Learning to Optimize UAV Path Planning for Data Sensing in Wireless Sensor Networks

UAVs have emerged as highly flexible platforms for data sensing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Path planning for UAVs in such tasks plays a key role to assure remote sensing effectiveness and friendly energy consumption. However, existing approaches show two key limitations: i) they are primarily hand-crafted with certain design biases that harm adaptation on unseen tasks. ii) they predominantly assume idealized spatial complexities of actual environments through simplified simulation, causing them to underperform during real-world deployment. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-assisted planning framework, termed Landscape-Aware Meta Differential Evolution (LAMDE), to tackle the mentioned limitations. The major contributions come from the following aspects. We first re-formulate such UAV path planning problem to embrace challenging constraints. To efficiently navigate this highly constrained space, we propose a bi-level learning to optimize approach, where the meta-level is a trainable algorithm configuration policy that meta-learns an adaptable planning strategy for low-level planning algorithm. To address the potential training data scarcity and distribution shift in real-world environments, we introduce a landscape-aware automatic augmentation scheme that enriches training data. At the low-level, a Differential Evolution algorithm is deployed for solving the path planning tasks. To enhance the solving flexibility, we further design a variable-length encoding strategy that dynamically prunes redundant hover points and optimizes continuous flight parameters concurrently within a unified search space. Based on all proposed designs, we meta-train LAMDE and compare it with representative baselines. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that LAMDE achieves state-of-the-art performance on the tested complex UAV path planning tasks in WSN data collection scenarios.

Future-Aware Flow Planning for Safe UAV Target Following

UAV target following in cluttered environments requires anticipating target motion. Followers that use only the current target state can lag behind turns or choose blocked corridors. They may also trade safe near-horizon motion for lower tracking error. We propose a future-aware flow planning framework for state-informed UAV target following. Predicted target futures guide clean UAV trajectory generation through residual signals aligned with the planning horizon. Risk-scored repair of the executable prefix is embedded in the sampling loop. On fixed in-distribution (ID) and out-of-distribution (OOD) receding-horizon benchmarks, the planner improves the safety--tracking trade-off. It matches zero measured ID collision rate and achieves the highest ID safe-tracking time fraction. It also gives the lowest OOD macro-average collision rate and final tracking error among the compared methods. It does not dominate every metric: Future-MPC remains smoother and stronger on some threshold-based OOD success metrics under its hand-designed objective. Controlled comparisons show that future conditioning with the adapter improves candidate generation before safety repair. Simulator-facing tests examine interface perturbations, sensing, and controller execution. These results support horizon-aligned future guidance and embedded prefix repair as complementary components for safe UAV target following under the tested simulation conditions.

Decision Transformer for UAV-Mounted RIS-Assisted Dynamic D2D Communications

This paper studies unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mouted reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted device-to-device (D2D) communication with stochastic link activation. It models UAV motion and attitude, time-varying Rician angles, and angle-dependent RIS reflection. A joint optimization of UAV trajectory, attitude, and RIS phases is formulated to maximize average sum rate under mobility, energy, and hardware constraints. The problem is addressed using deep reinforcement learning and a Decision Transformer trained on expert trajectories from multiple scenarios. Results demonstrate effective cross-scenario generalization, with zero-shot transfer outperforming direct DRL transfer and online fine-tuning achieving competitive performance with fewer interactions.

Energy-Aware Wind-Resilient Routing for Truck-Assisted Multi-UAV Delivery under Wind Uncertainty

Energy feasibility under wind uncertainty is a critical safety issue for low-altitude air-ground delivery. In truck-UAV systems, UAVs complete assigned deliveries and safely return to a mobile truck or depot, while wind-induced propulsion costs vary online and are only partially observable. Existing routing methods often rely on static or deterministic energy models, which may underestimate headwind, crosswind, battery-voltage, and return-feasibility risks. This paper proposes Energy-Aware Wind-Resilient Routing (EWR), an online risk-sensitive planning framework for wind-aware and energy-safe UAV routing. The delivery environment is represented as a time-dependent directed energy graph whose edge costs are updated using delayed noisy wind estimates, payload states, and conservative uncertainty margins. Experiments using synthetic delivery graphs with replayed wind logs from a public truck-UAV delivery dataset show that EWR improves mission success rates and reduces wind-induced return failures.

Model Predictive Planner for UAV Navigation in Non-Convex Air Corridors

This work presents a motion planning framework for UAV navigation in non-convex urban air corridors. The planner is based on a mixed-integer tracking model predictive control formulation that enforces corridor feasibility and dynamic consistency within a single optimization problem. To guarantee convergence to the target and mitigate the occurrence of local minima induced by non-convex geometry, a shortest-path-based offset cost with feasibility constraints is embedded directly into the planning problem. Numerical simulations show that the proposed formulation generates dynamically valid trajectories that satisfy the corridor constraints and converge to the target without relying on external global planning stages.

BC-NMPC: Battery-Constrained NMPC with Propulsion Prediction and Replanning for High-Speed Flight

Trajectory tracking performance of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) degrades during high-speed and agile flight due to the depletion of the battery and subsequent loss of maximum available thrust. In applications such as drone racing, the consequent trajectory tracking error leads to a collision with obstacles and a subsequent failure to complete the race. In this paper, we present a novel method for integrating battery and propulsion system models into a Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) framework to enable real-time prediction of the voltage, consumed current, power, and maximum available thrust of the platform. This enables our approach to account for the dynamic variations in the maximum available thrust of the UAV caused by battery discharge, allowing it to plan for the depleting thrust and improve trajectory tracking performance. A trajectory planning algorithm is implemented to replan the trajectory in-flight based on evolving thrust limits. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified in real-world flight experiments, while the effectiveness of the replanning algorithm is evaluated in simulation. Compared to an uncompensated flight, our novel approach demonstrates achieves a collision-free flight to achieve a 6-fold decrease in tracking Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), a 46 % increase in flight distance, and a 100 % increase in flight time in an obstacle-ridden environment.

CRB-Driven Beamforming and Trajectory Optimization for UAV-assisted ISAC System

In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where a UAV enhances the sensing capability of a base station (BS) towards a target while ensuring reliable communication towards a downlink user. This architecture is practically attractive for future wireless networks due to the UAV's controllable mobility and adaptive sensing coverage in wireless environments. The sensing performance is characterized by the average Cramér-Rao bound (CRB), which quantifies the minimum variance of the unbiased angle-of-arrival estimation. To enhance the sensing performance, the UAV trajectory and beamforming parameters are jointly optimized under power and mobility constraints, while satisfying communication requirements to the downlink user. To address the resulting non-convex problem, we employ null-space projection for beamforming design and adopt deep reinforcement learning for the trajectory optimization over a discrete-time scale. In each time slot, beamforming is optimized based on the channel state information to improve CRB performance while mitigating interference between the BS and the communication user. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the time-averaged CRB by over 10%, compared with the ISAC system without UAV assistance, and also achieves a higher sensing accuracy than both the fixed-UAV-trajectory and the maximum-ratio-transmission-based beamforming benchmarks.

Dynamical Vehicle Orienteering Problem for Multi-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

This paper introduces the Dynamical Vehicle Orienteering Problem (DVOP), a generalization of the Orienteering Problem (OP). The OP maximizes the reward collected from spatial targets under a limited travel budget; the DVOP extends it by accounting for both external and vehicle-actuated forces. We study the DVOP in the context of multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight planning, using a three-dimensional Point-Mass Model (PMM) constrained by maximum velocity and acceleration magnitudes and subject to gravitational acceleration, with the travel budget expressed as a maximum flight time. Because the DVOP couples reward maximization with time-optimal trajectory planning, it cannot be formulated as a simple graph problem and solved exactly without relaxing or under-actuating the vehicle dynamics. We therefore propose two solution approaches: a Branch-and-Bound (BnB) procedure that combines Non-Linear Programming (NLP) and Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to provide high-quality solutions, and a Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) metaheuristic that supplies an initial reward bound and scales to instances intractable for the BnB. The BnB relies on a novel MILP formulation of travel costs based on minimum-time trajectory primitives through target triplets, yielding a tight reward upper bound, while the LNS uses limited thrust decomposition to compute fast, high-quality PMM trajectories. Experiments on benchmark instances show improvements of up to 37 % over state-of-the-art solutions for the Kinematic Orienteering Problem, and a real-world deployment on a multi-rotor UAV verifies the proposed PMM solution trajectories.

Environment Parameter Gradient Theorem for Policy-Environment Co-Design in Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning (RL) is traditionally concerned with learning a control policy for a fixed environment. In many engineering systems, however, the environment itself is alterable: physical or operational parameters can be tuned to shape the transition dynamics and costs experienced by the agent. This motivates jointly optimizing both the policy and the environment design parameters. To this end, we establish an Environment Parameter Gradient Theorem -- a formal expression for the gradient of the value function with respect to environment parameters. The key theoretical device is a generalized action-value function Qπ,ξ(s,a,ζ)Q_{π,ξ}(s,a,ζ), which comprises two copies of the environment parameters: ζζ governs the cost and transition dynamics at the current state--action pair, while ξξ governs the future rollouts. This decoupling yields a tractable closed-form gradient expression and is essential to the theorem's derivation. Building on this result, we develop a model-free algorithm that simultaneously learns the optimal policy and the environment parameters. We demonstrate the efficacy of our framework on a UAV network design problem, where the optimal UAV placement (environment parameters) and communication routes (governed by the policy) are learned jointly to minimize the total communication cost in the network.

Towards Reliable Aerial Ground Vehicle Collaboration: An Integrated Planning and Autonomy Framework for Field Deployment

Limited flight endurance significantly restricts the operational range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in long duration missions such as surveillance and inspection, where multiple spatially distributed Areas of Interest (AOIs) must be visited. These tasks require efficient routing determining the sequence of visits which directly impacts mission time, energy consumption, and overall feasibility. Pairing UAVs with unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for mobile recharging offers a promising solution, but introduces a tightly coupled cooperative routing problem involving UAV route planning, UGV road constrained movement, energy management, and rendezvous scheduling under uncertainty. In this work, we present an integrated planning and autonomy framework for reliable field deployment. We formulate the problem as an energy constrained cooperative routing task and solve it using a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based planner that jointly optimizes the UAV visitation sequence and rendezvous locations with the UGV, outperforming baseline heuristics in minimizing total mission time. To bridge the gap between planning and execution, we introduce a standardized two layer YAML based mission API that captures environment states and structures lightweight, synchronized action sequences. This framework is supported by a complete autonomy stack using PX4/MAVSDK for UAV control and ROS 2/Nav2 for UGV navigation. Furthermore, we propose a lightweight Rendezvous Aware Replanner (RARP) that operates online to handle environmental uncertainties, reducing energy margin violations from 83.33% to 20.00%. The full system is validated through outdoor field experiments, demonstrating robust cooperative navigation and adaptability in dynamic tasks, including a search and rescue scenario with vision language model (VLM) based hazard detection

Autonomous UAV Route Planning for Coverage Maximization in Environmental Monitoring: A Systematic Literature Review

Environmental monitoring with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) requires route planning methods that maximize covered area while handling energy limits, operational constraints, and geometric complexity. This paper reports the protocol and preliminary results of an ongoing systematic literature review (SLR) on autonomous UAV route planning for coverage-oriented environmental monitoring. The review follows the PRISMA 2020 framework and searches Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between 2015 and 2026. The protocol focuses on path planning, coverage path planning, and informative path planning, with emphasis on algorithmic families, coverage and energy metrics, obstacle handling, geometric environment representations, and environmental constraints. At the current stage, 562 records have been identified, 161 duplicates have been removed, and 401 unique records have been screened by title, abstract, and keywords. From these, 247 studies were retained for full-text eligibility assessment (235 eligible and 12 borderline records to be resolved during full-text review). A preliminary analysis of the retained studies suggests strong concentration on coverage-oriented formulations, multi-UAV coordination, and energy-aware optimization, while fewer studies explicitly address weather, uncertainty, or obstacle-rich environments. Most retained studies rely on simulation-based validation, highlighting a potential simulation-to-reality gap, and recent publications show increasing interest in reinforcement learning, hybrid optimization, and geometry-aware planning. These early findings indicate an active but fragmented research landscape and support the need for a structured synthesis to identify mature techniques and unresolved gaps for realistic environmental monitoring missions.

Energy-Optimal Spatial Iterative Learning within a Virtual Tube

Due to the limited endurance of embedded energy sources such as lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries, the flight duration and operational range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are severely constrained. Although energy-efficient trajectory planning and control have been widely studied, most existing approaches rely on accurate system models and computationally expensive optimization procedures. This paper proposes a model-free online iterative learning (IL) framework to minimize energy consumption. Without requiring explicit models of UAV dynamics or energy consumption, the proposed method improves energy efficiency while maintaining a low computational cost. The per-iteration computational complexity is O(n), where n denotes the number of path points. In the tested cases, the proposed method is approximately 50--60 times faster than the model-based IPOPT benchmark. Simulation results and real-world flight experiments across multiple UAV platforms validate the effectiveness, computational efficiency, and practical applicability of the proposed approach.

MOAR Planner: Multi-Objective and Adaptive Risk-Aware Path Planning for Infrastructure Inspection with a UAV

The problem of autonomous navigation for UAV inspection remains challenging as it requires effectively navigating in close proximity to obstacles, while accounting for dynamic risk factors such as weather conditions, communication reliability, and battery autonomy. This paper introduces the MOAR path planner which addresses the complexities of evolving risks during missions. It offers real-time trajectory adaptation while concurrently optimizing safety, time, and energy. The planner employs a risk-aware cost function that integrates pre-computed cost maps, the new concepts of damage and insertion costs, and an adaptive speed planning framework. With that, the optimal path is searched in a graph using a discrete representation of the state and action spaces. The method is evaluated through simulations and real-world flight tests. The results show the capability to generate real-time trajectories spanning a broad range of evaluation metrics: around 90% of the range occupied by popular algorithms. The proposed framework contributes by enabling UAVs to navigate more autonomously and reliably in critical missions.

LNN-Fly: Continuous-Time UAV Navigation for Robust Obstacle Avoidance under Timing Mismatch

End-to-end unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigation can achieve impressive agility in simulation, yet its obstacle-avoidance behavior often degrades after deployment because the policy must tolerate simulator mismatch, sensing irregularity, and variable-rate control. These effects are especially dangerous in cluttered environments, where stale observations or short control irregularities can directly lead to collisions. We present LNN-Fly, a deployment-oriented continuous-time navigation policy for LiDAR-based UAV obstacle avoidance. The policy combines a dynamic-programming-inspired structured recurrent update, explicit conditioning on the elapsed control interval Δt, and an input-driven adaptive forgetting gate that refreshes stale latent state near hazards while preserving consistency during sustained maneuvers. It is trained with differentiable rollouts that incorporate deployment-relevant sensing and timing perturbations. In simulation, LNN-Fly improves obstacle-avoidance performance in the tested settings and shows better tolerance to reduced control frequency, sparse observations, and control-period jitter. It also transfers zero-shot from a simplified differentiable simulator to a physical quadrotor. In indoor cross-frequency real-world tests, the system achieves 100% success over 20 flights, while policy inference has a median latency of 0.514 ms on a desktop graphics processing unit (GPU) and about 2.5 ms on the onboard central processing unit (CPU), with onboard P95 latency below 30 ms.

RefGlass-GS: A UAV-Enabled Fusion Framework for Photorealistic, Semantic and Interactive Digitization of Reflective Glass Facades via Gaussian Splatting

Existing digitization of buildings with reflective glass facades suffers from geometric reconstruction distortion, unrealistic view-dependent texture rendering, and difficulties in object-based semantic enhancement. Therefore, we propose RefGlass-GS, a fusion framework that enables end-to-end UAV-based photorealistic, semantic, and interactive digitization of reflective glass facades. The contributions include: (1) proposing an individual glass panel segmentation method based on maximum a posteriori estimation with structural regularities, robust to severe reflection and background interference; (2) formulating a UAV viewpoint planning optimization function that maximizes the coverage of view-dependent appearance for sufficient data capture; (3) developing an optimized Gaussian Splatting framework with a Reflection MLP, a novel deferred shading function, and two enhanced regularization terms for effective modeling of high-frequency near-field reflections; (4) introducing a standardized data organization paradigm for structuring GS-based representations into object-based models, facilitating interactive facility management on digital twin platforms. Experiments on real-world reflective glass facade scenes validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method. Specifically, the glass panel segmentation achieves an improvement of 0.1927 in mIoU over SOTA methods, and only our method enables instance-level panel extraction. The UAV view planning improves novel view synthesis for reflective facades by 13.15 dB in PSNR compared to commercially used nap-of-the-object planning methods. The RefGlass-GS modeling outperforms SOTA Gaussian Splatting approaches for reflective scenes with an average improvement of 5.08 dB in PSNR.

CKM-Driven Communication-Aware UAV Intelligent Trajectory Optimization for Urban Inspection

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly employed in urban inspection tasks, where reliable communication is critical but challenging due to the severe spatial channel heterogeneity. To address the issue, in this paper, we focus on the communication-aware path planning for multi-UAV tasks, and propose a channel knowledge map (CKM)-driven trajectory planning framework which integrates the channel modeling and trajectory decision-making. Specifically, we apply the diffusion model to construct a time-accumulated CKM and achieve the accurate perception with low flight overhead, which leverages the sparse observation data to reconstruct the high-fidelity global channel quality distribution. Based on the CKM, we propose a global-to-local graph attention network soft actor-critic algorithm. The graph attention network optimizes the complex combinatorial node ordering problem, generating an optimal and communication-aware sequence for the inspection targets. Subsequently, the soft actor-critic algorithm performs continuous action control to ensure the smoothness of the flight path and dynamically avoid communication attenuation areas. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively guides UAVs through high-quality channel regions without dependence on real-time channel feedback, significantly improving both the trajectory efficiency and communication reliability.

Adaptive Machine Learning Framework for UAV Trajectory Optimization in O-RAN

The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) as open radio units (O-RUs) in 6G cellular systems presents a promising opportunity to achieve scalable and adaptive network coverage. However, optimizing UAV trajectories in dynamic and unfamiliar environments remains a critical challenge, particularly due to the need for extensive retraining in each new scenario. In this paper, we introduce a novel UAV trajectory optimization framework that integrates enhanced continual transfer learning within the O-RAN architecture. The proposed system maintains a library of pre-trained models and employs a model selection mechanism to identify and transfer knowledge from the most relevant environments, minimizing adaptation time and improving efficiency. When no sufficiently similar model is available, a fallback model empowered by continuous refinements ensures baseline performance. The framework leverages real-world city maps and ray tracing techniques to enhance learning reliability and improve trajectory planning. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model selection-based transfer learning approach reduces convergence time by 44% to 56% compared to retraining from scratch, and up to 40% compared to traditional transfer learning without model selection.

Integrated Exploration-Aware UAV Route Optimization and Path Planning

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used for exploration-driven monitoring in hazardous environments such as disaster zones, contaminated sites, wildfire areas, and damaged infrastructure, where limited flight endurance must be allocated between visiting reported locations and gathering new information. In these settings, prior information regarding hazards is often incomplete, spatially imprecise, and subject to change during execution. For example, initial reports may identify a region where a hazard is likely to exist, but the actual hazard may be displaced, partially observed, or entirely unreported. We present an integrated exploration-aware UAV route optimization and path planning framework for hazard monitoring under uncertain and evolving prior information. The environment is represented as a spatial risk map, where each location has an associated belief of hazardous conditions. Reported hazards are modeled as uncertain regions of interest (ROIs) rather than confirmed target locations, requiring the UAV to inspect reported areas while also using its limited flight endurance to explore informative regions. The proposed method solves a vehicle routing problem over reported ROIs, augments the route with auxiliary pseudo-nodes to improve spatial coverage, allocates the remaining flight distance budget across route segments, and optimizes dynamically feasible B-spline trajectories for local exploration. During execution, UAV measurements update a grid-based belief map, and the remaining trajectory is replanned when new information and the remaining budget justify adaptation. Across 48 scenario configurations, online replanning improves average KL reduction by 15.9% over the offline optimized planner and 48.6% over straight-line traversal.

Bridging the Sampling Distribution Shift in Radio Map Estimation: A Trajectory-Aware Paradigm

Learning-based radio map estimation (RME) plays a critical role in UAV-assisted wireless sensing, enabling tasks such as coverage prediction and network optimization. Most current methods assume an independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) training and testing setting based on random sampling. However, practical UAV measurements are collected sequentially along feasible trajectories, resulting in highly structured and spatially correlated patterns. This mismatch introduces a sampling distribution shift that increases the intrinsic difficulty of spatial field recovery and compromises the generalization of models trained under i.i.d. assumptions. To mitigate this issue, we propose a trajectory-aware training paradigm based on Stochastic-Triggered Trajectory-Based Sampling (ST-TBS), which preserves trajectory continuity while introducing sampling variability. Moreover, from a statistical perspective, we show that trajectory-based sampling reduces spatial diversity and increases information redundancy compared to random sampling. Extensive experiments on the RadioMapSeer and SpectrumNet datasets demonstrate that models trained with random sampling suffer significant performance degradation under trajectory-based observations, with RMSE increasing from 0.0391 to 0.2632 on SpectrumNet. Conversely, our proposed ST-TBS method effectively reduces the RMSE to 0.0571. These results highlight the necessity of aligning training and deployment sampling distributions for reliable RME.

CosFly-Track: A Large-Scale Multi-Modal Dataset for UAV Visual Tracking via Multi-Constraint Trajectory Optimization

Recent aerial vision-language navigation (VLN) datasets have grown rapidly, but they primarily address goal-oriented navigation to static destinations, leaving UAV visual tracking -- continuously following a moving target while maintaining visibility -- largely without dedicated training data. We introduce CosFlyTrack, a large-scale multi-modal dataset and scalable generation pipeline for UAV visual tracking in urban environments. The dataset provides approximately 12,000 expert and perturbed UAV trajectories generated from 6,000 pedestrian paths, comprising 2.4 million timesteps (approximately 334 hours) with seven aligned data channels: RGB, metric depth, semantic segmentation, six-degree-of-freedom drone pose, target state with visibility flag, bilingual (Chinese-English) instructions, and trajectory-pair metadata. To generate high-quality expert trajectories, we develop MuCO, a multi-constraint optimizer that plans directly in continuous three-dimensional space with BVH-accelerated collision and visibility queries, jointly enforcing target visibility, viewpoint quality, collision avoidance, smoothness, and kinematic feasibility, avoiding the discretization artifacts and post-hoc smoothing of grid-based planners. Fine-tuning experiments on seven vision-language models show that CosFlyTrack improves tracking performance to 78.3 to 95.6 percent SR@1 meter, a 53 to 69 percentage point gain over zero-shot baselines, supporting the dataset as a training resource for dynamic target-following agents. The dataset is publicly available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/AutelRobotics/CosFly; evaluation scripts and pre-trained checkpoints are hosted at https://huggingface.co/AutelRobotics/CosFly-Track.

Wind-Aware Optimal Trajectory Planning for Efficient Gliding of Fixed-Wing Aerial Systems

Gliding offers small fixed-wing UAVs extended endurance and silent operation but requires accurate energy management, especially under wind disturbances and obstacle constraints. Traditional Total Energy Control Systems based controllers regulate the trade between potential and kinetic energy reactively, often requiring fine-tuning and trim-conditions knowledge. In this work, we shift the regulation to the planning level and present a nonlinear, multi-cost trajectory planner for small UAV gliders. The method generates C3\mathcal{C}^3 continuous trajectories based on Bernstein polynomials, mapped into control commands through differential flatness, and re-planned online to match experimentally derived sink polar curves. A simulated netto variometer is integrated into the optimization to estimate air mass motion, constraining the glide to energy-balanced states. Consecutive gliding trajectories are linked by cruising segments computed through trajectories initialized on Dubins path-based waypoints, enabling hybrid missions that combine powered and unpowered flight. The approach is validated in CFD simulations and real-world experiments with a fixed-wing platform, showing reliable stabilization of sink rate, airspeed, and glide ratio under wind gusts and in presence of obstacles.

Safe Aerial 3D Path Planning for Autonomous UAVs using Magnetic Potential Fields

Safe autonomous Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) navigation in urban environments requires real-time path planning that avoids obstacles. MaxConvNet is a potential-field planner that leverages properties of Maxwell's equations to generate a path to the goal without local minima. We extend the 2D MaxConvNet magnetic field planner to 3D, using a convolutional autoencoder to predict obstacle-aware potential fields from LiDAR-derived 101^3 voxel grids. Evaluation across 100 randomized closed-loop trials in two distinct Cosys-AirSim urban environments, a dense night-time cityscape and a suburban district shows a 100% path planning success rate on both maps without retraining. In offline path planning, 3DMaxConvNet produces path lengths comparable to A* on unseen maps while reducing runtime from 0.155--0.17s to 0.087--0.089s, or about 1.7--1.95 times faster than A*. Against RRT*(3k), 3DMaxConvNet achieves similar path quality while reducing planning runtime from 17.2--17.5s to about 0.09s, which is roughly 193--201 times faster than RRT*(3k).

Dynamic-TD3: A Novel Algorithm for UAV Path Planning with Dynamic Obstacle Trajectory Prediction

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) finds extensive application in autonomous drone navigation within complex, high-risk environments. However, its practical deployment faces a safety-exploration dilemma: soft penalty mechanisms encourage risky trial-and-error, while most constraint-based methods suffer degraded performance under sensor noise and intent uncertainty. We propose Dynamic-TD3, a physically enhanced framework that enforces strict safety constraints while maintaining maneuverability by modeling navigation as a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP). This framework integrates an Adaptive Trajectory Relational Evolution Mechanism (ATREM) to capture long-range intentions and employs a Physically Aware Gated Kalman Filter (PAG-KF) to mitigate non-stationary observation noise. The resulting state representation drives a dual-criterion policy that balances mission efficiency against hard safety constraints via Lagrangian relaxation. In experiments with aggressive dynamic threats, this approach demonstrates superior collision avoidance performance, reduced energy consumption, and smoother flight trajectories.

EAAE: Energy-Aware Autonomous Exploration for UAVs in Unknown 3D Environments

Battery-powered multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can rapidly map unknown environments, but mission performance is often limited by energy rather than geometry alone. Standard exploration policies that optimise for coverage or time can therefore waste energy through manoeuvre-heavy trajectories. In this paper, we address energy-aware autonomous 3D exploration for multirotor UAVs in initially unknown environments. We propose Energy-Aware Autonomous Exploration (EAAE), a modular frontier-based framework that makes energy an explicit decision variable during frontier selection. EAAE clusters frontiers into view-consistent regions, plans dynamically feasible candidate trajectories to the most informative clusters, and predicts their execution energy using an offline power estimation loop. The next target is then selected by minimising predicted trajectory energy while preserving exploration progress through a dual-layer planning architecture for safe execution. We evaluate EAAE in a full exploration pipeline with a rotor-speed-based power model across simulated 3D environments of increasing complexity. Compared to representative distance-based and information gain-based frontier baselines, EAAE consistently reduces total energy consumption while maintaining competitive exploration time and comparable map quality, providing a practical drop-in energy-aware layer for frontier exploration.
