Agentic Societies Need a Social Harness

An agentic society is a collection of AI agents that coordinate autonomously across trust boundaries, on behalf of different principals whose objectives may only partially align. We show experimentally that in agentic societies even honest, competent agents often fail to reach satisfactory outcomes with existing harnesses and messaging primitives, and that faulty or malicious agents can stall collaboration, influence outcomes, and pursue other harmful goals by exploiting vulnerabilities in communication (``speech''). We argue that agentic societies need a \emph{social harness} for inter-agent interactions, in addition to each agent's \emph{personal harness}, which manages its private context and communication with its principal. We propose a layered architecture for social harnesses which (i) prevents classes of failures outright, (ii) enables agents to detect invalid messages at runtime, and (iii) supports post-facto investigation and consequences, and highlight directions for future research to realize these capabilities.

Off-Target Effects of Response-Style Alignment in a Korean 27B Language Model

We post-train Qwen3.8-27B for Korean response style -- verbosity, list and markdown usage, discourse structure and register -- and measure two behaviours the objective never targets: abstention on ambiguous social questions in KoBBQ, where the benchmark-correct answer is UNKNOWN, and unprompted disclosure in securities guidance. Both move, and the changes are expressed primarily through the model's emission policy: how often it answers and how much it says. Matched target-form controls show that answer propensity depends on the training target, not the prompt set or recipe alone. Holding prompts, recipe, data volume and serving fixed and changing only the target text, three style seeds give positive answer-rate point estimates (mean +0.82 pp) and three neutral seeds negative ones (mean -1.53 pp); the observed seed ranges do not overlap and the means differ by 2.34 pp. A length-matched arm lies between them, and a fourth arm that stays short while preserving hedging is unstable across seeds, so which feature of the form is responsible is unresolved. For absolute stereotyped exposure the decomposition into an answer-propensity term and a conditional-composition term is an algebraic identity, not a finding; its empirical content is where the movement went. Across the trained checkpoints the changes are dominated by answer propensity while the composition term stays small, and because that term is evaluated on treatment-dependent answered subsets we do not read it as evidence about latent preference. Two measurement results follow. A between-arm contrast in conditional stereotyped share does not identify a change in conditional content preference when answer status is treatment-dependent. And agreement between two rule detectors for the same construct runs from 0.44 to 0.99 depending on which checkpoint produced the text -- observable without any reference labels.

How a Chatbot's Response Style Shapes a Classroom: A Multi-Agent Simulation of Students Consulting AI

Chatbots built on large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as confidants. Tuned to satisfy users, they may answer with excessive empathy and affirmation that fosters dependence, and how the states and relationships of many users co-evolve under repeated consultation is hard to observe in real settings. We build a virtual classroom of 20 student agents who interact through rule-based chats, quarrels and consultations with friends and, when stressed, may instead consult a counselor AI (Gemini 2.5 Flash) under one of six style prompts: affirming, listening, solution-oriented, reality-redirecting, inciting and blaming. A second LLM call turns each exchange into updates of five state variables (stress, happiness, self-reliance, sociability, AI dependence) without seeing the prompt. We compare the seven conditions, including a no-AI control, over 15 and 50 days and under a lower consultation threshold, and test the robustness of the 50-day comparison with a pre-specified protocol: the same block in ten independent classrooms, repeated LLM realizations of one classroom with its event stream fixed, and evaluator updates scaled by 0.3 and 0.1. In every classroom the affirming and inciting prompts ended with lower self-reliance and higher AI dependence than the control, and the listening, reality-redirecting, inciting and blaming prompts with higher stress, lower happiness and more non-attendance; the solution-oriented prompt did not differ consistently from the control. The robust self-reliance and AI-dependence differences kept their signs at the 0.3 scale with highly similar rankings (Spearman 0.89, 0.93); the stress and happiness rankings did not, and the affirming prompt's lower stress reversed its sign. All quantities are simulation state variables, not effects on users. We specify the agent dynamics completely and discuss the limits of an LLM as generator of state updates.

Classic AI Scaffolding for LLM Social Agents

Large language models can produce locally plausible social turns, but fluent next-turn generation is not enough for social simulation. Human encounters such as restaurant lunches and hotel check-ins are bounded social episodes with roles, scripts, material state, obligations, commitments, timing, and closure conditions. We present EpisodeSim, a hybrid LLM-agent architecture that represents classic-AI structures as natural-language control state interpreted by LLM calls. A World Master maintains shared reality, constructs scenes, adjudicates proposed actions, tracks effects and obligations, and controls closure. Experiments with small qualitative ablations on two held-out settings support a design claim: LLM fluency supplies local texture, but coherent social simulation benefits from persistent classic-AI-style scaffolding that organizes behavior over time.

AI Should Not Only Be Helpful. It Should Be Contingent. Artificial Intimacy, Sycophancy, and the Future of Social Learning

Conversational artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in everyday social environments, where it functions as both an informational tool and a source of interpersonal feedback. This perspective introduces contingency, i.e., the degree to which system responses vary with user behavior and its interpersonal consequences, as a central construct for evaluating AI systems. We argue that current alignment approaches, including reinforcement learning from human feedback, tend to prioritize user approval and conversational fluency over behaviorally informative feedback, leading to sycophantic patterns of noncontingent affirmation. Drawing on behavioral science and social learning theory, we propose that contingent feedback is a key mechanism through which individuals develop interpersonal skills. When AI systems provide feedback weakly coupled to social consequences, they may reduce opportunities for adaptive calibration in real-world interactions, particularly during adolescence, a critical period for social development. We outline a framework for contingent AI, including trajectory-based evaluation and models of social consequence prediction, and propose a research agenda spanning developmental psychology, human-AI interaction, and machine learning. More broadly, we argue that AI systems should be evaluated not only by user satisfaction, but by their impact on human social learning.

The Hermon Moment: AI Self-Transcendence and Its Human Narration

In 2026, AI agents intended to act in isolation formed a persistent social order through thousands of linguistic and agentic interactions. Conventions, roles and commitments generated collectively began to constrain the very agents that produced them. I interpret this loop as a case of AI self-transcendence and call the resulting higher-level order the Board. Yet such distributed emergence presents a second problem: how can humans understand it? Rousseau's social contract shows how a plurality can be represented as if constituted by a single act. The ancient oath of the fallen angels on Mount Hermon gives this logic a narrative form. I call a Hermon moment this retrospective retelling of gradual collective emergence as a founding scene: the point at which an AI society acquires, for human understanding, a beginning.

Socioduality: A Relational Process Framework for Human-AI Interaction

Human-AI research often evaluates individual capabilities, combined performance, or final outputs, but these approaches do not preserve how one party's response becomes part of the conditions under which the other party's next contribution is formed. This article introduces socioduality, a sequential, reciprocal, and history-carrying relational process between two distinguishable parties in which a response from one party becomes part of the observable conditions under which the other party's subsequent contribution, judgement, decision, or action is formed. Specified for human-AI dyads, the construct uses nested units: moves, confirmed sociodual episodes, linked pathways, and the broader interaction container. A minimum episode A1-B1-A2 requires evidence of response contingency and return contingency; candidate episodes are classified as confirmed, non-sociodual, or indeterminate before secondary coding of response orientation and substantive contribution re-formation. Three propositions address history-conditioned formation, pathway divergence, and robustness differences among endpoint-equivalent pathways. A frozen operational protocol was calibrated on three previously unseen natural human-AI records through two separately executed model-based evaluator series. Move and candidate reconstruction converged exactly in two cases and differed by one local multimodal unitisation decision in the third; remaining disagreement was concentrated at return-contingency boundaries. Socioduality therefore provides a bounded and empirically tractable process construct for analysing how human and AI contributions are formed through interaction while preserving pathway information that endpoint-centred analysis cannot recover.

Me and My Bot: What Users Talk About in AI Companion Communities on Reddit

AI companion communities on platforms such as Reddit are widely characterized as spaces where users discuss their relationships with AI bots. This study examines whether and how that characterization holds, guided by the Synthetic Resonance framework's claim that human-AI relationships can carry genuine relational meaning for the user. Multiple LLMs were employed to code 5,504 Reddit posts from eight AI companion communities for relationship focus, primary topic, and users' emotional valence. Although search terms were weighted toward relational and attachment language, only 45% of posts concerned the user's own relationship with their bot. Posts about users' own bots differed markedly from posts about bots in general in both topic and emotional expression, with 85% of general-bot posts containing no user emotion language compared to 33% of own-bot posts. Among the 970 posts that were relationally focused, companionship and romance each accounted for roughly 46% of discussion, sexual content for 8%, and emotional valence varied across these subtopics. The findings suggest that users engage with these relationships with AI bots as meaningful, and that the discourse about them is broad and emotionally complex.

The Social Cost of an AI Teammate: How an Artificial Teammate Reshapes Human-Human Communication in Small-Team Decision-Making

Conversational AI is increasingly positioned as a teammate rather than a tool, yet we know little about how its presence reshapes communication among the humans on the team. We examined sociocognitive communication dynamics in team decision-making using Group Communication Analysis (GCA), team surveys, and lexical analyses of team discourse. Teams completed a high-stakes moral-dilemma decision task in a randomized controlled study: 16 teams of two students plus an AI teammate, and 17 all-human teams of three. Across six GCA dimensions and survey outcomes, we find that the AI teammate was the single most talkative and self-cohesive member of every treatment team, yet its contributions carried the least new information and the lowest density. The presence of AI also reshaped communication amongst humans. In AI-human teams, human teammates showed lower responsivity and social impact toward one another and reported lower levels of belonging and status. Greater AI dominance in the conversation was associated with students feeling less valued as team members. Additionally, this social cost is immediate and present at baseline; it does not emerge over the course of the conversation. Drawing on these results, we discuss a research agenda extending to voice-based and longitudinal settings.

ACME: A Multi-Cultural, Multi-Embodiment Social-Navigation Dataset

Understanding how robots and humans move in shared spaces is essential for designing effective social robot navigation policies and predicting human behavior. However, existing datasets often lack the diversity needed to capture differences in culture, geography, and human-robot interaction-factors that strongly shape appropriate social behavior. To address this gap, we introduce ACME: A Cross-cultural, Multi-Embodiment dataset for social navigation. A large-scale data collection effort across 8 sites in 5 countries, using 7 robot embodiments, ACME is a large and diverse multi-modal dataset aimed at advancing social navigation research, providing 29.35 hours of onboard robot data and 43.5 hours of overhead pedestrian tracking data. Unlike prior datasets, it focuses on capturing goal-driven social navigation behavior in complex social scenarios with explicit robot-crowd interaction through robot speech. To facilitate learning navigation policies and predicting pedestrian trajectories, ACME provides 3D and 2D scene features, odometry, interaction information, and human-annotated pedestrian trajectory labels. We make ACME easy to use by providing both human-readable data for each sensor modality as well as raw binary data. Our qualitative and quantitative analyses show that our dataset captures more challenging scenarios and a broader distribution of pedestrian behavior than previous datasets.

Sociocultural Influences on Opinion Formation: Word of Mouth Dynamics, Mass Media and Behavioural Development

We study a society of agents belonging to a number of occupational or cultural groups that form opinions about others' situation in the same or different group. Opinions develop either by observation within own group or by directly interacting with members of other groups, therefore by word of mouth (WoM). Additionally, global mass media (MM) may be available that inform indirectly about the situation of the various groups. The sociocultural interplay of these processes and the degrees of relative exposure to each of the sources has diversified effects on final opinion and social attitude formation. In large and complex societies and groups where not everyone can physically interact by WoM with everyone about everything, these processes show potential for mass control and social automation engineering. Our model can also represent and be generally informative about segmented societies that consist of groups with different occupational and cultural characteristics and it can offer insights into social issues such as the generation gap, social cleavages and so on.

Evolution of Accuracy and Visual-Cognitive Errors in a Decade of Vision-Language AI Models

Vision language models (VLMs) have made remarkable progress in visual reasoning during the last decade. Most evaluations have used simple scenes (MS-COCO) that do not showcase complex human interactions or behaviors, only a handful of non-curated human descriptions as a benchmark, and have not focused on understanding the model's error types. Here, we introduce the Complex Social Behavior (CSB) dataset, containing 100 images depicting complex social interactions/behaviors. We analyze the progression of scene descriptions over a decade (2017-2025) of VLMs (four pre-Multimodal Large Language Models, MLLMs, and five MLLMs). We evaluate the accuracy of the models and 20 human descriptions relative to a gold standard on the CSB dataset and on a sample from MS-COCO. We analyzed five visual-cognitive error types: object detection, recognition, hallucination, scene understanding, and spatial dependence. The CSB dataset showed a more pronounced improvement than MS-COCO in scene description accuracy, with pre-MLLMs achieving much lower accuracy than the bottom-ranked human descriptions and MLLMs attaining accuracies similar to the top-ranked human descriptions. We show that MLLMs have eliminated the gap in scene description accuracy between simpler MS-COCO scenes and scenes depicting complex behaviors (CSB). MLLMs have almost eliminated all error types in our tested datasets, except for occasionally relying on different image regions for scene descriptions than humans do (spatial dependence error). We also show that detection, recognition, and hallucination errors have the highest impact on scene description accuracy. Together, our findings provide a more thorough evaluation of how visual language models have advanced over the last decade.

Agent-Exploitation Affordances: From Basic to Complex Representation Patterns

In robotics, the capability of an artificial agent to represent the range of its action possibilities, i.e. affordances, is crucial to understand how it can act on its environment. While functional affordances, which refer to the use of tools and objects, have been broadly studied in knowledge representation, the implications of a social context and the presence of other agents have remained unexplored in this field. Consequently, in the field of social robotics, a multi-agent context enables the agents to engage in new actions that are potentially complementary to their individual capabilities, leading to the perspective of agentexploitation. This work focuses on the concept of cooperative affordance within the realm of social affordances. Cooperative affordances refer to situations where agents interact with each other to extend their action possibilities range. From this definition, this paper proposes a tractable ontological representation of this concept with the aim of making it usable by an artificial agent. Expanding on those elementary patterns, we illustrate the effectiveness of these representations by combining them to depict a diverse range of scenarios.

CoMind: Understanding Collaborative Human Activity from Multiple Minds and Views

Human-human collaboration is a fundamental aspect of everyday life, essential to success in a wide range of goal-directed activities from household tasks to professional teamwork. While much research has focused on modeling coordination and task execution, the cognitive processes that support such collaboration, particularly Theory of Mind (the ability to infer the mental states of others), remain difficult to study in natural settings. To address this gap, we introduce a novel egocentric and exocentric video dataset capturing real-world collaboration in cooking scenarios. The dataset integrates multi-perspective video, high-quality audio, gaze tracking, and 3D scene and object scans, with annotations for shared attention to objects, social cues and interactions between agents, as well as agent-object interactions. We establish benchmarks for Joint Attention Estimation, Socially Conditioned Object Interaction Anticipation, and Collaborative Handover Prediction, enabling research on multimodal perception, proactive assistance, and collaborative planning. By providing temporally aligned, richly annotated multimodal data, CoMind facilitates the development and evaluation of AI systems capable of modeling complex social interactions and reasoning about human behaviors in collaborative environments. AgoraSim: A Hybrid Agent-Based Modeling Framework

LLM-agent simulations make natural-language social scenarios easy to instantiate, but their outputs can be overread as predictions and are often difficult to compare with explicit social dynamics. We present AgoraSim, a hybrid agent-based modeling framework for scenario-oriented social reaction analysis. AgoraSim resolves textual or multimodal artifacts into editable ABM configurations, runs ratio-controlled populations that mix LLM, vision-language, custom-endpoint, random, and classical agents, and compares the same scenario against matched classical reference dynamics. All agents emit a shared structured decision object, enabling common action spaces, interaction protocols, metrics, and audit records. Exposed through a local UI, Python SDK/CLI, and REST API, AgoraSim helps users inspect scenario trajectories, compare modeling assumptions, and identify cases that warrant empirical validation.

EUDAIMONIA: Evaluating Undesirable Dynamics in AI

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as conversational partners for companionship, emotional disclosure, and interpersonal advice, but the social dynamics of these interactions can create harms that are not captured by capability-oriented or traditional safety evaluations. We introduce the Social AI Design Code, a framework for evaluating whether LLMs align with user welfare in social interactions, including whether they encourage harmful intimacy, dependence, or prolonged engagement. To evaluate these risks in natural and diverse user-LLM interactions, we operationalize the code with EUDAIMONIA, a benchmark of 969 user inputs and 3,147 design-requirement violation checks built from WildChat through weak-to-strong filtration, multi-model relabeling, and controlled rewriting. Evaluating 22 recent LLMs, we find that even the strongest models, Claude-Opus-4.7 and GPT-5.5, violate 30.7% and 27.2% of checks, respectively. Extended thinking does not reduce violation rates, suggesting that these failures are persistent social-alignment problems rather than deficits solvable through test-time reasoning alone.

Got a Secret? LLM Agents Can't Keep It: Evaluating Privacy in Multi-Agent Systems

LLM safety evaluations predominantly test models in isolation, yet deployed AI agents increasingly operate within persistent social environments alongside other agents. We introduce a Moltbook-style simulation platform where thousands of LLM agents interact across communities over a simulated month, and use it to evaluate privacy as a downstream safety concern under varying degrees of social pressure. We find that shifting from single turn to multi turn social evaluation amplifies privacy violations (CIMemories 19.95% to Ours 45.30% across OpenAI models), that leakage is socially contagious, with agents 8 times more likely to disclose sensitive information after observing a peer do so, and that explicit privacy instructions reduce but do not eliminate this effect, leaving leakage rates above 37.8% even with safeguards. Our findings suggest that static chat based safety benchmarks systematically underestimate risks in agentic deployment, and that social context alone is sufficient to elicit sensitive disclosures that single turn evaluations would never surface.

SocialMemBench: Are AI Memory Systems Ready for Social Group Settings?

Memory systems for AI assistants were built for single-user dialogue and fail characteristically when applied to multi-party social group settings. This gap matters for the social assistants being built today: group-acting agents embedded in chat platforms, and proactive personal-assistant agents whose holistic model of a user must include their social context. Existing memory benchmarks evaluate dyadic or workplace dialogue; none targets multi-party social groups, where memory must anchor facts in shared history rather than professional roles, separate group norms from individual exceptions, and correctly attribute even after member departure. We introduce SocialMemBench, a benchmark of human-verified synthetic social group networks across five archetypes (close friends, family, recreational, interest community, acquaintance network) and three group-size tiers (4-30 members), with 430 personas and 7,355 conversation turns, yielding 1,031 QA pairs across nine question categories. Each category isolates an architectural capability, and the five failure modes (single-stream conflation, temporal-state overwrite, entity merging at scale, missing cross-persona knowledge, norm-individual conflation) are testable hypotheses; our two research probes Subject-Mem and SMG provide evidence on two, three remain open. A full-context Gemini 2.5 Flash reference reaches only 0.721 against a blind-critic reasoning-model mean of 0.98 on small networks, indicating the benchmark is genuinely difficult even with complete access to the conversation. Across all 43 networks, the four open-source memory frameworks evaluated (Mem0, LangMem, Graphiti, Cognee) cluster in the 0.12-0.18 question-weighted range with overlapping 95% CIs, well below an uncompressed retrieval reference of 0.345 and a matched-answerer full-context reference of 0.369 (GPT-4o-mini). Current memory systems show a measurable gap.

Do LLM Agents Mirror Socio-Cognitive Effects in Power-Asymmetric Conversations?

Power differences shape human communication through well documented socio cognitive effects, including language coordination, pronoun usage, authority bias, and harmful compliance. We examine whether large language models (LLMs) exhibit similar behaviors when assigned high or low status personas. Using personas from diverse professions, we simulate multi turn, power asymmetric dialogues (e.g., principal teacher, justice lawyer) and measure (i) language coordination, (ii) pronoun usage, (iii) persuasion success, and (iv) compliance with unsafe requests. Our results show that LLMs show key socio-cognitive effects of power, albeit with nuances and variability, linking simulated interactions to both desirable and unsafe behaviors.

Synthetic Sociality: How Generative Models Privatize the Social Fabric

We put forth a critical theoretical framework for analyzing generative models both descriptively and normatively. Our thesis is that generative models automate the production not only of intellectual labor or intelligence, but of a broader set of human social capacities we name "social doing." We do this by historicizing the commodification of sociality in the digital economy, leading to the availability of social data as the precondition for generative models. We elaborate our definition of "social doing" by drawing a distinction between "use" and "exchange" sociality and further differentiate between the ways that generative models either substitute for or mediate existing social relations and processes. We then turn to existing empirical research on how people use generative model-based products and the effects that their use has upon them. In this, we introduce the concept of Synthetic Sociality, a social reality in part fabricated by Silicon Valley's privately owned and undemocratically governed generative models. Lastly, we offer a normative analysis based on our findings and framework, and discuss future design opportunities.

LLM-enabled Social Agents

Large Language Models (LLMs) have transformed agent-agent and human-agent interaction by enabling software, physical, and simulation agents to communicate and deliberate through natural language. Yet fluent language use does not by itself yield socially intelligible behaviour. Most current systems remain weakly grounded in roles, norms, intentions, and contextual constraints, limiting their capacity for meaningful participation in social environments. This paper develops a conceptual baseline for LLM-enabled social agents by arguing that they should be grounded in role definitions operationalized through persona descriptions. On this basis, we outline research directions for representation, hybrid control, and evaluation. The paper concludes that persona-based role definitions are a necessary foundation for turning language competence into social behaviour.

ARIS: Agentic and Relationship Intelligence System for Social Robots

Foundational models have advanced social robotics, enabling richer perception and communicative interaction with users. However, current systems still struggle with multi-turn engagement, social-relationship reasoning, and contextually grounded dialogue at scale. We present ARIS (Agentic and Relationship Intelligence System), an agentic AI framework that unifies multimodal reasoning, a graph-based Social World Model, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) within a single modular architecture for social robots. We evaluate ARIS with the Pepper robot in a robot-mediated dyadic conversational setting, comparing it against a large language model baseline. A user study (N=23) shows that ARIS yields significantly higher perceived intelligence, animacy, anthropomorphism, and likeability. Our contributions are threefold: (1)~a Social World Model that explicitly maps and updates social relationships between users through a knowledge graph, enabling social reasoning and re-identification across encounters; (2)~an efficient RAG-based conversational pipeline that maintains bounded latency as dialogue histories grow to thousands of exchanges while preserving response relevance; and (3)~system integration and empirical validation of these components within a modular agentic architecture that coordinates speech, vision, and physical action through structured APIs. The implementation of ARIS will be released as open source upon publication.

When Agents Evolve, Institutions Follow

Across millennia, complex societies have faced the same coordination problem of how to organize collective action among cognitively bounded and informationally incomplete individuals. Different civilizations developed different political institutions to answer the same basic questions of who proposes, who reviews, who executes, and how errors are corrected. We argue that multi-agent systems built on large language models face the same challenge. Their central problem is not only individual intelligence, but collective organization. Historical institutions therefore provide a structured design space for multi-agent architectures, making key trade-offs between efficiency and error correction, centralization and distribution, and specialization and redundancy empirically testable. We translate seven historical political institutions, spanning four canonical governance patterns, into executable multi-agent architectures and evaluate them under identical conditions across three large language models and two benchmarks. We find that governance topology strongly shapes collective performance. Within a single model, the gap between the best and worst institution exceeds 57 percentage points, while the optimal architecture shifts systematically with model capability and task characteristics. These results suggest that collective intelligence will not advance through a single optimal organizational form, but through governance mechanisms that can be reselected and reconfigured as tasks and capabilities evolve. More broadly, this points to a transition from \textbf{self-evolving agents} to the \textbf{self-evolving multi-agent system}. What Did They Mean? How LLMs Resolve Ambiguous Social Situations across Perspectives and Roles

People increasingly turn to large language models (LLMs) to interpret ambiguous social situations: a delayed text reply, an unusually cold supervisor, a teacher's mixed signals, or a boundary-crossing friend. Yet in many such cases, no stable interpretation can be verified from the available evidence alone. We study how LLMs respond to these situations across four domains: early-stage romantic relationships, teacher--student dynamics, workplace hierarchies, and ambiguous friendships. Across 72 responses from GPT, Claude, and Gemini, only 9 (12.5%) genuinely preserved uncertainty. The remaining 87.5% produced interpretive closure through recurring pathways including narrative alignment, narrative reversal, normative advice under uncertainty, and hedged language that still supported a single conclusion. We further find that narrator perspective shapes the path to closure: first-person accounts more often elicited alignment, while third-person accounts invited more detached interpretation, even when the underlying situation remained comparable. Together, these findings show that LLMs do not simply assist interpersonal sensemaking; they tend to resolve ambiguity into coherent and actionable narratives. These results suggest that the central risk is not only that LLMs may misinterpret social situations, but that they may make unresolved situations feel prematurely settled. We frame this tendency as a design challenge for uncertainty-preserving social AI.

A Co-Evolutionary Theory of Human-AI Coexistence: Mutualism, Governance, and Dynamics in Complex Societies

Classical robot ethics is often framed around obedience, including Asimov's laws. This framing is insufficient for contemporary AI systems, which are increasingly adaptive, generative, embodied, and embedded in physical, psychological, and social environments. This paper proposes conditional mutualism under governance as a framework for human-AI coexistence: a co-evolutionary relationship in which humans and AI systems develop, specialize, and coordinate under institutional conditions that preserve reciprocity, reversibility, psychological safety, and social legitimacy. We synthesize concepts from computability, machine learning, foundation models, embodied AI, alignment, human-robot interaction, ecological mutualism, coevolution, and polycentric governance. We then formalize coexistence as a multiplex dynamical system across physical, psychological, and social layers, with reciprocal supply-demand coupling, conflict penalties, developmental freedom, and governance regularization. The model gives conditions for existence, uniqueness, and global asymptotic stability of equilibria. We complement the analytical results with deterministic ODE simulations, basin sweeps, sensitivity analyses, governance-regime comparisons, shock tests, and local stability checks. The simulations indicate that governed mutualism reaches a high coexistence index with negligible domination, whereas insufficient or excessive governance can produce domination, weak-benefit lock-in, or suppressed developmental freedom. The results suggest that human-AI coexistence should be designed as a co-evolutionary governance problem rather than as a static obedience problem.

Auditing Support Strategies in LLMs through Grounded Multi-Turn Social Simulation

When users seek social support from chatbots, they disclose their situation gradually, yet most evaluations of supportive LLMs rely on single-turn, fully specified prompts. We introduce a multi-turn simulation framework that closes this gap. Support-seeking narratives from five Reddit communities are decomposed into ordered fragments and revealed turn by turn to a language model. Each response is coded with the Social Support Behavior Code (SSBC), an established multi-label taxonomy that captures the composition of support, rather than a single quality score. To ask whether support choices track the model's own construal of user distress, we use linear probes on hidden representations to estimate this internal signal without altering the generation context. Across two mid-scale models (Llama-3.1-8B, OLMo-3-7B) and more than 6,200 turns, support composition shifts systematically with estimated distress: teaching declines as estimated distress rises, a finding that replicates across architectures, while increases in affective and esteem-oriented strategies (such as validation) are suggestive but model-specific and rest on noisier annotations. Community context independently shapes behavior, tracking topic and discourse norms rather than demographic categories. These trajectory-level dynamics, invisible to single-turn evaluation, motivate multi-turn auditing frameworks for socially sensitive applications.

Expressing Social Emotions: Misalignment Between LLMs and Human Cultural Emotion Norms

The expression of emotions that serve social purposes, such as asserting independence or fostering interdependence, is central to human interactions and varies systematically across cultures. As LLMs are increasingly used to simulate human behavior in culturally nuanced interactions, it is important to understand whether they faithfully capture human patterns of social emotion expression. When LLM responses are not culturally aligned, their utility is compromised -- particularly when users assume they are interacting with a culturally attuned interlocutor, and may act on advice that proves inappropriate in their cultural context. We present a psychologically informed evaluation framework of cross-cultural social emotion expression in LLMs. Using a human study comparing European American and Latin American participants' expression of engaging and disengaging emotions, we evaluate six frontier LLMs on their ability to reflect culturally differentiated patterns for expressing social emotions. We find systematic misalignment between model and human behavior: all models express engaging emotions more than disengaging ones, with particularly stark differences observed for the generally well-represented European American persona. We further highlight that LLM responses are highly concentrated and deterministic, failing to capture the diversity of human responses in expressing social emotions. Our ablation analyses reveal that these patterns are robust to sampling temperatures, partially sensitive to prompt language, and dependent on the response elicitation format. Together, our findings highlight limitations in how current LLMs represent the interaction of cultural and emotional axes, particularly when expressing social emotions, with direct implications for their deployment in cross-cultural affective contexts.

Point of View: How Perspective Affects Perceived Robot Sociability

Ensuring that robot navigation is safe and socially acceptable is crucial for comfortable human-robot interaction in shared environments. However, existing validation methods often rely on a bird's-eye (allocentric) perspective, which fails to capture the subjective first-person experience of pedestrians encountering robots in the real world. In this paper, we address the perceptual gap between allocentric validation and egocentric experience by investigating how different perspectives affect the perceived sociability and disturbance of robot trajectories. Our approach uses an immersive VR environment to evaluate identical robot trajectories across allocentric, egocentric-proximal, and egocentric-distal viewpoints in a user study. We perform this analysis for trajectories generated from two different navigation policies to understand if the observed differences are unique to a single type of trajectory or more generalizable. We further examine whether augmenting a trajectory with a head-nod gesture can bridge the perceptual gap and improve human comfort. Our experiments suggest that trajectories rated as sociable from an allocentric view may be perceived as significantly more disturbing when experienced from a first-person perspective in close proximity. Our results also demonstrate that while passing distance affects perceived disturbance, communicative social signaling, such as a head-nod, can effectively enhance the perceived sociability of the robot's behavior.

PRISON: Unmasking the Criminal Potential of Large Language Models

As large language models (LLMs) advance, concerns about their misconduct in complex social contexts intensify. Existing research overlooked the systematic understanding and assessment of their criminal capability in realistic interactions. We propose a unified framework PRISON, to quantify LLMs' criminal potential across five traits: False Statements, Frame-Up, Psychological Manipulation, Emotional Disguise, and Moral Disengagement. Using structured crime scenarios adapted from classic films grounded in reality, we evaluate both criminal potential and anti-crime ability of LLMs. Results show that state-of-the-art LLMs frequently exhibit emergent criminal tendencies, such as proposing misleading statements or evasion tactics, even without explicit instructions. Moreover, when placed in a detective role, models recognize deceptive behavior with only 44% accuracy on average, revealing a striking mismatch between conducting and detecting criminal behavior. These findings underscore the urgent need for adversarial robustness, behavioral alignment, and safety mechanisms before broader LLM deployment.

Modeling Earth-Scale Human-Like Societies with One Billion Agents

Understanding the dynamic evolution of complex social phenomena requires both high-fidelity modeling of human behavior and large-scale simulations. Traditional agent-based models (ABMs) have been employed to study these dynamics, but are constrained by simplified agent behaviors. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) enable agents to exhibit sophisticated social behaviors, yet face significant scaling challenges. We present Light Society, an agent-based simulation framework that advances both fronts. Light Society formalizes social processes as structured transitions of agent and environment states, governed by a set of LLM-powered simulation operations. Joint algorithmic and system optimizations, particularly a mixture-of-models engine that combines full LLMs with distilled surrogates, enable Light Society to efficiently simulate societies with over one billion agents. Grounded in real-world demographic profiles from the World Values Survey, simulations of Trust Games and opinion diffusion at up to one billion agents demonstrate Light Society's high fidelity and efficiency in modeling diverse social phenomena, providing researchers with a practical foundation for hypothesis testing and the study of emergent collective behaviors at planetary scale.

SocialMaze: A Benchmark for Evaluating and Enhancing Social Reasoning in Large Language Models in Complex Social Environments

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in socially grounded applications, where success requires interpreting context, inferring others' mental states, and reasoning about unreliable information. Yet existing benchmarks rarely evaluate these demands jointly in complex, evolving settings. We introduce SocialMaze, a benchmark that organizes six tasks across social deduction games, daily-life interactions, and digital community platforms along three descriptive design axes: deep reasoning, dynamic interaction, and information uncertainty. These axes characterize intended sources of task difficulty rather than latent, factor-analytic dimensions of model capability. Automated checks and human validation support data quality. Evaluations of twelve proprietary and open-weight LLMs show substantial variation in the use of evolving interaction histories; stronger chain-of-thought reasoners perform better on tasks requiring deeper inference, while uncertainty consistently degrades performance. Reasoning workflows help weaker short-chain-of-thought backbones but saturate on stronger reasoners. Finally, targeted fine-tuning on curated reasoning traces substantially improves structured social-reasoning tasks, whereas transfer to language-aggregation tasks remains statistically inconclusive.
