyond one's own. This bidirectional framing, which focuses on both expression and perception, enables more nuanced benchmarking of cross-cultural comprehension. Our probing of multiple LLMs reveals that while models developed in different cultural contexts exhibit partial cross-cultural understanding, they often struggle with sophisticated interpretations. By contrast, fine-tuning with MemeBridge improves model performance, underscoring the value of culturally grounded resources for training and evaluating LLMs in globally diverse settings.

Measuring Cross-Cultural Style Diffusion Through Era Classification: US and Korean Popular Music

Popular music circulates globally while being locally reinterpreted, yet this process of cross-cultural style diffusion has rarely been quantified. We propose an era-classification framework for measuring temporal alignment between chart cultures. CNN classifiers trained from scratch on Billboard Hot 100 audio are applied to Korean Melon chart songs. Korean chart songs from the 1960s through the 1980s are consistently inferred as belonging to earlier Billboard eras, by a median of about four to five years, while the same models remain unbiased on held-out Billboard audio. The offset then halves at the 1990s, to roughly two to three years, and holds there through the 2000s. Reverse inference shows a complementary narrowing, and the pattern holds across architectures and seeds. We interpret these results as reflecting how globally circulating pop styles were locally adopted and progressively synchronized. The framework can be applied to other pairs of chart cultures beyond the US-Korea case examined here.

From Prompting to Describing: A Cross-Cultural Study of Language for AI-Generated Music

Text-to-music (TTM) generation systems allow users to create music through natural language prompts, yet it is unclear whether the descriptive language used to prompt aligns with descriptive language used to summarize or describe heard music. We pair 200 real-world Udio prompts with their generated audio and free-form descriptions collected from English- (n = 70) and Korean-speaking (n = 78) listeners, and contribute a human-derived taxonomy of musical prompting vocabulary grounded in real user data. Using this framework, alongside word- and vector-level analyses, we find a consistent structural asymmetry: prompts are dominated by Genre and Story/Narrative language. Genre terms propagate most reliably from prompt to perception, while narrative-heavy prompts are the strongest predictor of semantic misalignment. A preliminary cross-cultural comparison further suggests that description profiles vary across listener populations along narrative, functional, and affective dimensions, raising questions about whether current TTM systems, trained on aggregated English-centric corpora, can accommodate the full diversity of how people naturally express musical ideas.

Cross-cultural evaluation of taste-sound correspondences in AI-generated music

Sonic seasoning research has shown that listeners attribute systematic gustatory and emotional meaning to sound, and text-to-music generative artificial intelligence has recently been used to render gustatory prompts as musical stimuli. Whether the taste-sound correspondences acquired by such models hold beyond the cultural context in which they were validated remains untested. We extended a single-country study to a three-country online experiment conducted in Argentina, Italy, and Japan (N = 361). Participants first indicated their preference between base and fine-tuned MusicGen excerpts generated from four taste prompts (sweet, sour, bitter, salty), and then rated fine-tuned excerpts on twelve taste, emotion, and thermal descriptors. Preference for the fine-tuned model was confirmed in Argentina and Italy but not in Japan, and the salty prompt yielded the weakest correspondence in all three cohorts. Ratings differed substantially between countries, yet the main effect of country was no longer detectable once ratings had been standardized within participant, whereas the interactions characterizing the mapping of prompts onto descriptors remained essentially unchanged. Much of the apparent cross-cultural divergence is therefore attributable to differences in scale use; a structural component nevertheless persists. In addition an exploratory factor analysis indicated that the twelve descriptors were organized along different latent dimensions in each cohort. These results indicate that cross-cultural variation in AI-mediated sonic seasoning operates at two levels: the overall level at which taste is attributed to a given stimulus, and the relational structure of those attributions. Evaluations of generative music systems across populations should accordingly distinguish response-style bias from genuine perceptual reorganization.

Did Alice Do Wrong? Cross-Cultural Differences in Student Perceptions of Generative AI Use in University Computing Education

The rise of generative AI (GenAI) in higher education has prompted urgent debates surrounding academic integrity and ethical use. This study examines cross-cultural differences in student perceptions of GenAI use, comparing responses from students at Canadian and South Korean universities. Using a scenario-based survey administered in Fall 2024, we analyzed how students judged the ethicality and rule compliance of AI-assisted coding practices. Results reveal that Canadian students were consistently more likely to perceive the use of GenAI as both unethical and against institutional policies compared to Korean students, despite functionally identical institutional policies. Statistical analysis, including Mann-Whitney U tests and correlation coefficients, demonstrated significant differences across nearly all scenarios. Analysis of the factors used in generating scenarios indicated that the amount of AI-generated code incorporated into assignments most strongly influenced ethical judgments. Findings were interpreted through Hofstede's cultural dimensions framework, suggesting that cultural factors such as power distance, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance significantly shape students' ethical reasoning regarding GenAI. Our results contribute to the growing body of evidence emphasizing that equitable AI integration in education must be culturally responsive, taking into account diverse conceptions of academic integrity. We advocate for the development of nuanced AI-use guidelines that are sensitive to local cultural contexts while upholding fundamental principles of academic honesty. This study highlights the need for ongoing cross-cultural research to inform ethical AI policies and support responsible GenAI use in global higher education settings.

Billions of Sketches Reveal Hidden Cultural Variation in Human Concepts

Claims about the universality of human concepts have been predominantly assessed through linguistic similarity across languages and cultures. However, words are effective as communication devices because they compress rich experiential variation into shared conventions, potentially obscuring hidden individual and cultural differences in how concepts are mentally represented. Here, we analyse 2.6 billion human-made sketches of common concepts from 236 countries and territories to examine conceptual structure through people's visual imagination. Consistent with recent work on image-based cognition, we find that single concepts unfold into multiple distinct visual exemplars, revealing latent information about similarities and differences in conceptual structure across cultures. This variation is strongest for concepts involving haptic interaction, suggesting that visual imagery reflects variation in embodied experience as much as conventional definitions. Comparing embedding models of sketches with word embedding models across languages, we find that their geometries diverge, with visual representations preserving rich semantic and cultural structure that language models compress. Cross-cultural similarities derived from sketches align 45% more closely with established cultural distances than do text-based measures. Together, these results suggest that patterns of human conceptual universality may depend critically on the modality through which concepts are measured, with large-scale sketching providing a direct, high-resolution probe of conceptual diversity across embodied and cultural dimensions of thought.

WeGenBench: A Multidimensional Diagnostic Benchmark towards Text-to-Image Model Optimization

Recent text-to-image generation models have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in synthesizing highly realistic images from text inputs alone. Although existing benchmarks can evaluate the generation capabilities of various models to some extent, they struggle to comprehensively and accurately measure performance across multiple dimensions, often failing to reveal the inherent deficiencies of models in specific categories. To address these limitations, we propose WeGenBench, a novel benchmark designed for the comprehensive, multi-perspective evaluation of text-to-image generation capabilities. Our benchmark comprises a total of 4,000 test prompts across two primary categories, meticulously balanced between Chinese and English to evaluate bilingual and cross-cultural generation capabilities. Beyond macroscopic scene classification, we annotate each prompt with multi-dimensional tags tailored to the distinct content and challenges of each language, thereby refining the generation tasks into more specific sub-categories. Through a cross-dimensional evaluation mechanism leveraging both scene classifications and multi-dimensional tags, WeGenBench can precisely pinpoint model shortcomings in specific generation categories. Furthermore, to measure generation quality more accurately, we design and validate several novel evaluation metrics by integrating Vision-Language Models (VLMs), which assess model performance on domain-specific tasks from three core aspects. Crucially, our approach yields both the assessment outcomes and the detailed reasoning trajectories, facilitating a rigorous verification of the accuracy and soundness of the evaluation results. Finally, we conduct systematic benchmarking on current state-of-the-art methods and provide an in-depth analysis of the limitations present in existing models.

Quantifying the Salience of Geo-Cultural Values for Pluralistic Safety Alignment

Safe global deployment of AI models requires alignment with human values that vary across cultures. Yet rater pools in safety evaluation datasets remain largely geographically homogeneous, failing to capture geo-cultural differences. Further, it remains unclear whether such differences persist after controlling for demographics such as age, gender, and ethnicity. Through a meta-analysis of safety datasets, we find that most do not report geo-cultural information, and those that do lack a unified methodology to jointly analyze geo-cultural and demographic correlates. Using the Inglehart-Welzel dimensions of cross-cultural variation, we demonstrate via multilevel modeling that cultural zone membership explains variance in safety ratings beyond standard demographics (p<0.05 across 6 datasets). Moreover, our analysis indicates that roughly 10% of items in the datasets we examined are culturally sensitive: likely to be misclassified as safe without adequate cultural representation. We evaluate LLMs as both rater surrogates and triage tools, finding that current LLMs do not reliably stand in for raters, though they can help prioritize culturally sensitive items for human annotation. Our findings motivate more culturally pluralistic safety evaluation and offer practical takeaways to support it.

Supervised Semantic Differential for Cross-Cultural Concept Analysis: A Case Study of Human Affect

Cross-cultural comparison of psychological meaning requires methods that go beyond word-level translation and examine how semantic dimensions are organized across languages. We introduce a cross-lingual extension of the Supervised Semantic Differential (SSD), which estimates supervised semantic gradients in embedding space and compares them across aligned multilingual word embeddings. The method tests gradient alignment and difference using permutation procedures and bootstrap intervals, and interprets residual differences through clustering around the difference gradient. We demonstrate the approach on Polish, English, and French affective norm lexicons, modeling Valence, Arousal, and Dominance where available. Affective dimensions were significantly recoverable across languages and model settings. Cross-lingual comparisons showed broad alignment together with structured residual differences: Valence appeared mostly shared, whereas Arousal and Dominance produced more interpretable contrasts involving bodily threat, aesthetic stimulation, internal emotionality, macro-level authority, and everyday control. Several clusters also reflected corpus-specific artifacts, underscoring the need for cautious interpretation. Cross-lingual SSD offers an explainable framework for testing semantic alignment, identifying divergence, and generating hypotheses about cross-cultural differences in psychological meaning.

MAVEN A Multi-Agent Framework for Multicultural Text-to-Video Generation

Text-to-video (T2V) generation has rapidly progressed in visual fidelity, yet its ability to faithfully represent multiple cultures within a single prompt remains underexplored. We introduce MAVEN, a multi-agent prompt refinement framework designed to improve cultural fidelity in both mono-cultural and cross-cultural T2V generation. MAVEN decomposes prompts into person, action, and location dimensions, handled by specialized agents operating in parallel or sequentially. To support systematic evaluation, we contribute a new benchmark of 243 culturally grounded prompts and 972 corresponding videos, spanning three cultures (Chinese, American, Romanian), three action categories, and both mono-cultural and cross-cultural scenarios. Evaluations combining CLIP-based metrics, VLM-as-judge assessments, and videoquality measures show that multi-agent refinement, particularly parallel specialization, significantly improves cultural relevance while preserving visual quality and temporal consistency. Defining Cultural Capabilities for AI Evaluation: A Taxonomy Grounded in Intercultural Communication Theory

Tremendous efforts have been put into evaluating the inclusivity and effectiveness of AI systems across cultures. However, the cultural capabilities considered in much of the literature remain vaguely defined, are referred to using interchangeable terminology, and are typically limited to recalling accurate information about various demographics, regions, and nationalities. To address this construct ambiguity, we draw from Intercultural Communication scholarship and propose a three-level taxonomy of AI-relevant cultural capabilities: Cultural Awareness answers "Does the model know?", Cultural Sensitivity answers "How does it frame its knowledge?", and Cultural Competence answers "Can it adapt as the interaction evolves?". Beyond conceptual clarification, we position this taxonomy as a practical tool for improving the validity and interpretability of AI evaluation in real-world, multicultural settings. Without such construct clarity, evaluation results risk overstating model capabilities and may lead to inappropriate deployment decisions in culturally sensitive contexts.

CrossCult-KIBench: A Benchmark for Cross-Cultural Knowledge Insertion in MLLMs

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), trained primarily on English-centric data, frequently generate culturally inappropriate or misaligned responses in cross-cultural settings. To mitigate this, we introduce the task of cross-cultural knowledge insertion, which focuses on adapting models to specific cultural contexts while preserving their original behavior in other cultures. To facilitate research in this area, we introduce CrossCult-KIBench, a comprehensive evaluation benchmark for assessing both the effectiveness of knowledge insertion and its unintended side effects on non-target cultures. The benchmark includes 9,800 image-grounded cases covering 49 culturally relevant visual scenarios across English, Chinese, and Arabic language-culture groups. It supports evaluation in both single-insert and sequential-insert settings. We also propose Memory-Conditioned Knowledge Insertion (MCKI) as a baseline method. MCKI retrieves relevant cultural knowledge from an external memory using frozen MLLM representations, prepending matched entries as conditional prompts when applicable. Extensive experiments on CrossCult-KIBench reveal that current approaches struggle to balance effective cultural adaptation with behavioral preservation, highlighting a key challenge in developing culturally-aware MLLMs. Our work thus underscores an important research direction for developing more culturally adaptive and responsible MLLMs.

Do Melody and Rhythm Coevolve?

Music comprises two core structural components, melody and rhythm, that vary widely across cultures. Whether these components coevolve in a coupled way or follow independent trajectories remains unclear. We introduce a novel computational pipeline to extract vocal melodic pitch-interval and percussive inter-onset timing distributions from 27,628 popular songs across 59 countries, enabling large-scale cross-cultural comparison that bypasses traditional music annotations. Musical similarities between countries aligned with geographic and linguistic relationships, validating our approach. Substantial variation emerged in both melodic and rhythmic structures across countries, yet the diversity of the two components was not significantly correlated, challenging assumptions of coupled evolution. Only rhythmic diversity was significantly associated with ethnic and linguistic heterogeneity, while melodic diversity showed no such association. These findings suggest that melody and rhythm constitute partially independent systems shaped by distinct cultural and evolutionary pressures, rather than components of a single monolithic musical style.

Accent Conversion: A Problem-Driven Survey of Sociolinguistic and Technical Constraints

Accent conversion has rapidly progressed alongside growing interest in improving global cross-cultural communication. This survey presents an overview of the evolution of accent conversion methodologies, analyzing how the field has developed in response to fundamental challenges related to data alignment, representation disentanglement, and resource scarcity. We trace the progression from early rule-based digital signal processing approaches such as spectral manipulation and formant-based analysis to modern neural architectures capable of flexible and reference-free accent transformation. In addition, the survey situates accent conversion within its linguistic foundations and examines how different application requirements impose varying constraints on the balance between accent modification and speaker identity preservation. Finally, it reviews commonly used speech datasets and evaluation methodologies, identifies persistent challenges, and outlines directions for future research aimed at achieving more controllable and perceptually consistent accent conversion.

From Chatbots to Confidants: A Cross-Cultural Study of LLM Adoption for Emotional Support

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used not only for instrumental tasks, but as always-available and non-judgmental confidants for emotional support. Yet what drives adoption and how users perceive emotional support interactions across countries remains unknown. To address this gap, we present the first large-scale cross-cultural study of LLM use for emotional support, surveying 4,641 participants across seven countries (USA, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands). Our results show that adoption rates vary dramatically across countries (from 20% to 59%). Using mixed models that separate cultural effects from demographic composition, we find that: Being aged 25-44, religious, married, and of higher socioeconomic status are predictors of positive perceptions (trust, usage, perceived benefits), with socioeconomic status being the strongest. English-speaking countries consistently show more positive perceptions than Continental European countries. We further collect a corpus of 731 real multilingual prompts from user interactions, showing that users mainly seek help for loneliness, stress, relationship conflicts, and mental health struggles. Our findings reveal that LLM emotional support use is shaped by a complex sociotechnical landscape and call for a broader research agenda examining how these systems can be developed, deployed, and governed to ensure safe and informed access.

Reheat Nachos for Dinner? Evaluating AI Support for Cross-Cultural Communication of Neologisms

Neologisms and emerging slang are central to daily conversation, yet challenging for non-native speakers (NNS) to interpret and use appropriately in cross-cultural communication with native speakers (NS). NNS increasingly make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to learn these words. We study the utility of such tools in mediating an informal communication scenario through a human-subjects study (N=234): NNS participants learn English neologisms with AI support, write messages using the learned word to an NS friend, and judge contextual appropriateness of the neologism in two provided writing samples. Using both NS evaluator-rated communicative competence of NNS-produced writing and NNS' contextual appropriateness judgments, we compare three AI-based support conditions: AI Definition, AI Rewrite into simpler English, AI Explanation of meaning and usage, and Non-AI Dictionary for comparison. We show that AI Explanation yields the largest gains over no support in NS-rated competence, while contextual appropriateness judgments show indifference across support. NNS participants' self-reported perceptions tend to overestimate NS ratings, revealing a mismatch between perceived and actual competence. We further observe a significant gap between NNS- and NS-produced writing, highlighting the limitations of current AI tools and informing design for future tools.

Evolutionary modelling reveals melodic and harmonic constraints on global scale structure

Since antiquity, musical scales have been explained by harmony rather than melody. This view relies on the mathematically designed scales of a few traditions, and was never directly tested. Testing it requires cross-cultural data and a method that judges theories by what they get wrong as well as right. We provide both, modelling scale evolution across 1,314 scales from 96 countries. A Melody model explains the near-universal preference for step-sizes of 1-3 semitones, and matches independent data from melodies, singing, and psychoacoustics. Harmony does far less: it explains the music-theoretic scales, but in those measured from performance it adds only a weak bias towards fourths, fifths, and octaves. Harmony's importance has been overstated, likely due to the historical focus on music-theoretic rather than measured scales. Melody is the primary driver of global scale structure; harmonic constraints are less impactful and mainly reflect musicological theory over musical performance.
