Integrated Sensing and Communication

Also known as ISAC

Overview

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) studies how wireless systems can transmit data and simultaneously detect or track people, vehicles, and other targets. Common approaches reuse OFDM and other communication signals, jointly optimize waveforms, beamforming, and resource allocation, or apply learning methods to channel-state information and multimodal sensor data. Recent work also explores task-oriented and semantic communication, where systems transmit only information needed for goals such as obstacle avoidance or coordinated vehicle motion. The field spans simulations, public datasets, and hardware testbeds, but balancing sensing accuracy, communication quality, latency, energy use, and safety under real-world conditions remains a central challenge.

An Integrated Roadside Sensing and Communication Framework for Vulnerable Road User Safety at Signalized Intersections

Vulnerable road users (VRUs) account for approximately half of urban traffic deaths globally, with intersections concentrating a disproportionate share of these casualties. Recent reviews of sensing technology for VRU protection have cataloged dozens of single-sensor and dual-sensor deployments, yet none of the surveyed systems couples multi-modal sensing with edge-side near-miss analytics and bidirectional vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and pedestrian-to-everything (P2X) messaging in a single intersection cabinet. This paper presents an integrated framework for VRU protection at signalized intersections, combining LiDAR, radar, RGB camera, and thermal camera at the perception layer, edge-based prediction and surrogate-safety analytics at the computation layer, V2X and P2X messaging at the communication layer, and adaptive signal control at the actuation layer. The framework is grounded in an empirical case study using R-LiViT, the first publicly released roadside LiDAR-Visual-Thermal dataset, which provides 200 multi-modal sequences and 2,400 annotated RGB-T frames at three German intersections. Analysis of 53,319 detection annotations reveals that VRUs comprise approximately 49% of all road-user observations, that day-to-night density drops by 38% for pedestrians and 45% for vehicles while the night distribution shows a higher close-proximity share, that per-frame close-proximity event counts vary approximately 10-fold across the eight unique locations at three intersections, and that 83% of pedestrian bounding boxes are small in image space, indicating that VRUs are typically far from any single sensor. These findings support multi-modal sensing, edge-side analytics, and adaptive context-sensitive deployment rather than uniform single-sensor solutions.

X-Band UAV-enabled Integrated Sensing and Communications for Vehicular Networks

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly considered as aerial platforms capable of providing both sensing and communication services, representing a promising paradigm for intelligent transportation systems. This paper investigates the optimal time allocation for a UAV-enabled integrated sensing and communication (ISaC) system operating in the X-band for vehicular networks. We analyze the trade-off between sensing accuracy and communication performance under practical UAV constraints and fading effects, considering both single-shadowing and double-shadowing channel models. An optimization framework is developed to allocate time between sensing and communication while guaranteeing minimum communication rates and sufficient sensing reliability. Simulation results demonstrate adaptive time allocation strategies, highlighting how UAV-to-ground channel conditions and target distances influence the balance between sensing and communication in smart mobility scenarios.

CRB-Guided Framework Design and Resource Allocation for Indoor mmWave ISCC Systems

Integrated sensing, communication, and computation (ISCC) provides a promising framework for indoor human-centric applications. In these applications, short-term human pose prediction facilitates continuous human tracking and resource allocation in advance. In this paper, we propose a Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) guided resource allocation framework for indoor mmWave ISCC systems to minimize the human pose prediction error under communication, latency, and energy constraints. We characterize the impact of sensing power on range-estimation uncertainty and point-cloud perturbation based on the CRB. To capture the impact of computation resources on prediction performance, we adopt an adaptive-depth Mamba-based pose prediction model, where lightweight prediction heads are attached after every layer to enable inference with different model depths. With this unified sensing-computation modeling, we establish a quantitative relationship among sensing power, model depth, and prediction error. Furthermore, we formulate a joint resource allocation problem to minimize the pose prediction error. To solve this problem efficiently, we develop an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm, where closed-form solutions are derived for the sensing power and model depth update steps. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly reduces pose prediction error compared with baseline methods, validating its effectiveness for resource-constrained indoor human-centric ISCC systems.

Gesture-Aware Indoor THz ISAC Systems for Adaptive Resource Allocation

This paper investigates a multi-user indoor integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating in the terahertz (THz) band, designed for adaptive communication based on gesture recognition. Leveraging gesture tracking through an extended Kalman filter (EKF), the access point (AP) dynamically adjusts resource allocation in response to detected gesture variations, thereby improving sensing accuracy. Based on the gesture recognition results, the AP further updates the communication quality requirements of different users, enabling efficient resource allocation. To this end, an adaptive joint optimization algorithm for power allocation and beamforming is developed to maximize the overall sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) while satisfying the gesture-dependent communication quality of service (QoS) constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively responds to gesture dynamics, achieving superior sensing accuracy and communication performance compared with conventional single-variable optimization baselines.

A Camera-Cooperative ISAC Framework for Multimodal Non-Cooperative UAVs Sensing

The detection of non-cooperative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) presents significant challenges for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems due to the inherent limitations of single-modal perception and the competition for shared communication and sensing resources. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel Camera-Cooperative ISAC (CC-ISAC) framework that employs multimodal sensing to enable efficient UAV beam steering and tracking. The proposed framework employs cameras for coarse-grained airspace monitoring and utilizes ISAC for fine-grained, high-precision sensing, forming a complementary perception loop that enhances both sensing accuracy and resource efficiency. Within this framework, two key modules are developed: (1) a Vision-to-Echo Data Alignment (V2EDA) model that aligns visual and echo-domain features through cross-attention mechanisms, and (2) a Multimodal Fusion-Based Estimation (MMFE) model that integrates historical multimodal data with current observations for robust state estimation. Extensive evaluations conducted on the DeepSense 6G dataset demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves an average reduction of 71% in beam steering overhead and 1.69-11.15% in tracking overhead while maintaining high angular estimation accuracy. The CC-ISAC framework effectively mitigates resource contention between sensing and communication, enabling reliable UAV surveillance while freeing substantial system resources for additional communication tasks, thereby representing a practical advancement in ISAC system design.

Multi-Periodogram Velocity Estimation with Irregular Reference Signals for Robot-Aided ISAC

This paper addresses velocity estimation within robot-aided integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), where mobile robots act as sensing nodes but can only opportunistically reuse irregular 5G/6G reference signals (RSs). We show that the velocity profile induced by such irregular time-domain patterns can be decomposed into a periodic-peak component and an amplitude-shaping (weighting) component. Leveraging this structure, we propose a multi-periodogram velocity estimation algorithm that is standard-compliant and does not require new sensing-dedicated RSs or 3GPP modifications. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with conventional periodogram processing, the proposed method improves low-SNR robustness by achieving a 3 dB SNR gain at the 10% missed-detection rate and reducing false alarms by 51%.

Rascene: High-Fidelity 3D Scene Imaging with mmWave Communication Signals

Robust 3D environmental perception is critical for applications such as autonomous driving and robot navigation. However, optical sensors such as cameras and LiDAR often fail under adverse conditions, including smoke, fog, and non-ideal lighting. Although specialized radar systems can operate in these environments, their reliance on bespoke hardware and licensed spectrum limits scalability and cost-effectiveness. This paper introduces Rascene, an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework that leverages ubiquitous mmWave OFDM communication signals for 3D scene imaging. To overcome the sparse and multipath-ambiguous nature of individual radio frames, Rascene performs multi-frame, spatially adaptive fusion with confidence-weighted forward projection, enabling the recovery of geometric consensus across arbitrary poses. Experimental results demonstrate that our method reconstructs 3D scenes with high precision, offering a new pathway toward low-cost, scalable, and robust 3D perception.

Environment-Aware Channel Prediction for Vehicular Communications: A Multimodal Visual Feature Fusion Framework

The deep integration of communication with intelligence and sensing, as a defining vision of 6G, renders environment-aware channel prediction a key enabling technology. As a representative 6G application, vehicular communications require accurate and forward-looking channel prediction under stringent reliability, latency, and adaptability demands. Traditional empirical and deterministic models remain limited in balancing accuracy, generalization, and deployability, while the growing availability of onboard and roadside sensing devices offers a promising source of environmental priors. This paper proposes an environment-aware channel prediction framework based on multimodal visual feature fusion. Using GPS data and vehicle-side panoramic RGB images, together with semantic segmentation and depth estimation, the framework extracts semantic, depth, and position features through a three-branch architecture and performs adaptive multimodal fusion via a squeeze-excitation attention gating module. For 360-dimensional angular power spectrum (APS) prediction, a dedicated regression head and a composite multi-constraint loss are further designed. As a result, joint prediction of path loss (PL), delay spread (DS), azimuth spread of arrival (ASA), azimuth spread of departure (ASD), and APS is achieved. Experiments on a synchronized urban V2I measurement dataset yield the best root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.26 dB for PL, RMSEs of 37.66 ns, 5.05 degrees, and 5.08 degrees for DS, ASA, and ASD, respectively, and mean/median APS cosine similarities of 0.9342/0.9571, demonstrating strong accuracy, generalization, and practical potential for intelligent channel prediction in 6G vehicular communications.

Safety-aware Goal-oriented Semantic Sensing, Communication, and Control for Robotics

Wirelessly-connected robotic systems empower robots with real-time intelligence by leveraging remote computing resources for decision-making. However, the data exchange between robots and edge servers often overwhelms communication links, introducing latency that degrades task performance. To tackle this, goal-oriented semantic communication (GSC) has been introduced for wirelessly-connected robotic systems to extract and transmit only goal-relevant semantic representations. While this improves task effectiveness, it generally overlooks practical safety requirements. Meanwhile, existing robotics research often treats safety primarily as a control-level problem, without systematically considering safety across sensing, communication, and control in a closed-loop manner. To bridge this gap, we investigate how to enable safety-aware goal-oriented semantic (SA-GS) sensing, communication, and control co-design in wirelessly-connected robotic systems, aiming to maximize the robotic task effectiveness subject to practical safety requirements. We first introduce {an} architecture {for} wirelessly-connected robotic systems and representative use cases. We then summarize general safety requirements and effectiveness metrics across the use cases. Next, we systematically analyze the unique safety and effectiveness challenges in sensing, communication, and control. Based on these, we further present potential SA-GS research directions. Finally, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) target tracking case study validates that one of the presented SA-GS research directions, i.e., semantic-based C&C packet execution, could significantly improve safety rate and tracking success rate by more than 2 times and 4.5 times, respectively.

JCAS-MARL: Joint Communication and Sensing UAV Networks via Resource-Constrained Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Multi-UAV networks are increasingly deployed for large-scale inspection and monitoring missions, where operational performance depends on the coordination of sensing reliability, communication quality, and energy constraints. In particular, the rapid increase in overflowing waste bins and illegal dumping sites has created a need for efficient detection of waste hotspots. In this work, we introduce JCAS-MARL, a resource-aware multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework for joint communication and sensing (JCAS)-enabled UAV networks. Within this framework, multiple UAVs operate in a shared environment where each agent jointly controls its trajectory and the resource allocation of an OFDM waveform used simultaneously for sensing and communication. Battery consumption, charging behavior, and associated CO2_2 emissions are incorporated into the system state to model realistic operational constraints. Information sharing occurs over a dynamic communication graph determined by UAV positions and wireless channel conditions. Waste hotspot detection requires consensus among multiple UAVs to improve reliability. Using this environment, we investigate how MARL policies exploit the sensing-communication-energy trade-off in JCAS-enabled UAV networks. Simulation results demonstrate that adaptive pilot-density control learned by the agents can outperform static configurations, particularly in scenarios where sensing accuracy and communication connectivity vary across the environment.

We present LiveSense - a cross-platform that transforms a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Wi-Fi Network Interface Card (NIC) on a laptop into a centimeter-level Range-Doppler sensor while preserving simultaneous communication capability. The laptops are equipped with COTS Intel AX211 (Wi-Fi 6E) or Intel BE201 (Wi-Fi 7) NICs. Deep Learning-Driven Friendly Jamming for Secure Multicarrier ISAC Under Channel Uncertainty

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems promise efficient spectrum utilization by jointly supporting radar sensing and wireless communication. This paper presents a deep learning-driven framework for enhancing physical-layer security in multicarrier ISAC systems under imperfect channel state information (CSI) and in the presence of unknown eavesdropper (Eve) locations. Unlike conventional ISAC-based friendly jamming (FJ) approaches that require Eve's CSI or precise angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimates, our method exploits radar echo feedback to guide directional jamming without explicit Eve's information. To enhance robustness to radar sensing uncertainty, we propose a radar-aware neural network that jointly optimizes beamforming and jamming by integrating a novel nonparametric Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) estimator based on f-divergence. The jamming design satisfies the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) constraints even in the presence of noisy AoA. For efficient implementation, we introduce a quantized tensor train-based encoder that reduces the model size by more than 100 times with negligible performance loss. We also integrate a non-overlapping secure scheme into the proposed framework, in which specific sub-bands can be dedicated solely to communication. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed solution achieves significant improvements in secrecy rate, reduced block error rate (BLER), and strong robustness against CSI uncertainty and angular estimation errors, underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed deep learning-driven friendly jamming framework under practical ISAC impairments.

Spectrum Shortage for Radio Sensing? Leveraging Ambient 5G Signals for Human Activity Detection

Radio sensing in the sub-10 GHz spectrum offers unique advantages over traditional vision-based systems, including the ability to see through occlusions and preserve user privacy. However, the limited availability of spectrum in this range presents significant challenges for deploying largescale radio sensing applications. In this paper, we introduce Ambient Radio Sensing (ARS), a novel Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) approach that addresses spectrum scarcity by repurposing over-the-air radio signals from existing wireless systems (e.g., 5G and Wi-Fi) for sensing applications, without interfering with their primary communication functions. ARS operates as a standalone device that passively receives communication signals, amplifies them to illuminate surrounding objects, and captures the reflected signals using a self-mixing RF architecture to extract baseband features. This hardware innovation enables robust Doppler and angular feature extraction from ambient OFDM signals. To support downstream applications, we propose a cross-modal learning framework focusing on human activity recognition, featuring a streamlined training process that leverages an off-the-shelf vision model to supervise radio model training. We have developed a prototype of ARS and validated its effectiveness through extensive experiments using ambient 5G signals, demonstrating accurate human skeleton estimation and body mask segmentation applications.

Goal-Oriented Semantic Communication for ISAC-Enabled Robotic Obstacle Avoidance

We investigate an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)-enabled BS for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) obstacle avoidance task, and propose a goal-oriented semantic communication (GOSC) framework for the BS to transmit sensing and command and control (C&C) signals efficiently and effectively. Our GOSC framework establishes a closed loop for sensing-C&C generation-sensing and C&C transmission: For sensing, a Kalman filter (KF) is applied to continuously predict UAV positions, mitigating the reliance of UAV position acquisition on continuous sensing signal transmission, and enhancing position estimation accuracy through sensing-prediction fusion. Based on the refined estimation position provided by the KF, we develop a Mahalanobis distance-based dynamic window approach (MD-DWA) to generate precise C&C signals under uncertainty, in which we derive the mathematical expression of the minimum Mahalanobis distance required to guarantee collision avoidance. Finally, for efficient sensing and C&C signal transmission, we propose an effectiveness-aware deep Q-network (E-DQN) to determine the transmission of sensing and C&C signals based on their value of information (VoI). The VoI of sensing signals is quantified by the reduction in uncertainty entropy of UAV's position estimation, while the VoI of C&C signals is measured by their contribution to UAV navigation improvement. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness of our proposed GOSC framework. Compared to the conventional ISAC transmission framework that transmits sensing and C&C signals at every time slot, GOSC achieves the same 100% task success rate while reducing the number of transmitted sensing and C&C signals by 92.4% and the number of transmission time slots by 85.5%.

3D aperture-engineered diffractive neural networks for super-resolution electromagnetic wave computing

The rapid progress in 6G communication and high-bandwidth radar has driven an unprecedented surge in the spatial density of signal sources, resulting in an increasingly congested electromagnetic (EM) environment. When resolving closely spaced signals and interference, existing architectures are strictly bounded by the inherent diffraction limits of two-dimensional (2D) physical apertures, hindering super-resolution sensing and multi-interference mitigation in complex scenarios. Here, we present a 3D aperture-engineered diffractive neural network (AE-DNN) that achieves super-resolution sensing and computing by extending the traditional 2D aperture into 3D. The 3D aperture engineering framework is realized by constructing deep cascaded metasurface layers so that the diffractive propagation from oblique incident fields can be layer-wise modulated and piecewise encoded for perceiving EM fields far exceeding physical aperture limits. The N-layer AE-DNN has the capability to achieve ~N times higher angular resolution than the 2D aperture diffraction limit. The multi-dimensional synthetic aperture (MSA) training is developed to achieve speed-of-light coherent synthesis of the 3D aperture and integrate neural network-based modeling of multi-dimensional metasurface modulation. By orthogonalizing array response vectors in the analog domain, AE-DNN performs parallel super-resolution angle estimation, source number estimation, and source separation for up to 10 independent coherent or incoherent sources. Experimental results across the 36-41 GHz band demonstrate that AE-DNN resolves and suppresses closely spaced multi-interference by ~20 dB, enhances communication capacity by 13.5X, and reduces latency by three orders of magnitude. AE-DNN heralds a paradigm shift in signal processing for advanced radar and 6G communications.

Federated Multi Agent Deep Learning and Neural Networks for Advanced Distributed Sensing in Wireless Networks

Multi-agent deep learning (MADL), including multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL), distributed/federated training, and graph-structured neural networks, is becoming a unifying framework for decision-making and inference in wireless systems where sensing, communication, and computing are tightly coupled. Recent 5G-Advanced and 6G visions strengthen this coupling through integrated sensing and communication, edge intelligence, open programmable RAN, and non-terrestrial/UAV networking, which create decentralized, partially observed, time-varying, and resource-constrained control problems. This survey synthesizes the state of the art, with emphasis on 2021-2025 research, on MADL for distributed sensing and wireless communications. We present a task-driven taxonomy across (i) learning formulations (Markov games, Dec-POMDPs, CTDE), (ii) neural architectures (GNN-based radio resource management, attention-based policies, hierarchical learning, and over-the-air aggregation), (iii) advanced techniques (federated reinforcement learning, communication-efficient federated deep RL, and serverless edge learning orchestration), and (iv) application domains (MEC offloading with slicing, UAV-enabled heterogeneous networks with power-domain NOMA, intrusion detection in sensor networks, and ISAC-driven perceptive mobile networks). We also provide comparative tables of algorithms, training topologies, and system-level trade-offs in latency, spectral efficiency, energy, privacy, and robustness. Finally, we identify open issues including scalability, non-stationarity, security against poisoning and backdoors, communication overhead, and real-time safety, and outline research directions toward 6G-native sense-communicate-compute-learn systems.

FuseFi: Combining Irregularly Sampled CSI from Diverse Communication Packets and Frequency Bands for Wi-Fi Sensing

Existing Wi-Fi sensing systems rely on injecting high-rate probing packets to extract channel state information (CSI), leading to communication degradation and limited deployment flexibility. Although Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is a promising direction, existing solutions still rely on auxiliary packet injection because they exploit only uniform CSI from a single frame type, discarding approximately 70% of naturally available packets. We present FuseFi, a novel Wi-Fi-based ISAC framework that directly exploits irregularly sampled CSI from diverse communication packets across multiple frequency bands, eliminating intrusive packet injection and introducing no sensing-specific communication overhead. FuseFi integrates a CSI sanitization pipeline to harmonize heterogeneous packets and remove burst-induced redundancy, together with a time-aware attention model that learns directly from non-uniform CSI sequences without resampling. We further introduce CommCSI-HAR, a new dataset with irregularly sampled CSI from real-world dual-band communication traffic. Extensive evaluations on this dataset and, separately, on four public sensing tasks across three benchmark datasets show that FuseFi achieves state-of-the-art accuracy with a compact model size, while fully preserving communication throughput.
